Historia
Survival for Ki Lim and Sang Ly is a daily battle at Stung Mean Chey, the largest municipal waste dump in all of Cambodia. They make their living scavenging recyclables from the trash. Life would be hard enough without the worry for their chronically ill child, Nisay, and the added expense of medicines that are not working. Just when things seem worst, Sang Ly learns a secret about the ill-tempered rent collector who comes demanding money - a secret that sets in motion a tide that will change the life of everyone it sweeps past.

even a quarter ounce of sappiness. I almost quit while reading the 1st chapter...so grim. But I'm thankful I read on. if you do, too, you will learn a lot, perhaps decide to do further reading on the history and politics of Cambodia, or even read Moby Dick. I f you read to the end, you will realize anew what a great gift hope is.

Historia
It was summer in the mountains when five small children vanished from their nursery school picnic. The heat was stifling that day, the tinkle of an ice-cream van in the air.... Three-and-a-half years later, in the dead of winter, the children are returned to their families...one by one. All except for Ivy - the granddaughter of Homicide Detective Kate Wakeland. The other four children say Ivy is dead.

Almost Dickensian
Revisado: 06-18-24
Like: all the clues were there, nearly all the characters were beyond stereotypes and had the ability to surprise the reader, and justice triumphed. Circumstances were bizarre, but sadly, not unbelievable. I hope we see more of all the main characters. Slight reservation: even after 14+ hours listening, I occasionally found the narrator's voice distracting.

Historia
When genealogist Jefferson Tayte is hired to prove the identity of a black sheep in his client’s family tree, he unwillingly finds himself drawn into a murder investigation with nothing more to go on than a 150-year-old letter and a connection to a legendary ruby that has been missing for generations. As more letters are mysteriously left for him, Tayte becomes immersed in a centuries-old tale of greed, murder and forbidden love that takes his research from the wilds of the Scottish Highlands to the colour and heat of colonial India. A dark secret is buried in Jaipur. But why is it having such deadly repercussions in the present?

Great narration...I have gotten to know the protagonist through earlier books, and I like him. I always earn something about history and genealogy when I read a book in this series.

Narrator was terrific, made story come alive. Background of "the Troubles" added interest. I am ready for another helping of Duffy's humor and perspective.

Historia
Sharply observant and wickedly funny, E.F. Benson's six Mapp and Lucia novels satirize the upper-middle-class social climbers in 1920s and '30s rural England. Games of bridge and cups of tea fuel hilarious gossip and vindictive plots a-plenty. It is a masterfully sustained spotlight on the minutiae of village life - a clever and ultimately heartwarming series that seems tailor-made for audio. This second volume contains the second three books.

Narrator was EXCELLENT...consistently differentiating characters over the entire length of the book, Bravissima performance. The entire series can be summed up in two words: hilarious comeuppances. Probably best for Anglophile readers "of a certain age."

Laughs and tears and blessings
Revisado: 09-09-21
I love anything Gaffigan, so I admit to being prejudiced. I could not stop listening. Jeannie is a very privileged sufferer, but she is also a gifted storyteller...we are all lucky to have her inspirational saga available to us. I am recommending this book to folks who can take it to heart. I know I will be reading it again.

Historia
Snow is a rarity in Maura Donovan's small village in County Cork, Ireland, so she wasn't sure what to expect when a major snowstorm rolled in around Sullivan's pub. But now she's stranded in a bar full of patrons - and a suspected killer in a long-ago murder. Maura's been in Ireland less than a year and hasn't heard about the decades-old unsolved crime that took place nearby, let alone the infamous suspect, Diane Caldwell.

Like this series, but introduced to characters too many times. We know where Billy lives, we know Mick is enigmatic and Rose is "amazing." Everyone who enters the pub has to meet everyone else IN THE TEXT. Not necessary, slows the pace.

The Way We Live Now is a complex and compulsive tale that traces the career of Augustus Melmotte, a strange and mysterious financier who bursts into London society like a guided missile.
