Oh my word. This was a book club pick and a dud. I could not follow the story. At all. Nothing was absorbing. So many names. So many boring things happening. The narrator was monotone and made me sleepy. I was worried it was just me and I was being too hard on the book, but no. Everyone who listened agreed this was not worth the read.

Love the narrator, the story…meh

Sarah Naughton is one of my favorite narrators, and she did a fantastic job on this book! The story though, I don’t know. It was good, but it was really missing something. There was so much worry and drama and emotions leading up to…not much of anything. I mean, it was really all for nothing, and we don’t know what happens with Beta. Good idea for the story, but I feel like there were ways to make it better.

Maybe I’m alone in this, but I was confused by some of the book. I felt like I walked into a movie half way through after explanations had been made already and I was trying to catch up and make the connections. The narrator was fantastic, but every so often the sound would change and the narrator would sound far away and flat. It was weird. Not the narrators fault but something in how it was recorded. I started the book knowing it was part of a trilogy, but the book seemed like it needed the trilogy because the author didn’t even try to fit everything into one book. Then the ending was sloppily patched together and I’m not sure I really understand what happened. Normally I’m good with these kinds of books, so my confusion with this one is really throwing me off. Luckily it was free to read/listen to.

Maybe this would’ve been better as a read than a listen. The narrator does a good job of separating her voice from the character voices, but her voice is annoying, the women characters are all high pitches and whiney sounding, and all the male characters sound like and out of breath ancient Chinese man with an English accent. The narration did ruin some of the story for me, so it’s hard to tell if I had liked it if I had read it. The main characters are terrible at communicating and quick to anger. I rolled my eyes. A lot. The sex scenes use words like member and seed (which I’m sure is appropriate for the time or more appropriate). I use to love Julie Garwood, so I’m not sure if this one is just a miss for me or if I outgrown her works.

Cute!

This book was a great follow up to the first one. We all enjoyed it! Couldn’t help but notice a certain neighbor sounded like a certain celebrity turned president. It sure added to the humor of the book for me (not that my boys picked up on that). The narrator did a great job and we will definitely be listening to the rest of the series!

Cheeeeeeeeeesy

Whoa boy was this cheesy. The beginning of the book got me thinking this was going to be a huge dud. The storyline was lame and the female narrator was flat. When the male narrator was introduced it got a little better. I’m a sucker for love stories, so I finished it and it was kind of cute, but I’m very glad I didn’t pay for this.

I don’t need to read anymore

I know I’m a bit older than the target audience, but I usually enjoy books like this. Not this one. Maybe it was the narrator. She did a fabulous job making a 12 year old girl sound as annoying as possible. I can’t tell if it’s written that way since I got this book free on audible. Either way, this doesn’t make me want to read more.
