This book was so satisfying!! What a fantastic story. I don’t usually like fantasy of this sort, but it worked so perfectly. This is a book I know I’ll be recommending to people for years.

This book was both charming and intriguing, and the narrator was fantastic. I’ve already recommended it to several friends and can’t wait to see what else this author might have. If you like stories about witches, self-discovery, and a bit of intrigue with a bit of a love plot, this book is for you!

Excellent resource!

This is a fantastic book. It is full of compelling ideas and solid action items. Even better, the author is great to listen to. I could listen to him for ages and ages! Regardless, this is a book I’ll be coming back to again and again. Would definitely recommend to anyone interested in exploring lucid dreaming.

Delightful!

What a charming and delightful story! It was nice to have different narrators for different characters, as well. They did a wonderful job. I am definitely looking forward to the next, and I will go back to read the book that came before this one, The Book Charmer!

So relaxing

Does it really work for psychic healing? I honestly don’t know. But it is so, so relaxing!! It helps me fall asleep so easily whenever I put it on. If I’ve been struggling to sleep, this almost always helps resolve that. So either way, I’m a fan!

Terrible sound quality

This has so much potential but the sound quality is horrendous. It’s fine for the intro, but the main portion of the recording sounds underwater.

You’re supposed to listen to this for multiple days in a row and I couldn’t get through more than 2 sessions. It was like nails on a blackboard. Maybe if I had headphones it would have helped??? But I can’t sleep with them or they wake me up with discomfort or twisting shortly after falling asleep. Overall? Not recommended.

Dial back the F word or lose credibility

Whitaker has a lot of solid information in here, and I did appreciate where she was coming from with her arguments. However, it's really hard to take someone seriously in their academic argumentation when the F word gets used so, so often. I understand that as a word, it can make the author more accessible to an audience. I use the word when it feels appropriate myself. That said, if you use it every paragraph or two, it starts to sound pretty trite. When I was a teenager, my mom always used to say "if you have to use the F word that often, it makes me wonder about your capacity for creativity or your grasp of vocabulary." It always annoyed me but as an adult I get it. Whitaker overuses it. And on top of that, I keep wanting to ask her what other traumas she suffered to be the one who "F's" the people in charge all the time, who doesn't care about anything but money. She brings a solid idea with good evidence, but her pavement to the ideas, peppered with so many F-bombs, creates shaky ground and leaves me lacking confidence in her ability to usefully convey scientific information or social data in a way that is relateable.

Don’t bother if you want to learn about witches in America

This isn’t a book about witches in America. This is a book about the author’s experiences, perspectives and opinions, peppered throughout with random and sometimes questionable “history”. She shadows a handful of groups and people, and talks about her experiences, but it is in no way an account of or review of the actual varieties of witchcraft in America, as we are lead to believe in the summary.

Frankly, by the end, I was thoroughly sick of hearing the author talk about other cultures only through the lens of her own personal experiences. Don’t bother with this book unless you want to read an account or how the author personally relates to some people in some groups some of the time.
