Too much dialogue
Revisado: 10-08-19
The dialogue, which I believe is what the author imagined it took place in real life, is served best in a fictional account based on a true story. I prefer my true crime to be simply facts.

Historia
The ancient books of Genesis and Enoch tell us that sprit beings known as the Watchers descended to the Earth, had sex with women, and begat a hybrid race of offspring known as the Nephilim. Such tales are as old as humanity itself. These histories and accounts of visitations and subsequent mixed-blood, alien-human races comprise the bulk of the world's myths, legends, religions, and superstitions.

The narration! Nooooo...
Revisado: 06-14-19
Unfortunately the narration killed it for me and I ended up abandoning this one. The story is interesting enough but I couldn’t get over the narrators cadence. If you’re a fan of the voiceovers from old 40s and 50s newsreels, then you’ll enjoy it. Alas, I’m not a fan.

Good but for the end
Revisado: 01-08-19
This is thoroughly chiling fictional account of the dommed Franklin Expedition which I enjoyed overall but a couple of things dowrated this for me towards the end.
First, I found out that the name of the most nefarious character in Dan Simmons account was actually a real person on the real Terror (as listed in the crew manifest). I guess it disturbed me somewhat that Simmons did not at least pick someone purely fictional for his "bad" guy. It seemed somewhat disrespectful to attribute some pretty bad characterization to someone who was a real person, unless there is evidence of that personality.
And, lastly, I did not like the ending. It seemed way too improbable to me for the story being fictionalized here.
The narration was excellent.

Primarily set in Memphis, four loosely-connected strangers, caught up in their lives, find their worlds annihilated by the swiftly-moving plague. Alex Connelly is a wealthy young executive. This would have gotten more stars from me if it was not so unilaterally good and bad. The villains were a little too one dimensional and the “cat hatred” a little too pointed. Still, there was a solid plot and interesting storyline.

Overall it was good, but I found myself a little bored at times. Obviously, McCandless fate was horrifying and finding out how he met his fate was disturbing. There were definitely some great parts, but I've enjoyed the other Krakauer books more.
