Sad but true
Revisado: 03-13-22
Sad that racism is still so prevalent in the US and the world. Woodard is an amazing writer of historical truths.

I love her writing, her characters and stories. They also help me learn about a culture very different from my own.

Wonderful book!y
Revisado: 04-14-16
I really enjoyed listening to this book. It was really well read as well as well written. It was a good follow-up to the kitchen house. While I very much liked the ending, I thought it was a bit too happy for the day and time about which it was written

Sweet story
Revisado: 11-12-15
It was one of those heartwarming stories that made me smile. Not great literature but a nice feel goodlisten.
As a person who has long worked with special needs kids including ASD , I do find it implausible that this family did not get any additional support from the school, state devices etc. I kept thinking where's the social service component? I know what's available for kiddos like this and either the author doesn't or chose to ignore that fact.

Historia
On May 1, 1915, with WWI entering its tenth month, a luxury ocean liner as richly appointed as an English country house sailed out of New York, bound for Liverpool, carrying a record number of children and infants. The passengers were surprisingly at ease, even though Germany had declared the seas around Britain to be a war zone. For months, German U-boats had brought terror to the North Atlantic.

Good but a bit dry
Revisado: 03-23-15
The past few Larson books I've read told interwove two stories while this was the story of the ship and passengers/crew of the Lusitania without to my mind a parallel story. Good information well told but not what I've come to expect.

I did not know the history of sulfa and how important it was. I think of penicillin as the first antibiotic and was glad to learn about this important precursor.

Historia
The story begins in 1962. On a rocky patch of the sun-drenched Italian coastline, a young innkeeper, chest-deep in daydreams, looks out over the incandescent waters of the Ligurian Sea and spies an apparition: a tall, thin woman, a vision in white, approaching him on a boat. She is an actress, he soon learns, an American starlet, and she is dying. And the story begins again today, half a world away, when an elderly Italian man shows up on a movie studio's back lot - searching for the mysterious woman he last saw at his hotel decades earlier.
