This was a really good ride. Not a GREAT ride but a good one nonetheless. There was just enough intrigue to keep me listening. I didn't have an issue at all continuing the story.

I know there are 3 more books in the series but I think I am going to bow out at this point. I feel like the story as it is with the unknown ahead, is enough. I don't need to know what comes next. I am good with how it is after book 6 and have no desire to keep going.

There are a few things in the story that I was kinda like eeehhh...no, I don't like that turn. But I still stuck it out. It was a good story. I'm happy where I am with it. Great narration as always by Ms. Fortgang :) She never disappoints.

There are little sparks of potential in this story that inevitably get ruined by poor story execution or poor narration. The longer I listen to the story, the more I mentally say please END THIS!

It starts off like it might be a super cute, cozy read/listen. I kind of wanted that after listening to the likes of Quicksilver, the Desert Cursed series, and ACOTAR. Sometimes you just want something light-hearted and feel good. This book would amp up to be just that and then take a weird turn. I've got just under 4 hours left but I can tell you now that I won't be finishing this book. NONE of the characters are likeable...they all have a whiny, belligerent side to them. NONE of them respect the word "NO." They are just all very annoying.

I'd like to know what Millie is hiding and I think I just hit the point where I would begin to find out, but the introduction of yet ANOTHER unlikeable character is just too much. I just don't like this book. In reality, its supremely unrealistic. I mean, I know we read with the expectation of suspending logical reality but this book seems to kind of pull from the most random tropes and mash them all together like a sloppy sandwich.

I can respect when a narrator knows their bounds. Not everyone is able to affect a different voice for each character. However, this narrator made it too difficult to determine who was talking. There were many times I was lost because I couldn't figure out who was talking. Its not really her fault...the whole book is just bad to me.

I am sure this is perfect for someone out there but it is definitely not for me. I think my biggest gripe is that the characters are all annoying. Maybe it will do better for someone else...not me.

I really enjoyed this story. If you are a fan of or at least have read ACOTAR, some things may seem similar. So as not to spoil anything, I will not say what those similarities are...could literally be ANYTHING. But, if you enjoyed that series, then I think this one will also be enjoyable. Maybe a little more so.

Be completely aware that this story contains some "adult" themes, language, and scenes...all graphically done. During those, *eh hem* adult scenes, I'd suggest turning the volume down a bit because the female narrator kinda gives her all LOL. As with most books with sex scenes, I get to a point were I can skip past them. I'm more into the story than the physical love story.

There is action, humor (not comedy, humor), steam, difficulties, and random asides that might make sense later. The story definitely grabbed my attention and held it. The dual narrators was a great idea, IMO. I am quite upset that now I have to wait until November for the next installment. At current, there was enough of a "tie up" at the end that I don't HAVE to read the next book BUT there was also enough interwoven intrigue that I WANT to read the next book.

I think this one is worth it. I waited a few days to review it just in case that "now that it's over, this book was dumb!" possibility popped up. It didn't. How I felt when it ended is how I still feel now. Good book. Worth the read, listen, credit.

I really wanted to like this story. I should have known from the narrator's constant uppity, uber cheerful reading that the story would grate on my nerves. This book is slow. I don't really mind slow books but there was not enough depth in the slowness for me to grab onto. The MC got to be sooooooo annoying...its like are you really THAT insipid?? Are you that BLIND?? Are you THAT RIDICULOUS??

The one part in the book that I thought was going to be interesting fell so flat it might as well be a pancake. I was so excited! I was like ok NOW we're talking. No, we were NOT talking. I eventually went back and read some more reviews and I saw more than a few talking about how boring the first THREE books are. There is no way I am going to sit through this droll for another TWO books when I am struggling to finish this one. I wanted to get to the end but at current I have about an hour left and I have already moved on to another story.

To be fair, things do happen in this book. Its just those things that happen aren't interesting enough to be able to sustain my interest. I feel like if they had happened in another book, I probably would have loved it! But I just cannot continue this book. The whining and the overly happy voice the narrator used for the MC drove me nuts. The story not going anywhere drove me nuts.

