This book has so much science backed truth that one won't want to belive about what really happens in society. I do feel he gives some hope though. Highly recommend.

A close friendship is one of the most influential and important relationships a human life can contain. Anyone will tell you that! But for all the rosy sentiments surrounding friendship, most people don’t talk much about what it really takes to stay close for the long haul. Now two friends, Aminatou Sow and Ann Friedman, tell the story of their equally messy and life-affirming big friendship in this honest and hilarious book that chronicles their first decade in one another’s lives.

Big friendships over long distance is my life..
Revisado: 01-30-24
This book really articulated so many things I've felt over the years but never been able to put words to.. Friendship and friendships between women run so deep and hold so much, yet the supports and expectation around them are so different than those held for romantic relationships.
This book also focuses a lot on long distance friendships, which as a sojourner of almost 16 years, is a large bulk of my friendships.. It hits so hard on the unspoken hurts, the unspoken assumptions and the implied acceptibility of friendships ending with no fanfare or acknowledgement the likes of which would be normal for a "romantic" breakup which in truth is an injustice.
I think so much more deeply about this as my life goes through milestones and transitions and think of the "stretches" previous transitions required from me as a friend and from others for me and the questions now as to how those have been well handled or mishandled in the past.
As more life happens, it inevitably affects all friendships and also really highlight those cracks.. The unspoken assumptions. It is hard! It is for this reason that I have decided to introduce into my private practice, Friends Therapy.. A new and budding idea that just like couples therapy.. Some friendships are worth fighting for with mediation!

Every Therapist Should Read This Book
Revisado: 10-15-19
I feel like it's the book we all want to write. It's amazingly, deep, raw, genuine, painful and feels like it follows the curve of the therapeutic hour while simultaneously taking us through several therapeutic episodes nicely tied together in her own developmental arc. I loved it!

She had a way in this book of making you feel like the most normal girl next door while simultaneously being regal! Like you can be yourself but take over the world at the same time... Like you can adore your husband and be fiercely independent... I don't know how to describe it.. Lol. She's goals!

Historia
In this lyrical, unsentimental, and compelling memoir, the son of a Black African father and a White American mother searches for a workable meaning to his life as a Black American. It begins in New York, where Barack Obama learns that his father - a figure he knows more as a myth than as a man - has been killed in a car accident. This sudden death inspires an emotional odyssey - first to a small town in Kansas, and then to Kenya....

I love that even in Kenya a houseboy can be the father of a man who ends up going to Harvard and a grandfather of a future president of the United States. Life is a funny thing!!..

Revisado: 03-28-18
I've been hearing about this book for years and I wish I'd read it every year during graduate school because it is extremely comprehensive completely research based while somehow helping you realize that treating trauma is as much an art as it is a science. Wonderful book!

Historia
Back in 2005, the first edition of Why Gender Matters broke ground in illuminating the differences between boys and girls—how they perceive the world differently, how they learn differently, how they process emotions and take risks differently. Dr. Sax argued that in failing to recognize these hardwired differences between boys and girls, we ended up reinforcing damaging stereotypes, medicalizing misbehavior, and failing to help kids to reach their full potential.

Really Powerful Insights
Revisado: 02-07-18
I really liked this book.. I think it is indispensable for parents and teachers. Although it is clear that the writer leans right I think he does an AMAZING job of giving a balanced view backed by science and for me it was truly enlightening. There is information in this book that I never heard before and I don't think I would be likely to hear elsewhere. Worth it!

Jenifer Lewis keeps it real in this provocative and touching memoir by a Midwestern girl with a dream whose journey from poverty to Hollywood will move, shock, and inspire listeners. Told in the audacious voice her fans adore, Jenifer describes a road to fame made treacherous by dysfunction and undiagnosed mental illness, including a sex addiction. Yet, supported by loving friends and strengthened by "inner soldiers", Jenifer never stopped entertaining and creating.

A great story told at a good time!
Revisado: 01-02-18
This was what I felt an autobiography should be. A wonderful story that transports you into the person's life at all if various phases.
Although Jenifer can be extra theatrical in her delivery you can feel all the feelings in a while.
She's clearly always the main character and the best character in her stories but I'm not mad about it.. You see her heart in all of it.
After hearing autobiographies from people in their 30s and 40s... I feel like 60 is a much better age to tell your story. But only you can decide that I suppose.

Tiffany can't avoid being funny: it's just who she is. But The Last Black Unicorn is so much more than a side-splittingly hilarious collection of essays - it's a memoir of the struggles of one woman who came from nothing and nowhere. A woman who was able to achieve her dreams by reveling in her pain and awkwardness, showing the world who she really is, and inspiring others through the power of laughter.

Revisado: 12-29-17
I really liked this book. Most parts were laugh out loud funny... She tells a lot.. So much. But I still leave feeling like there were parts missing that we never really got to hear fully about. I also feel like she wrote this book a little too soon... Seven to 10 more years would have created more perspective.
