Historia
In the summer of 1913, the wooden-hulled brigantine Karluk departed Canada for the Arctic Ocean. At the helm was Captain Bob Bartlett, considered the world’s greatest living ice navigator. The expedition’s visionary leader was a flamboyant impresario named Vilhjalmur Stefansson hungry for fame. Just six weeks after the Karluk departed, giant ice floes closed in around her. As the ship became icebound, Stefansson disembarked with five companions and struck out on what he claimed was a 10-day caribou hunting trip. Most on board would never see him again.

Historia
World War II tail gunner Gene Moran fell four miles through the sky without a parachute and lived. Captured by the Germans, he survived a harrowing eighteen months as a prisoner of war, including a six-hundred-mile death march in 1945 across Central Europe. When Gene returned home, he kept those memories locked up for nearly seventy years. His nine children knew little of their dad's war story. But when John, a young history teacher, learns of Gene's amazing fall, he's desperate to learn more. Finally, Gene agrees.

An incredible story, well told
Revisado: 12-07-24
First the story. Inspiring and astonishing as many have said. The writing is strong and even the interwoven stories of the writer and the main character Eugene Moran are handled well. I found the writer relatable and he handled the subject matter with sensitivity. Then the narrator; the positives are that he has good intonation and conveys emotions well. He has a pleasant voice and can moderate it all for different characters. Unfortunately, as many have said he really needs to work on his pronunciation and elocution. All sorts of words get mangled and it is puzzling given he is so accomplished in the other areas. One could understand exotic place names being mispronounced, but even a word like “plagued” becomes something that sounds like “plugged”. He seems to be a good voiceover artist so with some attention to this he could be more polished.

Historia
General Chuck Yeager was the greatest test pilot of them all - the first man to fly faster than the speed of sound...the World War II flying ace who shot down a Messerschmitt jet with a prop-driven P-51 Mustang...the hero who defined a certain quality that all hotshot fly-boys of the postwar era aimed to achieve: the right stuff. Now he tells his whole incredible life story with the same “wide-open, full throttle” approach that has marked his astonishing career.

Outstanding…our world needs a spine
Revisado: 02-18-23
Listening to Chuck’s story I couldn’t help lamenting what a pathetic generation I live in. People like Chuck and his contemporaries - men and women alike - endured so much hardship and still found it in themselves to have a ball, and here we are in the most spoilt and Molly coddled living environment ever and people are at outraged and at each other’s throats for the most trivial and absurd reasons. Frankly, people are bored. What an exciting life Yeager lived and I found he was human and modest enough to admit that he had a whole lot of good fortune to go with his incredible pilot expertise. A fantastic way to spend a few hours…thank you!

Brilliant narration and fabulous anecdotes
Revisado: 07-29-21
Having listened to a lot of audio books I have suffered through some good content badly narrated. This is not one of those, the narrator does an exceptional job in my opinion, his pronunciation of non English names is outstanding, his cadence and intonation really do the text justice.
As to the text, it is substantial, and very well structured. I didn’t always appreciate the obvious obsession with evolutionary principles, almost to a doctrinal level, it seemed a bit over the top - almost like a fundamentalist preacher about evolution and atheism. However I think the author handles the subject of mastery very adeptly, and for anyone intent on mastering their craft, this is well worth a listen. For the richness of the biographical accounts alone, it is time very well spent.

Odd narration practice
Revisado: 05-17-21
I am enjoying the content of this book and it seems to be valuable and on point. However the narrator’s practice of altering her voice to sound deeper and gruffer when quoting men is really distracting. Imagine if a male narrator put on a higher pitched voice to indicate he was quoting a woman…he’d be labelled sexist! It detracts from the quotes themselves.
