Historia
John Fowles’s The Magus was a literary landmark of the 1960s. Nicholas Urfe goes to a Greek island to teach at a private school and becomes enmeshed in curious happenings at the home of a mysterious Greek recluse, Maurice Conchis. Are these events, involving attractive young English sisters, just psychological games, or an elaborate joke, or more? Reality shifts as the story unfolds. The Magus reflected the issues of the 1960s perfectly, and it continues to create tension and concern today.

Great story telling
Revisado: 09-10-24
Interesting story. Irritating protagonist. This guy needs to get on with his life. Endless dwelling on a pointless situation.

Historia
Roger Micheldene, an English publisher, is on the loose in the US. He spends an October week shuttling between New York and Budweiser College in Pennsylvania. This exercises all his British appetites … snobbery, gluttony, anger, sloth, and lust. But Amis roasts Americans as well and serves us familiar dishes, though in a piquant sauce: the precocious undergraduate author of a far-out novel, an earnest young priest, and an alcoholic literary agent’s nymphomaniacal wife.

Very Nasty Englishman
Revisado: 05-17-23
The author is a great storyteller. However, Roger is such a horrible individual, that it is difficult to care what happens to him. He makes me feel saintly by comparison. Enjoyed satirical bits on the Church and academia and the ending was funny, but the overall effect is dark and disgusting. Make me wonder about myself for enjoying the book.

Historia
Maurice Allington has reached middle age and is haunted by death. As he says, “I honestly can’t see why everybody who isn’t a child, everybody who’s theoretically old enough to have understood what death means, doesn’t spend all his time thinking about it. It’s a pretty arresting thought.” He also happens to own and run a country inn that is haunted. The Green Man opens as Maurice’s father drops dead (had he seen something in the room?) and continues as friends and family convene for the funeral.

Great Experience

I love Kingsley Amis’ characters. The clever tale has a lot to say about our moral realities. I read the book years ago. This time it was an experience to hear it so well done.

Historia
In You Can’t Joke About That, Kat Timpf shows why much of the way we talk about sensitive subjects is wrong. We’ve created all the wrong rules. We push ourselves into unnecessary conflicts when we should feel like we’re all in this together. When someone says “you can’t joke about that,” what they really mean is “this is a subject that makes people sad or angry.”

Interesting account
Revisado: 05-02-23
It was nice to hear the author present the book. She is clever and entertaining. The book is not as funny as she is in her TV appearances. I hated the medical information part. I was interested in her comments about her loss of Christian faith. As a Roman Catholic, I can see the absurdities that we practice and she points them out. I hope that she can reject the old men in the Church eventually without rejecting the Creator.

Historia
An award-winning historian and author, Paul Hendrickson here turns his attention to one of America’s most cherished literary icons, Ernest Hemingway. Drawing on previously unpublished material, Hendrickson focuses on Hemingway’s life in its twilight, just prior to his suicide, and the seemingly singular constant in the man’s life: his boat, Pilar. On this vessel, Hemingway would entertain and travel, but it would also be the scene of some of his greatest tragedies.

It helps to be a Hemingway admirer to follow this. It is depressing. It is good scholarship since it is directly sourced. Glad I experienced it through Audible.

A sinister masterpiece, Our Mutual Friend was Dickens' last completed novel. It is perhaps his ultimate vision of a dark, macabre London and the corrupting power of money.

I first read and taught this book at ECU in 1969. Over 50 years later it is still a rich experience observing the Boffins, the Wilfers and others. I enjoy Dickens’ affirmative view of love and marriage and his contempt for evil. In 1969 I was young. Over 50 years later I have seen much good and evil and feel pretty comfortable with this old story.
