It's all about the cabinet

Total
3 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 04-29-09

This was a good read but really focused on Roosevelt's cabinet, not Roosevelt, himself. The author spent too much time on Perkins. Toward the end of the book, the author gets involved in a little Bush and Republican bashing which really is unecessary in what is supposed to be a historical account, not a political memoir.

Amateur work

The characters are not believable. Story lines get started and never get finished. The narrator does an aweful job with the voices. Other than that, how was the play Mrs. Lincoln?

It's still a science book

Total
4 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 11-05-06

This was a very enjoyable book but that's because I enjoy learning about science. Make no mistake about this book - it's still a science book and you have to be ready for it. Some of the reviews made it seem like it was more "trivial" info. It's definitely heavy on the science.

Truth is better than fiction

I loved this story. Each time I found myself thinking, "This is too farfetched," I remembered that it's actually a true story! The reader is great and even the music, which I usually find distracting, is very professional and adds to the feel of the story.

Poor Title

Total
2 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 06-19-06

The book's title really only describes the first half of the book.

The first half of this book is interesing and right on point. It is the story behind the Pilgrims, their voyage and what drove them to take the risks they did. I was very pleased until, about half way through, the book turned into a drawn-out, detailed account of the wars with the Native-Americans that came several decades after the Pilgrims arrival. While the wars with the Native-Americans may be interesting to some, it was not the reason I bought this book and the accounts of the battles bored me.

If you're buying this because you want to hear the story of the Pilgrims, you'll be happy for the first half of the book. Unless you're really interested in the details of the Native-American wars and are ready to keep track of all the tribes and leaders, the second half will bore you greatly.

Women are smarter than this

Total

This book is such a dis-service to women. In real life, women aren't this naive and dim-witted. This book was frustrating and slow. I felt like jumping through my iPod and telling Ridley to "wake up"!

Great story. Ends weak.

Revisado: 01-17-06

What a terrific story. The story was so captivating that I kept forgetting this was a true story. If you have any interest in architecture, landscape, pop culture, history, or crime, this book will grab you and you won't want to hit the stop button.

My only complaint is that the ending seemed forced and didn't quite fit with the flow of the rest of the book.
