Historia
Philip Carey, a sensitive orphan born with a clubfoot, finds himself in desperate need of passion and inspiration. He abandons his studies to travel, first to Heidelberg and then to Paris, where he nurses ambitions of becoming a great artist. Philip's youthful idealism erodes, however, as he comes face-to-face with his own mediocrity and lack of impact on the world. After returning to London to study medicine, he becomes wildly infatuated with Mildred, a vulgar, tawdry waitress, and begins a doomed love affair.

The Narrator Mumbles!
Revisado: 01-06-25
I will try another recording of this book. The narrator mumbles the ends of the sentences. There is no way to understand him unless the volume is turned up and even then half of the story is lost.

Historia
Rinehart's The Man in Lower Ten, the first American detective novel to make the best seller list, follows the investigation of the murder of a man in a sleeping car on a train. In this fast-paced thriller, the investigating detective builds up a network of clues that absolutely incriminate three entirely different people---only one of whom can be guilty.

Narrator Ruined The Book
Revisado: 05-29-24
I believe if the book had a male narrator, and one much better than Rebecca Burns who reads in an almost monotone voice, it would have been a much more interesting story. As it was, I left with almost two hours to the story and really didn't care who done it! I couldn't listen to Ms Burns any longer.
Additionally, if you don't follow every single word, you end up wondering what the heck happened and why the characters end up in a field or a deserted mansion. Strange book and I do like MRR.

It is an ordinary Thursday, and things should finally be returning to normal. Except trouble is never far away where the Thursday Murder Club are concerned. The Narrator Ruined It
Revisado: 10-20-23
I must return the book. I found myself talking over Fiona Hill’s Joyce demanding her to stop whispering! This is terrible. Well, do take everyone’s advice and buy the print version. Why they used Ms Hill again for the fourth book after such negative reviews is beyond me.

Historia
Being on the murder squad is nothing like Detective Antoinette Conway dreamed it would be. Her partner, Stephen Moran, is the only person who seems glad she's there. The rest of her working life is a stream of thankless cases, vicious pranks, and harassment. Antoinette is savagely tough, but she's getting close to the breaking point. Their new case looks like yet another by-the-numbers lovers' quarrel gone bad. Aislinn Murray is blond, pretty, groomed to a shine, and dead in her catalogue-perfect living room, next to a table set for a romantic dinner.

Great Story But Incredibly Bad Narrator
Revisado: 08-24-23
Who chose the gravelly, frog-in-her-throat Hilda Fay to read/narrate a Tana French book? Horrible! The accents, too! I’m not even halfway through this book and have to take breaks from listening to the narrator. Could she please clear her throat? My god. Breslin’s voice grates so much on my nerves that I could scream. Other than that … French writes so well that it keeps me listening. Maybe I’ll stop listening and purchase the Kindle version to finish it.

Historia
Among the most celebrated and beloved novels of 2021, Anthony Doerr’s gorgeous third novel is a triumph of imagination and compassion, a soaring story about children on the cusp of adulthood in worlds in peril, who find resilience, hope—and a book. In Cloud Cuckoo Land, Doerr has created a magnificent tapestry of times and places that reflects our vast interconnectedness—with other species, with each other, with those who lived before us, and with those who will be here after we’re gone.

So How Much Suffering Do You Want to Listen To?
Revisado: 06-17-23
You’ll know when you’ve had enough. My stopping point is the death of the bullocks. No, we cannot find imagined utopia, through religion, dreams, or wishing we had another lifehood. There’s no panacea, no free lunch, and certainly no end to man’s cruelty and ignorance. I don’t recommend listening to this. It’s depressing because it’s the world we live in. We need to try to change this world, right here, right now. Stop the pollution, stop the cruelty to animals, and take care of one another.

This ambitious, electrifying work traces the harrowing journey of the famed Sarajevo Haggadah, a beautifully illuminated Hebrew manuscript created in 15th-century Spain. When it falls to Hanna Heath, an Australian rare-book expert, to conserve this priceless work, the series of tiny artifacts she discovers in its ancient binding—an insect wing fragment, wine stains, salt crystals, a white hair—only begin to unlock its deep mysteries.

Ended Early - Narration & Accents Were Too Much
Revisado: 05-02-23
This would have been a great listen but for the annoying accents. It just go to be too much and at five hours left in the book, I had to give up. This is a shame because the story is excellent like all of Brooks’ historical novels.

I Tried
Revisado: 11-26-22
If this story were made into a TV Mini-series, no one would watch it past the snipe-hunting scene. Inexorable boredom!
I’ve tried to read this novel, and now listen to it, at least three times, but never can get to the end. We know the end. Do we have to entertain the ridiculous lives of the privileged wealthy to understand basic human ethics and morals?
Again, I tried. And who am I to judge these people living in a life so far away and in the past? Life is short. Love is elusive. Dreams don’t come true. I think Tolstoy realized that people wear their karma on their heads!
