Historia
On January 20, 2021, standing where only two weeks earlier police officers had battled with right-wing paramilitaries, Joe Biden took his oath of office. The American people were still sick with COVID-19, his economists were already warning him of an imminent financial crisis, and his party, the Democrats, had the barest of majorities in the Senate. Yet, faced with an unprecedented set of crises, Joe Biden decided he would not play defense. Instead, he set out to transform the nation.

Mostly foreign policy based
Revisado: 09-13-23
I was hoping for more about the Inflation Reduction Act, the 2022 midterms, or the nomination of Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court. There’s a good amount in here about the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, that was interesting, but mostly it’s about failures in Afghanistan and successes in Ukraine. Those are interesting subjects, but I would be very interested in a book focused more on domestic achievements.

Historia
Teenage sisters Eve and Vera never imagined their summer vacation would be spent in the Arctic, tagging along on their mother’s scientific expedition. But there’s a lot about their lives lately that hasn’t been going as planned, and truth be told, their single mother might not be so happy either. Now in Siberia with a bunch of serious biologists, Eve and Vera are just bored enough to cause trouble. Fooling around in the permafrost, they accidentally discover a perfectly preserved, four-thousand-year-old baby mammoth, and things finally start to get interesting.

Good story, but not what I expected
Revisado: 05-24-23
I think I expected an optimistic climate change epic like Ministry of the Future. There are glimpses of hope here but the scope is kind of small and the trajectory of the mammoth story made me kind of sad. I also thought the mom and her oldest daughter were pretty insufferable in how self absorbed and negligent they were towards the youngest daughter. This is a story about grief, and grief can make people act strangely, but they both felt too old to be neglecting their youngest family member like that.

Historia
In 1929 Stalin launched his policy of agricultural collectivization - in effect a second Russian Revolution - which forced millions of peasants off their land and onto collective farms. The result was a catastrophic famine, the most lethal in European history. At least five million people died between 1931 and 1933 in the USSR. But instead of sending relief, the Soviet state made use of the catastrophe to rid itself of a political problem.

Important, but too visceral in some key moments
Revisado: 03-13-23
History is important to learn and to understand. In light of the current invasion of Ukraine by Russia it is good to go back and study the long history of contempt that Moscow elites have held for Ukrainian independence.
That being said I’m taking some points off because there were way too many graphic descriptions of murder and cannibalism. History isn’t dry or boring or strictly academic, I get it, but after ten minutes of anecdote after anecdote of families turning on each other for food I had to turn this off and go for a walk. For the most part the anecdotes complement statistics in this book, but if you’re an easily disturbed person like me, the limit is reached in the chapter describing starvation.

Historia
NoViolet Bulawayo’s bold new novel follows the fall of the Old Horse, the long-serving leader of a fictional country, and the drama that follows for a rumbustious nation of animals on the path to true liberation. Inspired by the unexpected fall by coup in November 2017 of Robert G. Mugabe, Zimbabwe’s president of nearly four decades, Glory shows a country's imploding, narrated by a chorus of animal voices that unveil the ruthlessness required to uphold the illusion of absolute power and the imagination and bulletproof optimism to overthrow it completely.

Intense story, great narrator
Revisado: 01-29-23
This story is mostly funny and snarky but at one certain points becomes very heartbreaking and intense. The end was great.

Historia
This is the authoritative, “deeply reported” (The Wall Street Journal) account of an eighteen-month crisis in American democracy that will be seared into the country’s political memory for decades to come. With stunning, in-the-room detail, New York Times reporters Jonathan Martin and Alexander Burns show how both our political parties confronted a series of national traumas, including the coronavirus pandemic, the January 6 attack on the Capitol, and the political brinksmanship of President Biden’s first year in the White House.

Interesting Book
Revisado: 05-12-22
Broken into three parts: the election, the January 6th riots, and the first year of the Biden administration (focused largely on the infrastructure bill)
Narrated by Kim's boss from Better Call Saul!

Historia
This is the way the world ends: with a nanosecond of computer error in a Defense Department laboratory and a million casual contacts that form the links in a chain letter of death. And here is the bleak new world of the day after: a world stripped of its institutions and emptied of 99 percent of its people. A world in which a handful of panicky survivors choose sides - or are chosen.

Classic good vs evil
Revisado: 05-25-20
I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed a novel this much. Stu Redman, Fran Goldsmith, Larry Underwood, Nick Andros, Randall Flagg, and so many other characters were so vivid and memorable. I loved the good characters and hated the evil ones.

Historia
At Cold Mountain Penitentiary, the convicted killers on E Block await their turn to walk the Green Mile and keep a date with the electric chair. Paul Edgecombe has seen his share of oddities in his years working as a guard on the Mile, but he's never met anyone like John Coffey.

Lovable and hatable characters
Revisado: 03-14-20
Good character development, the story is about some very good people and some very bad people. I think it could have done without the last chapter, which ends on a very cynical note. Even though the story deals with pretty heavy subject matter the undertones of that last chapter seem much darker than the rest of the book.
