Historia
When Gyre Price lied her way into this expedition, she thought she’d be mapping mineral deposits and that her biggest problems would be cave collapses and gear malfunctions. She also thought that the fat paycheck - enough to get her off-planet and on the trail of her mother - meant she’d get a skilled surface team, monitoring her suit and environment, keeping her safe. Keeping her sane. Instead, she got Em. Em sees nothing wrong with controlling Gyre’s body with drugs or withholding critical information to “ensure the smooth operation” of her expedition.

slow burn, character driven horror
Revisado: 06-27-23
the two leads are messy, toxic women stuck in a nightmare scenario. they felt so real and human, and i loved how they grew together. it made the horror that much scarier, too.
the book takes its time, and there’s plenty of caving minutiae, but the characters are worth it.
huge props to the narrator as well. the emotion she put behind the voices especially was spot on

Historia
Among the ashes of a dying world, an agent of the Commandment finds a letter. It reads: Burn before reading. Thus begins an unlikely correspondence between two rival agents hellbent on securing the best possible future for their warring factions. Now, what began as a taunt, a battlefield boast, becomes something more. Something epic. Something romantic. Something that could change the past and the future. Except the discovery of their bond would mean the death of each of them. There’s still a war going on, after all. And someone has to win. That’s how war works, right?

good for them! good for them!!!
genuinely a very beautiful and poetic romance scifi. the ambiguity of the prose is definitely intentional and it’s not for everyone. but it was for me!
