Polygamy? Homosexuality? Why?

The plot of this book is not very exciting. There was potential for some good things to happen but nothing remarkable ever developed.

I love the Starships Mage Universe. The magic, simulacrum chamber, space travel, government themes are rich. Those ideas give this universe the potential to compete with the big stars in the space race, Star Wars and Star Trek.
One problem is that the writer is limited by political interests. Glynn Stewart never fails to sprinkle in homosexuality, and in this book he adds polygamy. Neither of these adds anything to the story. The attempt is to make it seem natural by casually making a character here or there homosexual but nothing is gained by these additions. It disrupts the flow of the book if anything.

Caution: Author has Harsh Biases

Right from “Level One” the author expresses very harsh anti-God biases and pushes the Democrat/Liberal politics hard.
I’m neither Democrat nor Republican so I prefer to avoid the political rhetoric as much as possible. It’s bad enough that you can’t even watch ESPN anymore because they’re more politics than sports now, so reading sci-fi or fantasy is usually a good break from all the garbage usually. Not so in this book.
The author makes the typical anti-God statements: “we may God up”, “there is no proof”, “science has proven that we all evolved from a single-celled organism” and all the other ‘rinse and repeat’ statements that people make if they’ve never done any actual research to figure out what is true.
Ironically this author is less like his main character than a Christian is. The author recognizes the “human condition” that Christians call sin and in the same chapter tries to affirm a theory that contradicts the “human condition” which is single-celled evolution.

The main character in this story claims to have broken away from the tradition and did his own research to discover “truth.” This is something I can personally say but the author clearly hasn’t. Public schools and universities indoctrinate kids with theories such as evolution and teach them as fact. Evolution is a fact, in the sense that we are not exact replicas from our parents but there is no evidence, none at all, that proves or even supports the idea that we evolved from one single-called organism.
The idea that something came from nothing as the Big Bang theory suggests is absurd and if you believe that I would encourage you to really consider the logic of that claim.
If you really want to know the truth check out Lee Strobel’s attempt to disprove the resurrection of Jesus Christ in the Case for Christ

This book isn’t easy to review because it is clearly setting up for a new direction. This book feels like the pilot episode of a new tv series.
That being said, this book is really good. I’ve read every book in the Starships Mage universe and I’m a huge fan. This book has some brilliant moments but I will avoid spoilers. Let’s just say, the antagonist is dead set on vindication and it is a really cool idea.

This has been such a fun trilogy! The opening to this book is captivating and the entire book feels like Damian Montgomery is facing impossible odds. Hearing these words is so satisfying: "I speak for Mars; will you listen?!"

This book has all the fundamentals of a Christian. I'm currently a theological major at a university and we were assigned this book. Although I've been a Christian for many years I still think this book is great for reminding us of the daily 'disciplines'

This is an action-packed space opera with magic. The magic system is very fun and interesting. It isn't anything out of the ordinary for the most part but it makes for a fun universe. The main character is the kind of character you would want leading you.

This story was very well written, leaving you wanting more and the narrator performs the characters very well. The battle computer's voice sounds like Stu from Family Guy

the narrator might be the biggest problem. he speaks slowly and sounds like a high school teenager moping around while mom is asking him questions about his day

As a fan of Warcraft lore this book was fantastic. Writing for Blizzard, especially in Warcraft lore is a challenge so I'll give William King credit there. Warcraft lore doesn't leave too much room for a writer to take the story into fun, surprising directions. I've met William King and I was hopeful for this book. I think he did a great job making Illidan seem more like the "betrayed" than the "betrayer" and that is vital to the lore moving into the new expansion, Legion. The nostalgia was there. I think there were moments in the book where opportunities for greatness were within grasp but King didn't seize it. Keeping the questions alive regarding Illidan's intentions was fantastic. There was always a back and forth about a few trust issues and that made the book interesting.
