If you're a fan of the epic sword and sorcery fantasies, this one needs to join your list. The Blade Itself is whip-smart while retaining a sense of self-depravation. Full of rich characters, action scenes, and witty dialogue, this one checks all the boxes for fans.

With so many top thriller writers, this was sure to be a wonderful listen, and it is. I've never understood how so many brilliant writers can collaborate on a combo story like this, but it works. This is all the fun and thrills of a Karen Slaughter or Robert Dugoni read with some characters and details you wouldn't expect to find in one of their stories. It all adds up to an excellent read/listen for those of us who are thriller-dependent!

Lisa Jewell is branching out into the world of the supernatural with "Breaking the Dark." Featuring a special character, Jessica Jones, who has unique abilities, I see great promise for this storyline as it progresses. Fans of superheroes without the super egos, female protagonists, and supernatural thrillers will find something to latch onto here. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

Book two of the Derek Harrington series shows us that author T.R. Hendricks is honing his craft and refining his characters page by page. While both books in the series so far have been high-speed action with a likable hero, "The Infiltrator" has a tighter storyline than the series debut and the characters are showing rich personalities with well defined backgrounds.

If you're a fan of high octane action adventure with a spec-ops touch and a plot involving home-grown terrorists, check out this series and prepare to find a new series to love.

For fans of the Red Rising series, this story is a must-read. Heavily featuring Darrow (of course) and Lysander, fans will still find their favorites within these pages including Virginia, Lyria, Cassius, and Atlas. The world-building remains phenomenal, but it's the characters that really set this series apart. All of the major characters, both "good" and "bad," display their all-too-human traits. There are new heroes rising along with some horrific antagonists.

While many themes can be found, my major takeaway from this entire series has been the brutality of war and the pure humanity of our heroes. Darrow is a perfect hero for that, having made tough decisions and even poor decisions in the course of the uprising. He's done what he thought was necessary for the good of the many. But not everyone can understand or forgive those decisions.

If you enjoy epic fantasies with fantastic characters, space operas, or sci-fi tales that showcase how man can reach for the stars but still bring his frailties with him, do not miss the entire Red Rising series!

This is not a new story, but it's new to me. As a fan of Robert Dugoni's more recent works, I wanted to go back and take a look at some of his earlier tales. This one is unique, but it may not seem that way at first. David Sloane is a highly successful defense lawyer. He's also a man of unusual background and history. He's done amazing things in his past, but even he isn't aware of everything.

Sloane is a man haunted by strange and frightening dreams, seeming very much like a man with PTSD. As his nightmares and his waking reality begin to collide, the truth finally makes its way toward the surface.

I'm looking forward to more of the David Sloane series because he is a wonderfully complex human being.

What happens when a bunch of former spooks retire in a small town? The Martini Club, of course. They call themselves a book club, but it's more about eating, drinking, and reminiscing about the "good old days." But when trouble comes to peaceful Purity, Maine, these Silver Panthers can't help but get involved; much to the chagrin of the local (acting) Chief of Police.

Tess Gerritsen has a great mix of memorable characters, engaging plot, and hearty humor with book two of The Martini Club series, "The Summer Guests." These tales have a hearty and engaging homespun feel to them, and could be considered cozy mysteries, but they're really so much more. The plot twists like a mountain road as the accusations fly when a young visitor to the town goes missing. The investigation only brings out more questions as secrets are slowly unraveled.

This is great for fans of mysteries and suspense thrillers, cozy mysteries, and who-done-its. The characters have depth, and the plot is not only entertaining, it purely sizzles with the tension of a small town's secrets.

This gothic tale is a breath of fresh air for its differences. The author has not built upon supernatural tales of the past but has branched out with her own unique concept and created the gruesome Market of Monsters. This is the first book by Rebecca Schaeffer that I've read, but it definitely won't be the last. It's quick-witted with engaging characters who display genuine traits and flaws.

If you're a fan of supernatural thrillers and want to bring a different voice into your library, grab this book-- then prepare to be blown away over and over again.

The God of Second Chances

Allie and Joseph grew up together on a small island off Florida's west coast. They were inseparable as children and teens until the mail brought life-changing news one day. Joseph, known to his friends as Joe-Joe, went to Vietnam. Allie stayed on the island to run the family's famous restaurant.

Years later, nothing has worked out as anticipated. The restaurant is not only closed, it's fallen into disrepair. Allie is a broken woman, and a sudden widow. Joe-Joe is a recluse who believes it's best for society if he just lives in his rustic mountain cabin and stays away from the public. Including his brother, who he hasn't seen since before his 3rd or 4th deployment.

Charles Martin is a consummate storyteller, weaving genuinely engaging characters through a plot that unfolds with precision pacing. While this tale masquerades as a tragedy for most of the story line, it feels more like a thriller as we are given glimpses into the painful past that created this untenable present. But through this period of darkness, the light emerges, and as the truth comes out lives are changed, hope is restored, and the future offers opportunity. Who says there's no such thing as second chances?

"Send Down the Rain" is whip-smart, funny, emotional, and all-consuming. Themes of grace and mercy dominate as readers ride this roller-coaster that is part literary fiction, part suspense, part thriller, and part romance. If you've never experienced the brilliant writing of Charles Martin, "Send Down the Rain" is a great introduction.

Proving just why she's the top dog in this genre, Suzanne Collins takes readers back in time to the 10th Hunger Games. Boy, are they different than the ones we got to know in the original trilogy! This story offers fans great insight into the evolution of the games as well as a character or two we've seen in the previous books. Ms. Collins maintains her plot dynamics with tons of action and angst as we watch more tributes compete for their very lives. Even if you never read the original series you'll be able to keep up with this story. If you're already a fan, don't let this one pass you by!
