Revisado: 07-28-22
Another amazing performance by Gerard Doyle brings Diana Wynne Jones’s beautiful writing to life! The story is complex, but very well crafted, and I loved how the narrator brought each of the many characters to life - especially my favorites, Tonino and Benvenuto. Highly recommended!

Awful cliffhanger!
Revisado: 06-27-22
This is a great series, and the narrator is excellent. However, this book ends on a dreadful cliffhanger. Or at least it seemed so to me. I really wanted to know what would happen in the next couple of minutes, and I didn’t find out - the book just ended. For this reason I’m giving the book 4 stars instead of 5. Hopefully there will be another book, so we can all find out how the story continues!

A great narrator made an old favorite new!
Revisado: 05-15-22
I’ve read “That Hideous Strength” several times now, and despite some reservations about certain aspects of the story, I like the book. The trilogy as a whole is captivating and imaginative, and this is a great conclusion.
Also, the narrator is impressive! He creates distinct voices for all the characters without exaggerating or over dramatizing the narrative. And this particular narrative would be quite easy to over dramatize!
His thoughtful narration had a very interesting effect on me. I found myself liking - or at least sympathizing with - more than one character I couldn’t stand in the book. For me, this was most notable with the Ulsterman, McPhee. I found him insufferable when I read the book, but actually hearing him speak, as this narrator voiced him, I began to almost like him. Mark Studdock, too, came to life in a very interesting way, so that I could really appreciate his struggles, and his actual heroism at the end of the story.
Definitely recommended!

Such beautiful writing!
Revisado: 04-21-22
Frances Harding never ceases to amaze me! Her writing is so beautiful, and her storytelling so compelling! I didn’t imagine I would love this book as much as I did - it has become a favorite. And the narrator was wonderful - very clear, expressive, and able to give distinct voices to a wide array of characters. Wonderful!

Historia
In Wisdom, Shelter. That’s the official motto of the Scholomance. I suppose you could even argue that it’s true—only the wisdom is hard to come by, so the shelter’s scant. Our beloved school does its best to devour all its students—but now that I’ve reached my senior year and have actually won myself a handful of allies, it’s suddenly developed a particular craving for me. Even if I somehow make it through the endless waves of maleficaria that it keeps throwing at me, I haven’t any idea how my allies and I are going to make it through the graduation hall alive.

Another awful cliffhanger!
Revisado: 10-09-21
Naomi Novik has done it again! After the cliffhanger ending of “A Deadly Education,” I didn’t think that an even worse cliffhanger was possible- but it is! I can’t wait to find out what happens next, but I will have to.
As to the story and the writing, I think this book is even better than the last one. El is just as snarky and entertaining as ever, but her personality develops more dimensions as she faces new problems and forges new relationships.
Which brings us to Orion. Here I will just say that we still have a lot to learn about him, and I hope we will in the next volume. He’s definitely a bit of a puzzle!
Another character who knows more than she’s letting on = Precious. Although I suppose, she can’t really help it, being a mouse.
For YA readers (and their parents), this is a cracking good story, with interesting moral questions and a good amount of excitement (some of it somewhat gruesome and involving monsters). There is more sex than in the last volume, including one actual sex scene, but nothing too drastic.
A word about the narration: The reader does an excellent job! She voices the different characters really well, and her reading flows nicely. The only thing I didn’t love about her narration is that she tends to overemphasize the ends of phrases, as though they were the ends of sentences.
In sum, an amazing book, excellently narrated! I can’t wait for the final volume!

Featuring beloved characters from Code Name Verity and The Pearl Thief, as well as a remarkable new voice, this brilliant, breathlessly plotted novel by award-winning author Elizabeth Wein is a must-listen. Facing a seemingly endless war, 15-year-old Louisa Adair wants to fight back, make a difference, do something-anything to escape the Blitz and the ghosts of her parents, who were killed by enemy action.

Wonderful YA Historical Fiction!
Revisado: 07-30-20
I have come to expect great writing, engaging characters and amazing plots from Elizabeth Wein, and this book ticked all the boxes! I loved the characters, and the story was amazing! The narrator also did a fantastic job, creating distinct accent and voices for everyone - and I loved that she could actually sing! That added so much, in a novel featuring several musicians!

What a fantastic story! And great reader!
Revisado: 02-11-20
This Victorian fantasy/Mystery kept me thoroughly engrossed . The prose is gorgeous, the plot fantastic, and the setting vividly imagined and described. I would recommend it to any teen or adult with the patience to let the plot unfold gradually, while the characters grow and change. Caveat: there are disturbing elements, and some violence, but nothing too graphic.
Kudos to the narrator, who does a beautiful job! I will look for more books she reads.