As the reviews show, this book and series is for quite a few people. I am not one of them :(

I moseyed on over here from the Forty Proof series because I truly enjoyed it. As I began this book, it was very clear that this was an "early in Shannon Mayers' writing career" series. The first book starts off like you're in the middle of a story you should already know. I found myself checking multiple times to be sure I had started the first book and not the second or something. She really just throws you in the fray and you have to pick up the clues as the story progresses. It was a little disorienting but as I continued to listen, I was able to create the timeline needed in my head.

Overall, the stories are good. Its not my favorite of her works but so far, I will be listening to the rest of the series. She does have a tendency to repeat phrases over and over again. I also find many similarities between this series and the Forty Proof series...so much so that I wonder if any of these tropes are mirrored in Mayers' personal life (divorce, being told she's weak when she's not, always finding friends with the oddball crew, falling hard and fast for the wrong man, etc).

Lauren Fortgang can do no wrong in my eyes. She's a great narrator and this also gave me a chance to see how her talent has grown. She does an awesome job with the voices as well.

This series is a ride. The action parts are pretty good. There is romance. Its got fantasy. All the things one may like in a story.

I usually avoid spoilers but with this book...I kinda don't care lol. I don't spoil anything major...very minor details...VERY minor. But just wanted to advise just in case you're a person who doesn't want to know anything about a story before going into it.

The story started off ok...I was moderately annoyed with the imposed god complex Huntyr was giving her "caretaker," Lord, but I suppose that's how abuse can go...you make excuses for them because they have implanted it in your brain that you owe them your life. I stuck around because I thought this was going to be the story of a bad @$$ female lead kicking @$$ and taking names only for her to be knocked around like a ragdoll every time...and I don't mean the whole "I can't let them know who/what I am" thing...even when she was supposedly herself, she was mid at best. But I suppose the beginning was foreshadowing this as the story starts off with her getting beat up...

I was also not a fan of her consistent, uncalled for anger issues taking over. Wolf would say hi and she would immediately go YOU DONT KNOW ME LEAVE ME ALONE YOU DONT CARE. Like, girl...calm down. Huntyr whined and complained A LOT and it got too unbearable. I knew the "twist" was coming before it happened however I will admit it didn't happen to WHO I thought it would...but it was inevitable that it would happen.

At current, there is only 1 hour left in the book. I abandoned it about 2 weeks ago and really feel no draw to see how this ends...on top of this being part of a series. Even if I do finish the book, I will not continue the series.

As far as a comparison to Fourth Wing, its a school where you could die by trials or classmates...and falling for the one person you're not supposed to...that's about where the comparisons end for me.

I had to speed the reading up because it dragged. The performances weren't bad. I think they did the best with what they were given. I hate to leave the story unfinished but I really don't have a desire to go back and finish it :( Its got good bones, a good premise, but I am not a fan of how it was executed. I don't mean any of this as a dig to the author. At the end of the day, I am not the target audience for this story and that's ok. Many love it while many less do not...its balance :)

So, to state the obvious, this book is long. But in all honesty, I didn't realize how long it was until I was about half through it and then read the reviews to see if everyone else was liking the book as I was. That's when I saw people complaining about how long the book is...I think that if I hadn't read those reviews, the length of the book wouldn't have been an issue until maybe the very end of it.

I stumbled across this book because I was getting tired of what Audible was recommending to me as my next read. I feel like there is zero variation in the recommended reads and displayed categories. Its all the same books over and over again. So, I went to the search bar and typed a random letter (q in this instance) just to see what would come up. This book is one of the ones I found. The premise was interesting and the sample snatched my interest. So I downloaded it and settled in for the ride.

The format of the story isn't brand new. The perspective changes every now and then which made me worry. Every time the chapter changed I was concerned that the perspective would change and we would be chapters away from a gripping part of the story before getting back to it. Fortunately this was not the case. When the perspective changes, its always brief and never excessive. The story maintained its flow even with those minor and short "interruptions."

There were moments of mild frustration with one of the characters but its the kind of frustration you want to have in a story. It keeps you involved and somewhat interactive if you will. From the beginning, its a gamble on how the story will play out. On the one hand, it could go exactly as you want it. On the other hand, it can go completely tits up. The author does a good job of not giving away how it will play out. The audience can bet strongly on their preference based on what they are inferring from the text and still run the risk of being completely wrong. Even when the obvious choices are made, you still don't know for certain that it will play out predictably or if it will be a setback/win.

