This was a remarkably informative and entertaining story, all the more for being history and not fiction. Superbly written and presented, the pace never flagged and I hated to see it end.

Although I am a Ken Follett fan I did not enjoy this book. It was tedious and boring, with an unimaginative plot padded by a lot of gratuitous sex irrelevant to the plot. The narrator was not able to carry off the characters’ accents and could not sustain my interest. I honestly had to force myself to finish it.

Waugh was a consummate craftsman, and the combination of his gorgeous prose and Jeremy Irons’ performance gave it an elegiac majesty that absorbed me completely. By chance I came to the end of the book at the middle of Holy Week and I could not have asked for a better pairing. Like many others I could have done without the musical background, which I found distracting.

I love the way Martin Walker has intertwined three stories, one an intricately plotted murder mystery, the second an appealing depiction of life in “rural “ France, and the third highlighting his obvious love of good food and wine.

MacKenzie’s performance is likewise excellent, his only very minor “flaw” being a slight inability to get the American accent exactly right by over emphasizing his r’s and pronouncing “been” as “bean,” rather than “ben” or “bin.” This, however, in no way distracts from his ability to make the text come alive. I am a total fan of the Walker-MacKenzie team and am looking forward with relish to my next Bruno read.
