Particularly Good Narration
Revisado: 08-30-19
I really could not stop listening to this book. The narration was excellent to the point that I could see in my mind's eye every character. The characterisation in the novel was also very good and I just liked and cared about what happened to every character. The story was perhaps not as gripping as it could have been but everything else was so superb this is well worth a listen

Historia
For Mrs Pargeter, it is a matter of principle that she should complete any of her late husband's unfinished business. Amongst his many bequests, perhaps the most valuable is his little black book, in which he listed all the people who ever worked for him, with details of their particular skill sets. This means that whenever Mrs P has a crime to solve, she can readily contact someone with the relevant expertise.

A bit lazy on planning the story line
Revisado: 02-09-19
I normally enjoy the Ruth Galloway mysteries as they provided a good snap shot of some time in history. This one was very light on the archaeology and history. The story seemed to fluff around for ages about what the characters were eating and other mundane general just living with no clues as to the culprit and all of a sudden, boom in one chapter all is suddenly revealed. Come on Elly play fair, do your research and plan the writing to maintain interest throughout the whole story and build to a climax.

Gripping and Surprising Spy Story
Revisado: 05-09-17
I battled a few times to get into this book and stopped listening. Until I persevered and once past the rather slow and depressing beginning I was gripped. The story moves along and with many twists and turns and a surprise ending. It turned out to be a rather good spy story and very atmospheric of what Istanbul must have been like at the time. Well worth a credit.

Historia
This is the first volume in a bold new series that tells the stories of all peoples, connecting historical events from Europe to the Middle East to the far coast of China, while still giving weight to the characteristics of each country. Susan Wise Bauer provides both sweeping scope and vivid attention to the individual lives that give flesh to abstract assertions about human history. This narrative history employs the methods of "history from beneath" - literature, epic traditions, private letters, and accounts - to connect kings and leaders with the lives of those they ruled.

Not worth the credit ! Unlistenable !
Revisado: 01-03-17
The story started with ancient Mesopotamia then went on to Rome and Greece my favourite periods in history. BUT the way this is presented is not at all interesting and actually unlistenable. Period ! After three chapters we gave up !

Historia
The year is 1929. As the world teeters on the brink of a global recession, Bletchley Park plays host to a rather special event. MI5 is celebrating its 20th anniversary, and a select band of former and current employees are gathering for a weekend of music, dance, and heavy drinking. Among them is Sir Hilary Manningham Butler, a middle-aged woman whose entire adult life has been spent masquerading as a man. She doesn't know why she has been invited, but it is clear she is not the only one with things to hide.

Wonderfully well acted.Story a little far fetched
Revisado: 08-09-16
The narrator was great. At all times I was never in doubt which character was speaking and each one was wonderfully well captured. In any fiction one must suspend belief a little bit but this novel really went off the track in the tale and lost my concern for the characters and interest in the outcome of the tale as the story went increasingly into fantasy.

Stories Very Dated
Revisado: 04-28-14
Apart from the story about the race horses, which was very enjoyable, the stories are all very dated . They seem to ramble and be very verbose and not get to the story. Several presuppose a suspension of rational belief and a general belief in the supernatural which I do not believe is common today.

Beware if you don't like violence
Revisado: 08-04-13
This is a well crafted story with a start, a middle and an end. It certainly gripped me to the end. But for my liking this story had far too much very graphic violence. and the hero is a very flawed character indeed. I prefer my heros if not perfect than at least a little admirable.

You will love it !
Revisado: 08-04-13
This novel is not strictly in Le Carre's usual genre of the spy novel but it has the pace and mystery and well written characteristics of his other novels. What sets this one apart is Le Carre's interpretation / reading of his own characters..He really brings them all to life and gets the accents and manerisms just down pat, to the extent that I could easily visualize each and every one of them and felt I knew them all intimately. Obviously he has an advantage in narrating his own work but I would still rate this the best narration of any book I have yet listened to. Somehow his writing has become more subtle and sophisticated with amusing nuances or perhaps it is his interpretation of his material that makes this a truly a great listen. Great story as well.