The narrators were very good. I enjoyed their performances. I feel they brought the proper emotions and inflections needed for the story to progress and come alive for the reader/listener. I am always a bit apprehensive of stories with multiple narrators...but this one worked out well.

I finished this story yesterday. Before I give a review, I like to sit on a story for a day or two just to be sure how I feel doesn't change. Sometimes I finish a book and think it was the best thing ever only to wake up the next day and find all the holes in the plot and flaws in the characters. I still feel like this was a good story. Towards the end I did find myself actually yelling, "OMG JUST XXXXX" lol. But I do not regret getting this book. I do agree that it could have been shorter but I am not mad at the length of it.

Oh how I LOVED this story!!! It was just the right amount of all the things!

The story starts off with some unfortunate events which is somewhat standard in RomComs. What I appreciate is that the events are not dragged out. It happens and then its right into the meat of the story. Some of the things that happen are pretty predictable but not in an eye roll way. More like I bet xyz is gonna abc and you may be right! There is some good humor, deep conversations, and general happiness.

In true transparency, there were some conversations that happened that made me roll my eyes. They span between being irrational and unrealistic. However, that’s part of the RomCom formula as well so I don’t hold it against the story or the author.

It’s a nice ride with ups and downs and plenty of time in between. For me, it’s a feel good story with a bit of heavy hitting in life and steam. I enjoyed it. If you are easily offended by cursing/swearing, talk/descriptions of intercourse and all its moving parts, drinking etc…this may not be the book for you. But if you liked movies like 27 Dresses or The Ugly Truth, you will probably like this book.

I enjoy this author’s writing style and would be interested in hearing more from her 😊 The narrators were good EXCEPT for how they did Peyton’s voice…it was a bit cringy each time. I get he’s a baby boy, but maybe having a very grown man with a deep voice attempt to sound like a 2 year old wasn’t the best idea LOL.

DNF - BUT YOU MAY LIKE IT!!!

This story is not keeping me rapt…which is not to say that its not a good story. I have a little over an hour left and it has taken me the better part of a week to get to this point. Not because of the length of the book, but just the fact that I feel like I can leave off and pick up at whim. I actually listened to an entire other story in the middle of this book.

As others have said, I love the banter between Veronica and Stoker. Its funny and easy to imagine. But I am just not caught up in this story! Especially when it takes a turn…the BIG turn (this gives nothing away, I am referencing what may be called the climax of the story), I don’t know that I actually LIKE the direction in which the story is going. It feels very Sherlock Holmes-ish…the BBC airing with Benedict Cumberbatch but unnecessarily so ☹

At current, I am trying to decide if I want to finish or not. This is a wonderful story for many but I don’t know that I am the target audience for it. For me, I love everything up to the climax. Maybe that’s because its on too big of a scale for me?? I didn’t see the story going in that direction and maybe its just too much for me. Hence is why I say maybe I am not the target audience.

The writing style is good and thorough. Sounds like all the necessary research has been done. I enjoy the narrator…her voice is a bit high and loud for the part of Veronica but that doesn’t bother me at all…I like it. I think she has great inflections and does well creating different voices for each character. She does well at portraying the needed emotions.

Overall not a bad book. I won’t begrudge the author just because I don’t like the segue the story has taken in order to make the book a series. Its still very well written and entertaining.

I love the Forty Proof series for the most part. I am getting a bit annoyed with the constant addition of new characters but this is not what this review is about.

At its core, this story is VERY quick, VERY to the point. Its a decent story but its not a NECESSARY one. I don't mean that in a bad way...I mean you don't need to listen to this story in order to progress through the series. The amount of backstory this novella provides is very menial. How it ends is a cute tie in and its like ah ok that makes sense but its not something NECESSARY to the story. We, or maybe just I, could have never listened to this story and not missed the existence of this book. But, if you want a really quick jump into literally one night of Robert's life (that changed the rest of his life), this is a good one to listen to. Maybe on a short, hour long car ride.

What I absolutely didn't like was the narrator and that forced southern accent. I know for the time period we have been lead to be believe that a lot of southern men sounded like that, but goodness...NO. I feel like he shouted the entire book and the accent was just...grating. It was like someone trying way too hard. Sorry, sir. I just didn't like it. He sounded like a loud version of Big Daddy from Django.
