We’re all born with a certain “imprint” for work that makes us come alive. This is your "Sparketype®," your DNA-level driver of work that lets you know, deep down, you’re doing what you’re here to do. Work that motivates you, fills you with purpose and, fully-expressed in a healthy way, becomes a main-line to meaning, flow, performance, and joy. Put another way, work that “sparks” you.

Disappointed
Revisado: 11-12-21
I was really expecting to love this book. While taking the test I started to become skeptical but just tried to be genuine with my answers.
Result came back as essentialist. Looking at the basic description of this type I thought, ok, that makes sense. I do like to distill things down to get to the simple underlying concepts or patterns. Sure. But then when I listened to the essentialist section and heard the examples, it was complete garbage. According to that, the essentialist is the anal retentive obsessively detailed note taking type A bossy control freak? Huh? It didn’t really even seem to support the definition of the Sparketype. In fact, it seemed like it was describing people who were the opposite of essentialist. I can imagine having to weed through the excessive notes, etc created by the profiled person to actually get to what was essential. I know these types of people. So then I listen to the other types and find that I could just as easily identify with Scientist or Maeven. Completely lost respect for the whole thing. I really can’t imagine how this would be life changes for thousands of people.
I don’t think the questions answered in the test actually correspond very well to the supposed results. I keep plenty of books that at least provide some value or insight even if I was a big fan overall. Returning this one.

Historia
Humanity lurches into an uncertain future, dismissive of warning signs. Only the most naïve believe humanity will step back from the brink. Yet in a place that doesn’t exist, a riddle, a puzzle, hope, fear, danger, salvation - all come together. Zach Marjek has faced death in the far corners of the Earth and survived where others have failed. Now, he's thrust into an unimaginable situation where mercenaries, an Inuit wanderer, a murderous Yupik, a young mother, a video game designer, a retired general, a president, a Chinese marine, and mathematics prodigies must come together.

Once I got through the beginning…
Revisado: 08-11-21
At first I hated this because it felt like so many other modern military based “you have no choice but to join this project” team gathering full of hard ass captains and sergeants and military rebel rule breakers who are secretly wonderful, caring people and actually superior to everyone else…sprinkle in scientists and experts and on and on…at first I actually gave up on it.
But…when I came back and suffered through the setup, it turned out to be worth it. Love how it probably ties into the Anyar books too.
I will continue to listen to anything Thorensen puts out. You should get this one if you’re a fan. Just know you have to make it through quite a few chapters before getting invested (if you’re like me).

Historia
Joseph Colsco, Mark Caldwell, and Heather Chen. Cast away by aliens onto a planet inhabited by humans, transplanted there by a second alien race thousands of years in the past, and for reasons unknown. Each of the three found themselves left naked on beaches scattered across the planet Anyar. Each struggled to survive as strangers amidst humans with technology centuries behind Earth’s. Each lived through years of adjustments, trials, dangers, and new lives beyond anything they could have imagined - or feared.

Easily my least favorite in the series so far but I don’t regret listening and looking forward to the next.
If you are a fan of the series and made it this far… you know you’re gonna get this one too so why are you bothering with reviews :)

We are stuck, stymied, frustrated. But it needn't be this way. There is a formula for success that's been followed by the icons of history - from John D. Rockefeller to Amelia Earhart to Ulysses S. Grant to Steve Jobs - a formula that let them turn obstacles into opportunities. Faced with impossible situations, they found the astounding triumphs we all seek.

