more WOKE than the other black ocean
Revisado: 04-16-25
I read another black ocean that was probably about the Ramses and mordecai son. it's been a while. the adult's storyline were pretty good but the kid story lines were more about lesbian kids and gay kids and 13 yr Olds having sex and just kinda eeww. did the author have a child come out of the closet while he was writing this?
more scifi and less woke-fi would have been better.
if you can't overlook that stuff better skip this one.

good story. bad research
Revisado: 12-31-24
ok. this isn't a spoiler but I will use a few vague references. I'm still liking the characters and the story. I also like that characters we like aren't getting killed off for the most part.
what I don't like is the flashbacks or other short sideline stories. imho those should have come way earlier in the saga.
also he could do with a little better editing and some fact checking. front gear on a commercial plane are the last thing to collapse and probably the studies part of the aircraft. aircraft tire don't need traction because they aren't drive wheels. The plane engines propel the plane, even on the ground. Helicopter rotors are easily damaged. they're delicately balanced and even hitting things that wouldn't hurt your bare hand can damage them enough to destroy the aircraft. there are other things the author writes about that he obviously has no real knowledge of and is just writing on what he assumes to be true. if you can ignore them. then it's OK but it kinda made me nuts.
other than that I really enjoyed all the book's.

starts pretty good but
Revisado: 12-16-24
it starts pretty good then it gets weird. The main character is either stupid or in denial. I have no idea but he walks thru this story as if he has no understanding of reality. I got tired of it and skipped thru the last chapters just to get to the conclusion. it became exposition of the obvious. I'm not even sure what the author's point was.
it's OK as a free book but if I would definitely refund otherwise.

I've been a fan of the destroyer series since the late 70s.
the original or first books were way better. Remo and Chun were almost invincible, as I recall. these later books are a little watered down.

Just as Fred is settling down in his new abode, he receives word that a favor is being called in, one he promised to a dangerously powerful member of otherworldly royalty. Bracing for danger, adventure, and unknown threats, Fred is instead asked to take on an entirely different role than anticipated. Acting as interim professor at one of the few universities for supernatural entities, Fred will have to navigate a strange environment, eccentric co-workers, and unenthusiastic students. Yet that alone won’t be enough, for this college has more history than the tales in its tomes.

the characters
Revisado: 07-25-24
I am so done with Quinn. it's overdone and boring now. what a dragon, the blood council and an agency gull of agents can't get this guy? it's just annoying. one of the things I said in an earlier review was how refreshing it is that the author doesn't drag out fights, inner monologues or have the same bad guy popping up all the time and yet here we ate again. if they don't end Quinn I. the next one, I'm done with this series. plus the gang is all separated now. you barely here from some of our fav characters.

Historia
After discovering just how filled with magic, intrigue, and adventure the parahuman world of being an Undead American can be, Fredrick Frankford Fletcher did exactly what was expected - he became a certified parahuman accountant. Myths and legends, as it turns out, are not so great at taking appropriate deductions and keeping their receipts, and Fred is more than happy to return to a life others view as woefully dull, expanding his accounting business to cater to various monsters and their respective financial needs.

good characters, excellent performance
Revisado: 07-11-24
I liked the stories and characters. I especially liked that each book has several different events happen and that it's not dragged out. so many authors seem to think dragging something out for chapter after chapter is a good thing. it's not. it's boring and monotonous. So is having the bad guy come back over and over and over.
this book doesn't do that.
what I didn't like and it's beginning to be annoying is what a little wussy Fred is. no matter what happens, he just stays a wuss. And of course, his GF is "strong brave woman who don't need no man". it's not terribly woke but a little. it'd be nice if Fred would man up just a little. This "I don't want to hurt anyone even if they're trying to kill me" is getting a little old and stupid.

I didn't like the diversion to other characters. it looks like there's very little of bob nikki and the bots here. fyi it's 3 short stories.
I'm trying but I could care less about these people. you, know, if you're selling pizza and all your customers love it and come to your place for pizza and then you start selling burgers you're gonna lose your business.

no resolution
Revisado: 08-01-23
so if you like stories with an ending, skip this one.
otherwise it's ok. it's interesting and makes you want to know more of what's going on but it is a short story so I guess that's kinda how they end a lot. that's the main reason I quit reading short stories.
I'm not keen on movies, books or shows that "give you something to think about". I think that's arrogant and lazy in an author. it's like the ending of LOST. they wrote themselves into a corner with no way out so they just said the entire series was just a dream. now that's arrogance.
however this wasn't a novel but a short story. I still prefer some resolution. I got enough to "think about" and enough to frustrate me in my real life. I don't need it in my entertainment. It seems like writers miss that point more and more these days.

think I'm done with this now
Revisado: 06-05-23
I really was enjoying this series. lots of exploration and discoveries but now it seems to be devolving into, what I think, the same mistake a lot of authors not just scifi but all genres. the mistake is trying to make a novel into an action movie. it just bored the hell out of me to listen to OR read a 20 minute fight scene. it's very hard to do that with the written word and they just drag it out on and on and on. Fight scenes are visual and what takes three minutes in a movie is just a monotonous boring dragging 20 minute waste.
plus the removal of characters that have been with us the entire series is just not something I'm interested in going thru. another bad mistake. we, or at least I, stay with a series because of the characters in it. we forgive a lot to enjoy the company of characters we've grown to know and love. we'll forgive the fact that thru some karmic miracle no one we love gets killed but we won't forgive killing off our favs.
I feel this is where this is headed as well as the "everything always goes wrong but we manage to get the job done" cliche is fun but not when it gets harder and harder and you take away asset after asset just to make it harder and harder. I just get to the point I can't enjoy it anymore. 6 or 7 books into a series we're ready for OUR team to start comeing out on top. They've earned it by this point and we want to see it.
this last book felt like too much to me. no story just setups for our guys to get into the deep stuff. I think this series is digging itself into a hole I don't want to go into.
I may get the next set but if it keeps heading down this path I'm returning it

Henry never realized he was special. Sure, he’s an engineer who served his country, but when the virus hit, he found himself alone in a nearly empty world. That’s the key, though: nearly empty. There’s no one left who has the technical know-how to make the world run again...except for Henry. For humanity to survive, he will have to rebuild society out of the motley crew of survivors. It might be impossible, but at the same time, Henry has always loved a challenge.

Great post apocalyptic series
Revisado: 05-04-23
This whole series was great. it's one of my favorites. Don't let naysayers who were too prudish or were offended by the main characters "harem" put you off. the few sex scenes throughout the story were a little more graphic than I prefer but I just mostly skipped thru those. The story and the characters are well worth it. Don't miss this story.
it even brings itself to a close nicely.
