Historia
Singapore, 1939: Life on the eve of World War II just isn't what it used to be for Walter Blackett, head of British Singapore's oldest and most powerful firm. No matter how forcefully the police break one strike, the natives go on strike somewhere else. His daughter keeps entangling herself with the most unsuitable beaus, while her intended match, the son of Blackett's partner, is an idealistic sympathizer with the League of Nations and a vegetarian.

I wish J. G. Farrell had lived to write more books
Revisado: 06-19-22
Farrell's British Empire trilogy is absolutely brilliant. Powerful satire coupled with compelling storytelling. Mike Grady's narration adds a great deal as well. I also highly recommend Troubles and The Siege of Krishnapur by the same author.

Historia
Written at the request of Charles Dickens, North and South is a book about rebellion that poses fundamental questions about the nature of social authority and obedience. Gaskell expertly blends individual feeling with social concern and her heroine, Margaret Hale, is one of the most original creations of Victorian literature. When Margaret Hale's father leaves the Church in a crisis of conscience she is forced to leave her comfortable home in the tranquil countryside of Hampshire....

Masterful performance of an excellent book.
Revisado: 02-05-19
Juliet Stevenson is absolutely amazing. She doesn't narrate, she performs. Her male voices are as believable and pleasing to listen to as her female voices. The story itself is very engaging. The heroine is a strong character in difficult circumstances. The discussions of labor/management relations are very interesting and seem very advanced for the time. There are some great explorations of religious belief and unbelief that are deftly handled by the author. She is skilled at presenting both sides of an argument. I highly recommend this book as succeeding on both emotional and intellectual levels.

Historia
In this Booker Prize-winning work, Barry Unsworth follows the failing fortunes of William Kemp, a merchant pinning his last chance to a slave ship; his son, who needs a fortune because he is in love with an upper-class woman; and his nephew, who sails on the ship as its doctor because he has lost all he has loved. The voyage meets its demise when disease spreads among the slaves and the captain's drastic response provokes a mutiny.

Beautifully written and Masterfully narrated.
Revisado: 09-25-18
This is, quite simply,a modern masterpiece. It is everything that great literature should be - eloquent, profound, entertaining, and accessible. The topic of slavery is terribly difficult to read about, but so important to acknowledge and be well informed upon. Unsworth's amazing novel approaches the subject from a unique perspective that is both emotionally affecting and intellectually stimulating without sacrificing good old story telling.
David Rintoul's performance is nothing short of brilliant. His many accents, his understanding of the text, and his perfect pacing all added greatly to the overall experience. This one is definitely worth a credit.

Truly a Literary Masterpiece.
Revisado: 08-06-18
I don't think this novel has always received its full due as more than just an adventure novel of revenge. This may be because it has so often been published and read in an abridged form. If you really want to appreciate all of Dumas' great historical and philosophical insights, then you really need to experience the full unabridged text of this novel (and this version of the audiobook allows you to do that). There is so much emotional depth to this story and it is so beautifully written that it establishes Dumas unquestionably as one of the great authors. Bill Homewood's narration is also superb. This is a must read.

A bumper collection of classic fun and games from one of BBC Radio 4's best-loved and most enduring comedy panel games. The inimitable Humphrey Lyttelton is in the chair for these 36 hilarious editions, collected together for the first time. I thoroughly enjoy British panel shows, but this self-proclaimed "antidote to panel shows" has got to be my favorite panel show of all time. Only "The Unbelievable Truth" and television's "Would I Lie to You" even come close for me. This is a marvelous treasury of old programs from the series. The wit and humor is wonderful. I have listened several times and plan to listen many more. If you enjoy this treasury, be sure to buy the second volume. Both are well worth a credit.

Great performance of an excellent story!
Revisado: 07-15-13
McCready's performance alone would make this enjoyable even if the book wasn't so well written. The last five hours are especially exciting, fast paced, and filled with adventure. Doyle includes a lot of humor in the book which McCready expertly delivers. I immediately started looking for other books narrated by McCready.