Eh... confused by the hype on this one
Revisado: 02-26-20
I wanted to (and expected to) to like this book but found myself rolling my eyes more and more as I got through each chapter.
I was hoping for more creative insight into how to use obstacles as the catalyst for solutions and, better yet, real life applications. Instead it feels like just another book about turning problems into opportunities and is riddled with already overused historical anecdotes that supposedly prove a point.
Beyond that a lot of the book is basically a message of perseverance. Keep trying! Find a better way! Never give up! General Grant didn't and look what he accomplished! Imagine if he had just quit! The thing is. stories about folks who persevered and ultimately succeeded are likely to stick and get passed on - but you don't tend to hear about all those who also never gave up but wasted time fighting a losing battle (or the wrong battle) never to achieve their desired outcome. If my goal is to get down the street and there is a boulder in the way so I go around it.... was the obstacle the way - or was it just an obstacle? Everybody knows what an obstacle is and everybody knows you have to overcome them. Nothing new here.
And all that makes me a little disgruntled about the title. I didn't hear much that could even start to convince me that the obstacle is "the way". Instead, what I heard was reinforcement of what everyone already thinks... the WAY is the way and the obstacle is IN the way. Sure, sometimes having a positive attitude about and dealing with an obstacle can lead to creative solutions or even turn a weakness into a strength... but, to me at least, that's different and the content does not live up to the title or the hype.
Glad others seem to be getting more out of this but I think I will return this one.

Nobody knew where it came from. Nobody knew why it came. When an eight-foot-tall man made of stone appears in the middle of a busy city center one July afternoon, two-bit (and antisocial) reporter Andy Pointer assumes it's just a publicity stunt. Indeed, so does everyone else...until the Stone Man begins to walk, heading silently through the wall of the nearest building, flattening it, and killing several people inside as a result.

Great, Get it,
Revisado: 01-18-20
I will definitely be recommending this to my friends who listen to audio books. I'm not sure if calling it a "horror" novel was the best decision. I get why and maybe it helps the story stand out on the "shelves" but I'm thinking of some other science fiction with an arguably comparable level of horror like "Reset", "Permafrost", "Level Five", "The Fold", "Fear the Sky", etc.
Anyway, my point is, I put off listening to this for a while because of the "horror" thing but recommend that science fiction listeners looking for a super unique, engaging, and satisfying story who might hesitate for the same reason... don't. This is one of the good ones.

Revisado: 11-07-19
If you're considering getting this book, it's probably because you already listened to and liked the first book. You will like this one too. New story line including a view of the evolution of Pax culture from an outside perspective,
I liked it at least as much as the first book... probably more because you get to dive right into the familiar world that has already been established in book one.
Nice job again, Sue! I enjoyed spending another 12 hours in the world you have created.
Covers are cool too. I hope the book 3 cover uses some rainbow bamboo.

"Real" Intelligence in an AI Setting
Revisado: 09-30-19
I'm only toward the end of Book 2 and, even if books 3 - 6 suck (which seems unlikely), well worth the credit.
I found this to be a fresh Post Apocalypse SciFi setting and story perspective. Especially like the step back at the end of book 1 that expands the context.
I'm tired today because I keep resetting the 15 minute sleep timer endlessly every night wanting to hear more. That's what you want in an audio book, right?

If you're looking at book V reviews you already know what you're in for based on 1-4. Just a great, cleanly written, action packed story that is so easy to listen to you almost feel guilty.

If you liked the first book... buy now
Revisado: 09-23-19
Definitely a solid continuation. NOT one of those "loved the first book but... what happened?" situations. I might even be able to convince myself that this one was actually a little bit better than the first. The character growth was a bit "young adult" but, hey, you already listened to the first book so you know what I mean.
Just get it. If you're reading this you probably want to anyway.

Solid. If you are intrigued at all - go for it.
Revisado: 09-23-19
Four stars because it's not something I would necessarily recommend to a friend to read like I would a lot of other books... but still good (I immediately listened to book 2 as well).
I may have been expecting it (and maybe unfairly) to be more science fiction but it's actually more fantasy / magic set in a "realistic" context (aside from the whole apocalypse thing). The Native American angle definitely made it work though. Kind of an American Gods approach to Native American mysticism. Also has kind of a Young Adult feel to it but, hey, so did Hunger Games and I liked that :)
Again... 4 stars intended to mean really good...no regrets... but just not something I would go out of my way to rave about as I would 5 stars. Probably just me.
