Historia
Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells - taken without her knowledge - became one of the most important tools in medicine: The first “immortal” human cells grown in culture, which are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than 60 years. HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine; uncovered secrets of cancer, viruses, and the atom bomb’s effects.

Amazing!
Revisado: 01-05-23
I was in New York City when this book first came out. I saw it in a window of a bookstore as my husband and I were going out for breakfast. I thought to myself I'd really like to read that book. Years went by and I never did read the book until 2022.
The story of Henrietta Lacks, her cells, and her family were fascinating, sad, and triumphant. Each entity was a complete story unto itself.
Here we see a poor black family and how they were treated. This is a clear picture of how poverty and color
resulted in the family's terrible struggle for the recognition of their mother.
There are a lot of medical facts that they author has laid out in a very understandable way. It certainly leads to a rethinking of all that surrounds us.
Henrietta's daughter Debra's struggles become the reader's struggles. Henrietta's entire family was affected by Henrietta cells... as I am sure they will affect the reader.
This book is a good read for anyone. It is so telling of human nature. Instead of just seeing the name Henrietta Lacks, we see a web of intricacies that are woven, forming not just the life of a single person, but of a family and of all the world who has benefited from what Henrietta Lacks on unknowingly gave to the world. God bless this family!

Historia
Is it a gesture of goodwill or a sinister trap that lures Rupert St. Vincent and his family to a magnificent estate? How desperate is Joyce Lambert, a destitute young widow whose only recourse is to marry a man she despises? What unexpected circumstance stirs old loyalties in Theodora Darrell, an unfaithful wife about to run away with her lover?
In this collection of short stories, the answers are as unexpected as they are satisfying. The Queen of Mystery takes bizarre romantic entanglements, supernatural visitations, and classic murder to inventive new heights.

Historia
The intensely personal David Copperfield (widely regarded to be the most autobiographical of the author’s novels) is one of Dickens’ greatest works. We follow David Copperfield from birth and miserable childhood to inevitable tragedies, until he finally finds happiness later in life. Full of some of the most memorable characters in literary history. Nicholas Boulton’s depiction of the oily Uriah Heep and David Copperfield’s sinister stepfather, Murdstone, do the novel full justice.

Really wonderful!
Revisado: 02-08-22
I only have distant memory of D. Copperfield, and a couple seriously abridged movies. I was absolutely delighted to listen to the entire story. David Copperfield is no longer fragmented in my mind. It was definitely worth the time if you've never read it or if you only have some remembrances of it when they still taught English literature in high school. If you are new to David Copperfield, or want to do an old classic justice, do yourself a favor and listen to this particular version. The narrator is worthy of a Charles Dickens story!

What can a son say upon discovering that his father wore a Nazi uniform? Reporter Alexander Münninghoff was only four when he found this mortifying relic from his father's recent past in his attic. This shameful memento came to symbolize not only his father's tragically misguided allegiance but also a shattered marriage and ultimately the unconscionable separation of a mother and son.

Very Interesting
Revisado: 09-09-21
I enjoyed the story/memoir. I found it interesting because it dealt with a different type of life then the life I was familiar with during and after World War II. History, geography, and real lives...Never perfect and often dysfunctional.
At first I wasn't sure how the story was going to be woven, and I had considered not finishing it based on a friend's not finishing it because she didn't think she would like it.
'The Son and Heir' sat in my library until I could clear out I didn't want. I came across this book again, and decided to try it again. I am very happy I completed this story. It was deeply interesting and it was very easy to listen to because the narrator was wonderful. The narrator invites us into this family history... it was a great memoir right to the end!

Historia
There's a damsel in distress and accusations of attempted murder flying around, but it's not in the comfortable confines of the English countryside; it's in the very distant city of Damascus. Lennox must go and investigate, although he's not too keen on exotic locations, and his old retainer Greggs is distinctly averse to the very idea. Nevertheless, ex-Chief Inspector Swift persuades them, and they reach the ancient city to discover a movie crew, a spy, and a couple of mysterious ladies.

Revisado: 07-15-21
This was, as the charming Heathcliff mysteries are, an enjoyable read. I recommend to anyone wanting a vintage story with mystery, and who like figuring out who the perpetrator is well putting all the pieces together. This was woven very nicely and I didn't figure it out.

Most Excellent!
Revisado: 03-11-21
This was, by far, one of the very best thriller mysteries I have read in a very, very long, long time. The characters are all well developed, the historical background adds so many levels to the intrigue and the myth knowledge was layered in cultural context.
The narrator is also most excellent. His voice allows you to hear each character's individual voice. When you hear him give voice to a character, you forget you are listening to a narrator. The character is speaking for her or himself and as the reader/listener, you are an active observer at all times.
If you are looking for a mystery thriller that keeps you totally intrigued at every level, and for every moment, do not miss the opportunity to read this novel. It is thriller, mystery, myth and reality.

I saw the movie and enjoyed it immensely. However, the book was ever so much more entertaining and... we will never know what that nasty thing was in the shed or what happened to the goat.
Definitely worth the read. Cold Comfort Farm was just delightful through and through.
