Grave Sight draws listeners into the intriguing world of Harper Connelly, a woman with a unique gift: she can "see" the deceased and how they died. A teenage girl from a small Ozarks town is missing and feared dead. Hired by local police, Harper locates the girl's body in a nearby forest. But there's more than one corpse in those woods, and the second one raises questions no one wants to ask.

Entertaining

A light mystery with plenty of great characterization. The real mystery of it all is how anyone makes it through a really rough childhood but these characters are a great example of resilience in the face of it all. I definitely want to read more of these.

I have been reading/listening and rereading these books since the 90s. They are timeless and original. I love the social commentary and depiction of the southwest.

Historia
Colin Dickey is on the trail of America's ghosts. Crammed into old houses and hotels, abandoned prisons and empty hospitals, the spirits that linger continue to capture our collective imagination, but why? His own fascination piqued by a house hunt in Los Angeles that revealed derelict foreclosures and "zombie homes", Dickey embarks on a journey across the continental United States to decode and unpack the American history repressed in our most famous haunted places.

Brilliant and humanity centered
Revisado: 02-02-25
This was even better than i had hoped. It’s an in depth discussion of our interest in ghosts based on cultural, sociological and historical issues. It covers everything from stereotypical ghost hunter characters to the repercussions of whitewashed history. The ideas behind the trope of ghosts are fascinating and heartbreaking. If you read/listen to this you won’t be disappointed.

Historia
Sorrowful widows, vengeful jezebels, innocent maidens, wronged lovers, former slaves, the odd axe-murderess—America's female ghosts differ widely in background, class, and circumstance. Yet one thing unites them: their ability to instill fascination and fear, long after death. Here are the stories behind some of the best-known among them, as well as the lesser-known—though no less powerful. A Haunted History of Invisible Women offers a unique lens on the role these ghostly legends play both within the spook-seeking corners of our minds and in the consciousness of a nation.

Very thoughtful
Revisado: 01-27-25
I only wish there could have been a little bit more editing on a few chapters. A bit overwrought to say any mother would die for her kid? Everything in context you know. But that’s just me? If you hear what i am talking about then you understand otherwise never mind. Really great study of our cultural norms and obsessions. Even a couple of really creepy parts i was surprised to keep thinking about since i thought it would all be reassuringly academic. Nope. I was happy to learn a lot of history too. Overall I recommend this to anyone who likes to learn and understand why so many of us can’t help but be fascinated by ghost stories.

The result is filled with important revelations about our nation's leader and disturbing insights into his childhood, his family, his business dealings, and his unusual relationship with alternative facts.

Very enlightening
Revisado: 01-24-25
This is a very interesting and compelling look into the psyche of 47. I got this book at the beginning of covid but after the election that year i figured i didn’t have to finish reading it. Lol who woulda thunk it. So of course now i became reinterested. It’s really a painful book if you have any compassion at all. I was horrified through parts of it also because my family dynamics were really similar and a couple of my childhood experiences made me realize that i came very close to winding up as a seriously destructive person. Luckily i went the creative route. Listening to this book was like learning how to read xrays from human experience. I mean you’re not gonna wind up with the knowledge that a psychiatrist has by any means but you will definitely wind up with a few more tools in your box and an understanding of how people end up rationalizing their decisions. You will learn about the president and yourself.

Much better than what i usually find
Revisado: 12-31-24
Really an excellent mystery. I could see some network wanting to pick this up - but hopefully not because they would ruin it! The villain is such a villain! The characters are well rounded for a mystery and not just pawns. It doesn’t just end where it typically would. It lingers on the psychological vista. I would recommend. Also not overly violent really except for some forensic type descriptions and scuffles. No animals killed either- i really hate when they stoop to that trope. I am planning on listening to more when i find them.

Historia
Riverside Close is a picture-perfect community. The six exclusive and attractive houses are tucked far away from the noise and grime of city life, allowing the residents to enjoy beautiful gardens, pleasant birdsong, and tranquility from behind the security of a locked gate. It is the perfect idyll, until the Kentworthy family arrives, with their four giant, gas-guzzling cars, gaggle of shrieking children, and plans for a garish swimming pool in the backyard. Obvious outsiders, the Kentworthys do not belong in Riverside Close, and quickly offend every last one of the neighbors.

Lame interlude
Revisado: 12-24-24
I have read other Horowitz books and liked them. I quit this one about two hours in. You don’t need to include sad animal deaths in cozy mysteries. It’s a cheap stupid ploy and this one was extremely aggravating. Just taking forever for the old ladies to find their poor pet. These are supposed to be cozy type mysteries where whoever gets murdered is mostly a prop type character so why ruin the book just to add to supposed motive? Pathetic plot device.

Fun listen
Revisado: 12-07-24
This is the third book in the series and the second one i listened to. I enjoyed it. It’s a twist on traditional mystery tropes. Sort of stock characters frosted with details about gourmet food and coffee obsession instead of detailed characterizations or descriptions but still good. I hope to listen to quite a few more of these mysteries but for now there are only 3.

Weird but engaging
Revisado: 12-04-24
For the first half of the book i felt like i was listening to seth mcfarlen when the actor tried to do an American accent. Totally distracting. The way the story was going i kept wondering about the author. Was it AI generated? Lots of unexpected plot twists and characters dispatched unexpectedly. Ending brought in another supernatural element unexpectedly. It was good because i couldn’t tell where it was going. Lots of silly details thrown in throughout about clothes. Can’t give it 5 stars because too cheesy for that but i will listen to more of these stories. I sew and listen to stories like these where i can still pay attention to what i am doing.
