Historia
Former spy Maggie Bird came to the seaside village of Purity, Maine, eager to put the past behind her after a mission went tragically wrong. These days, she’s living quietly on her chicken farm, still wary of blowback from the events that forced her early retirement. But when a body turns up in Maggie’s driveway, she knows it’s a message from former foes who haven’t forgotten her. Maggie turns to her local circle of old friends—all retirees from the CIA—to help uncover the truth about who is trying to kill her, and why.

I felt the novel had authenticity as well as thrills and chills!
Revisado: 04-24-24
The main protagonists are very likeable despite that they can shoot bad guys dead. I enjoyed the sparring between Jo, the small-town police chief, and Maggie, the ex-CIA spy, familiar with international travel and cities, who didn’t have a home until she retired her suitcases and from her job. The story is not a fast read because the author takes her time to introduce her characters and their backstories to the reader, but there are mysteries, violent attacks, and loving relationships from the start. I was very reluctant to stop listening when I had to, and very eager to pick it up again the next day. Tess Gerritsen is a great thriller and mystery writer, and the audiobook voice-readers are excellent.

One of the hosts is uniquely funny.
Revisado: 10-22-23
The radio shows are good, but one of the two male hosts has an extremely funny gothic sense of humor. His voice is also more flexible than the other host. The other man who replaced him has a more pedestrian delivery of his jokes and not so funny. I don't know why the really excellent host left or was replaced, but he alone is worth listening to this podcast old-time show.

Historia
Valentine Layton, the Duke of Malvern, has twin problems: literally. It was always his father’s hope that Valentine would marry Miss Arabella Tarleton. But, unfortunately, too many novels at an impressionable age have caused her to grow up...romantic. So romantic that a marriage of convenience will not do and after Valentine’s proposal she flees into the night determined never to set eyes on him again. Arabella’s twin brother, Mr. Bonaventure “Bonny” Tarleton, has also grown up...romantic. And fully expects Valentine to ride out after Arabella.

Hilarious, gloriously engaging, and the most fun I have had listening to an audiobook in twenty years of listening
Revisado: 06-23-23
I am not a fan of the Romance genre, and I have spent 70 years avoiding most reads (and listens) and TV shows, especially Hallmark movies, that proudly proclaimed that the subject was a romance of some sort. The only romance that touched my heart at all was Romeo and Juliet, and we all know how that turned out.
However, I was curious about gay romances since I only recently have been able to access them. I read a lot, but books with gay main characters have only lately become mainstream and accessible to the general reader. I have always been insatiably curious and I read everything in every genre at least once because that is what I do.
This will not be my last gay romance, nor will I automatically walk away from any romance novel, I suspect, if the book is one by Alexis Hall or one that is as much fun as this book. Although I am not gay, and I have always despised Romance genres of any stripe, I loved this novel! The author has written a delightful and a hilarious romantic romp! Every page was silly, witty and incredibly fun!
I am also adding the narrator Nicholas Boulton to my list of ‘following’! I plan to buy anything Boulton narrates! Omg, but he got it all so right! Tone, inflection, timing - he is PERFECT!

Historia
S.T., a domesticated crow, is a bird of simple pleasures: hanging out with his owner Big Jim, trading insults with Seattle's wild crows (i.e. "those idiots"), and enjoying the finest food humankind has to offer: Cheetos®. Then Big Jim's eyeball falls out of his head, and S.T. starts to think something isn't quite right. Even the slobbering affection of Big Jim's loyal but dim-witted dog, Dennis, fails to cure Big Jim's debilitating malady. S.T. is left with no choice but to abandon his old life and venture out into a wild and frightening new world with his trusty steed Dennis.

‘Hollow Kingdom’ is bittersweet, a madcap comedy and a lovely elegy all together.
Revisado: 05-24-23
My hometown is Seattle, so I recognized all of the places where action happens as well as the regional jokes. The writing is full of literary insight. The story is heartrending and fun and silly. ‘Hollow Kingdom’ is a high-end love story for human and animal culture, told with a tongue planted firmly in cheek. I often had both tears of sadness and laughter while listening. Highly recommend! I loved this wonderful fantasy!

Historia
When Constance Reid's new husband, Sir Clifford Chatterley, returns from war paralyzed and in a wheelchair, she sees her future wither. As their marriage grows loveless, she mourns the desires fated to go unfulfilled. But a stirring fascination with Oliver Mellors, the estate's coarse, taciturn gamekeeper, blooms into feelings she feared had died. Soon the lovers find themselves entangled in scandal, and their taboo affair becomes as pernicious as it is passionate.

I am ROTF at the utter ridiculousness in this novel!
Revisado: 03-10-23
The voice reader was very good, although she does have sort of a hiccup style of delivering sentences. It was a little distracting. However, the book itelf eventually became all I noticed. I cannot believe this novel has become canon of a sort! As literature, it is the silliest melodrama I’ve ever read. As porn, I guess a case could be made for that in some circles. In any case, I couldn’t stop laughing once I reached the halfway point. I was expecting a love story, or else something insightful, literary. But instead, for me this book was pure inadvertant silliness, more like a middle-school girl’s diary of the dramas going on with her and her middle-school peers, all with literary pretensions. I laughed and laughed.

Historia
Stories of Your Life and Others presents characters who must confront sudden change-the inevitable rise of automatons or the appearance of aliens-while striving to maintain some sense of normalcy. In the amazing and much-lauded title story (the basis for the 2016 movie Arrival), a grieving mother copes with divorce and the death of her daughter by drawing on her knowledge of alien languages and non-linear memory recollection.

Brilliant short stories!
Revisado: 03-05-23
‘Stories of Your Life and Others’ by Ted Chiang includes eight short stories which provoke and surprise! I detected either humor-inflected drama, or drama-inflected humor, in every story, tongue firmly inside the cheek even as the story was accurately representing the Human Condition of angst and existential anxieties.

Historia
George Eliot's most ambitious novel is a masterly evocation of diverse lives and changing fortunes in a provincial community. Peopling its landscape are Dorothea Brooke, a young idealist whose search for intellectual fulfillment leads her into a disastrous marriage to the pedantic scholar Casaubon; and the charming but tactless Dr Lydgate, whose marriage to the spendthrift beauty Rosamund and pioneering medical methods threaten to undermine his career.

A delightful 19th-century domestic novel!
Revisado: 02-16-23
I enjoyed the novel very much for its psychological insights into relationships. The village dramas of class-based social wars and young would-be lovers kept me listening for hours. The narrator, Maureen O’Brien, was fantastic! She nailed the emotions perfectly throughout, which most decidedly added depth to George Eliot’s book.

The Earth teems with sights and textures, sounds and vibrations, smells and tastes, electric and magnetic fields. But every kind of animal, including humans, is enclosed within its own unique sensory bubble, perceiving but a tiny sliver of our immense world. In An Immense World, Ed Yong coaxes us beyond the confines of our own senses, allowing us to perceive the skeins of scent, waves of electromagnetism, and pulses of pressure that surround us.
