Fatal Flight brings vividly to life the year of operation of R.101, the last great British airship - a luxury liner three and a half times the length of a 747 jet, with a spacious lounge, a dining room that seated 50, glass-walled promenade decks, and a smoking room.

A Cautionary Tale
Revisado: 03-11-23
A well researched tale of why it's necessary to not rush research, design, development of technologies, especially when they're responsible for human lives. Proper diligence must be done at all times to discover and remedy any engineering issues regardless of who's ego is on the line.

A great sequel to the first installment
Revisado: 10-01-22
Simply said, this book brings together the history and geopolitics that has come to shape the world we live in. It helps one to look out and understand why hostilities exist in different regions, and why they may continue to exist. It gives us a glimpse of what our world could be as the geographic landscape slowly changes due to climate change and how their politics will evolve.

Historia
Often called the greatest novel ever written, War and Peace is at once an epic of the Napoleonic wars, a philosophical study, and a celebration of the Russian spirit. Tolstoy's genius is clearly seen in the multitude of characters in this massive chronicle, all of them fully realized and equally memorable.

A long listen but worth the time and effort
Revisado: 10-01-22
While the characters are fictional, it gives a human element to the chaos that was the Napoleonic wars. As you listen, you find yourself contemplating the motivations of the characters and their actions. It gives a glimpse of what life would be like in the lead up to war, how civilians and soldiers do their best to survive in the chaos of it all, and how they resume normality after the guns fall silent.

Historia
Matthew Dunn spent years as an MI6 field operative working on some of the West’s most clandestine missions. He recruited and ran agents, planned and participated in special operations, and operated deep undercover throughout the world. In Spycatcher he draws on this fascinating experience to breathe urgent, dynamic new life into the contemporary spy novel. Featuring deft and daring superspy Will Cochrane, Dunn paints a nerve-jangling, bracingly authentic picture of today’s secret world. It is a place where trust is precious and betrayal is cheap....

An okay story to pass the time
Revisado: 10-01-22
While not as engaging as I had hope, there is an element to the story that keeps you wanting to know the conclusion. I did feel that some the main character's dangerous encounters could have been had a little bit suspense and improvisation.

Historia
Corbin College, not quite upstate New York, winter 1959-1960: Ruben Blum, a Jewish historian—but not an historian of the Jews—is co-opted onto a hiring committee to review the application of an exiled Israeli scholar specializing in the Spanish Inquisition. When Benzion Netanyahu shows up for an interview, family unexpectedly in tow, Blum plays the reluctant host to guests who proceed to lay waste to his American complacencies. Mixing fiction with nonfiction, the campus novel with the lecture, The Netanyahus is a wildly inventive comedy of blending, identity, and politics.

While the author took some liberties in the story, he does present a brief snapshot of the history of the family that produced a man that dominates Israeli politics today. Definitely worth the read.

Understanding the past to understand the present
Revisado: 01-11-22
This book tells the complex story of what Afghanistan has become today. There are certainly no easy answers, and all the players pursue strategies with no clear end goals. In the end, salvation cannot come from men from foreign countries or from mullah who promise it but cannot give bread so that the people might live to see it. The only ones that can solve this complex puzzle is the people of Afghanistan themselves.

Historia
This memoir is an autobiographical account of the events as witnessed by Bernal Diaz - a Conquistador on that journey - a man from Spain who desperately hoped to carve out a life of riches for himself in the new world and instead found himself on an epic journey of conquest, whilst desperately fighting to stay alive, in previously unknown and unimagined lands. This is a true tale written in his own hand and translated into English. It is a gripping account of the events from the soldiers' viewpoint as each day becomes a battle for survival against incredible odds.

A daring account of the soldiers of fortune
Revisado: 01-11-22
One very impressive thing about Bernal Diaz is that his memory was quite amazing, remember so many details in of his adventures in his twilight years. While it's a story of unparalleled bravery, it is also a story of sheer madness in that these men thought could go into a country and conquer it in the fashion they did. It is a story of bringing the word of God in their right hand, and their guns in their left. They believed themselves righteous in their work for God and king. Well, while gold was enough to answer for their works to the latter, it certainly isn't enough for the former.

An engaging story two people's effort to navigate the precarious nature of China's political and economic system. The author's words sums it up, "many sold their souls" in pursuit of the promises made by China's communist system. Well worth the listen.

A wonderful critic of communism
Revisado: 01-11-22
This book is the classic case of the unspoken argument; "all men are created equal, but not all men are equally created." It really does show for what it really is communism - a ploy for a small group of privileged individuals to take power from another small group privileged individuals, all the while claiming it is the will of the people. We must always be watchful that democracy doesn't loose it's way and become the corrosive lie that communism always was.

Historia
George Orwell depicts a gray, totalitarian world dominated by Big Brother and its vast network of agents, including the Thought Police - a world in which news is manufactured according to the authorities' will and people live tepid lives by rote. Winston Smith, a hero with no heroic qualities, longs only for truth and decency. But living in a social system in which privacy does not exist and where those with unorthodox ideas are brainwashed or put to death, he knows there is no hope for him.

A warning to us
Revisado: 01-11-22
I have to say that this book really does portray what authoritarian countries like China are trying to do their populations today. They want the people to not think for themselves, becoming effectively cattle that have no value beyond producing the necessary "milk" for the consumers. In this context, the "milk" being goods for customer, the endless wars. For these countries, there always has to be an external enemy, forgetting that the greatest enemies are often the ones within ourselves.
