Historia
If only Flashman had got on with his dinner and ignored the handkerchief dropped by a flirtatious hussy in a Calcutta hotel... well, American history might have been different, a disastrous civil war might have been avoided, and Flash Harry himself would have been spared one of the most hair-raising adventures of his misspent life. If only... but alas, the arch-rotter of the Victorian age could never resist the lure of a pretty foot.

flashy at his best

the reader is a real performer who isn't afraid to match the politically incorrect dialogue with perfectly correct accents. I loved the writing before finding the audio version, and now I want to hear the whole series just to see what our reader does with all the historical characters.

No less ambitious than the mean of Stephenson.

It has the scope, and the manly political incorrectness of subject matter, and some wonderful descriptive bits. For me it was no Baroque Cycle, or Cryptonomicon, or Anathem, or even Reamde. Those had me bleary eyed from tears, laughter, and lack of sleep. So I tried taking Seveneves audio-style, and it may have been a mistake. Some of the voices were a little too affected. They do stick in my head as separate people, though, just not people I long to revisit, like so many of Stephenson's other memorables. A friend said this book reminds him of a Role-playing game set-up, and I agree, though that is no condemnation. It is just Hard to have Humanity, in its entirety, as a focus.
