An excellent book on FIRE
Revisado: 01-20-23
I have listened to a few books on financial independence. I think Dave does a great job of putting forward the arguments for saving and investing money. Even my husband listened to it. And it is practical too.
Although I preferred "Quit Like A Millionaire" for the investment advice and she talked more about diversifying your investments, I liked that this book also covered it from an Australian perspective. And Dave also has more of a view to the environmental impact our decisions are having on the world - which was great.
Everyone will have their own flavour of FIRE, so I think all of these books add to the richness of the topic.

This book has lots of useful tips
Revisado: 01-20-23
Although I don't have the same religious views as the author, I still found this book very useful and I think it will have an impact on my life. It was very practical and full of good advice. I have listened to a number of books on financial independence lately and that all have all have their own flavor. Although this one didn't go into investing, it does have lots of good ideas about how to save money and the philosophy behind that.

This book was wonderful - it made me laugh and cry
Revisado: 01-20-23
For some reason - probably because it was so well written - it touched me in so many ways and i didn't want it to end. I found myself laughing or at least smiling a lot. And there were other times especially towards the end where I found myself crying. I think Beth touched on a lot of topics we all feel the impact of.

Best Investment Book I Have Ever Read
Revisado: 01-08-23
I loved this book on so many levels. And it is definitely changing my life. I love hearing their stories about how they came to realize that they could actually retire early. And how they are enjoying their lives as a result. I like how specific the investment advice is down to which investment ticker to invest in and why. It just make sense to me. And I have read lots of investment books. I just wish my husband had also listened to the whole book.

Historia
Thinking all monasteries were like the ones he saw in the movies, Jesse Itzler arrived at the New Skete religious community in remote Cambridge, New York, with a shaved head and a suitcase filled with bananas. To his surprise, New Skete monks have most of their hair. They're Russian Orthodox, not Buddhist, and they're also world-renowned dog breeders and authors of dog-training books that have sold in the millions.

Excellent Insights and Great Storytelling
Revisado: 02-03-20
Jesse is a great storyteller. I loved hearing how the monks (and the nuns) earn a living and support themselves.
I loved how Jesse equated the disciplining of the dogs with how we need to discipline ourselves to not let the modern age distract us so we can't focus and achieve our real purpose in life.
But Jesse needs to get his Transcendental Meditation (TM) checked because when he said he "tried to meditate" I cringed. This method is effortless, so you just introduce the mantra and let it do its work. You don't fight to dispel thoughts. You just return to the mantra when you remember to do so (because it is attractive to the mind to do so).
I agree with him that is often easier to meditate with a group than it is to do it alone.
But overall it was a great book and I didn't want it to end.

Interesting personal stories from business owners
Revisado: 12-01-19
This book gave me a lot of food for thought about different ways to approach running a business. I will try and apply some of these ideas to my own business.
I always love hearing real people's stories and about how they stumbled into their businesses etc. It is so much better than a lot of business books that only give you examples from the big corporations.
I also liked hearing the real voices of many of the business owners. And the narrator's voice is very soothing and I liked the way it alternated from the actual person to the narrator.

Revisado: 08-23-19
Gail Honeyman writes this in such a way that it becomes a mystery that draws you in. Her observations about how we all behave and relate to one another is spot on. I loved this book and was sad when it drew to a close.

Shrill is an uproarious memoir, a feminist rallying cry in a world that thinks gender politics are tedious and that women, especially feminists, can't be funny. Coming of age in a culture that demands women be as small, quiet, and compliant as possible - like a porcelain dove that will also have sex with you - writer and humorist Lindy West quickly discovered that she was anything but. With inimitable good humor, vulnerability, and boundless charm, Lindy boldly shares how to survive in a world where not all stories are created equal.

Historia
When she was suddenly given the opportunity of a new life in rural Jutland, journalist and archetypal Londoner Helen Russell discovered a startling statistic: the happiest place on earth isn't Disneyland but Denmark, a land often thought of by foreigners as consisting entirely of long, dark winters, cured herring, Lego and pastries. What is the secret to their success? Are happy Danes born or made?

I loved Helen's insights and her honesty
Revisado: 01-28-18
Helen made this no only informative, but also very personal and interesting. As I am living outside my home country, I could relate to her feelings. Although I should mention that she mainly asked people who were working whether they were happy. She didn't ask unemployed youth but she did cover some of the not so great things about this and any country.
