Historia
LRPs were all volunteers. They were in the spine-tingling, brain-twisting, nerve-wracking business of Long Range Patrolling. They varied in age from eighteen to thirty. These men operated in precision movements, like walking through a jungle quietly and being able to tell whether a man or an animal is moving through the brush without seeing the cause of movement. They could sit in an ambush for hours without moving a muscle except to ease the safety off the automatic weapon in their hand at the first sign of trouble. These men were good because they had to be to survive.

Historia
At a huge cost, the Red Army and the civilian population of Leningrad ultimately endured a bitter 900-day siege, struggling against constant bombing, shelling, and starvation. Throughout the siege, Soviet forces tried to break the German lines and restore contact with the garrison. To Besiege a City charts the first of these offensives which began in January 1942 and was followed by repeated assaults.

Historia
With more than half a million copies sold, Robert Mason's Chickenhawk is one of the best-selling books ever written about the Vietnam War. Fascinated with flying from a young age, Mason earned his private pilot's license even before graduating high school. He enlisted in the army in 1964 and endured an extremely challenging "weeding out" process in an effort to fly helicopters. Sent to Vietnam, he survived more than 1,000 air combat missions despite the violence and brutality exploding all around him.

A Best Book about Helicopter Aviation in Vietnam!
Revisado: 07-12-24
Robert Mason was an amazing helicopter combat pilot. The history he recounts lends a first person experience of a sobering nostalgia to a war where the average life expectancy of a helicopter pilot was four weeks in-country.
He honors all those who have gone down range. This is a must read for anyone interested in helicopter aviation during the Vietnam war.

Book Six Gets Back On Track
Revisado: 06-02-23
After reading the sometimes wandering and often loosely threaded together vignettes of book five I was reluctant to invest time in book six. But Jack Carr did not disappoint. He did another amazing job in line with the first four novels.
Perhaps Hollywood did not take up so much of his time last year?
Looking forward to book seven!!

Dan Pedersen is a great American
Revisado: 09-23-22
The evolution of the Top Gun academy is an important historical artifact and an interesting story. Dan Pedersen provides some extraordinary insights into the culture of naval aviation. However this book reads more like a philosophical treaty rather than a technical account of military aviation at war.
In fact, it more resembles a military recruitment presentation. Was that the author’s mission?

Hard to match the brilliance of his first four novels.
Revisado: 09-09-22
Obviously Mr. Carr has been devoting more time to his podcasts, television adaptations, and researching new ways to get freebies through his excessive product placement plugs. Disappointed to say that after four of the absolute best and brilliant authored military adventure fiction novels Mr. Carr has fed us a novel featuring mostly reiterations of his past novels, and repeating historical and rhetorical filler in the place of thrilling adventure.
Too many plot complications, not tied together as in his past novels.

Punk’s War reveals the inner workings of the US Navy as only an insider can. An authentic and riveting thriller, it is a highly acclaimed novel of a fighter pilot’s experience in the era just before 9/11. As the US military enters another postconflict period, the themes of leadership during crisis and accomplishing the mission make Punk’s War more relevant than ever.

Ward Carroll is an excellent story teller.
He walks the reader through an intimate and often exiting portrayal of life as a Tomcat pilot onboard an aircraft carrier.
Ninety percent of my reading is non-fiction.
But once in a while I discover a novel that rings true to my practical and emotional sensibilities.
I am looking forward to the next book in this trilogy.

Historia
In 1942, America's deadliest fighter pilot, or "ace of aces" - the legendary Eddie Rickenbacker - offered a bottle of bourbon to the first US fighter pilot to break his record of 26 enemy planes shot down. Seizing on the challenge to motivate his men, General George Kenney promoted what they would come to call the "race of aces" as a way of boosting the spirits of his war-weary command.

Unique perspectives woven together loosely.
Revisado: 04-10-22
There is much good and comparative information presented about people, places, events. The narrator is very good.
The story does wander at times.
The author is short on certain details pertinent to the event, character, or situation that would give the reader an in-depth understanding of what is happening. For example the title of the book is “Race of Aces”, however the author does not keep a running tally of each pilot’s score. I consider myself a student of military history and this story is somewhat short on detail and heavy on prose.
But overall an interesting read.
