Beautiful love story, but repetitive and too long
Revisado: 07-10-16
From the very beginning I was hooked on the love story between the two main characters, Ifemelu and Obinze. Furthermore, I found the commentary on race and immigration issues thought-provoking and powerful. Many of the nuances mentioned I had never considered and I am still thinking about. That said, it got repetitive, exhausting, and lost the impact as it felt like it was almost "drilled" throughout.
As for the narrator, I loved her performance of Ifemelu and the Nigerian characters in the book, but the other characters (especially the imitation of the American accent) was irritating.

Historia
The irascible A. J. Fikry, owner of Island Books - the only bookstore on Alice Island - has already lost his wife. Now his most prized possession, a rare book, has been stolen from right under his nose in the most embarrassing of circumstances. The store itself, it seems, will be next to go. One night upon closing, he discovers a toddler in his children’s section with a note from her mother pinned to her Elmo doll: I want Maya to grow up in a place with books and among people who care about such kinds of things. I love her very much, but I can no longer take care of her.

Great book, lovable characters
Revisado: 06-23-16
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It was sad at times, but also sweet and heartwarming. It is one of my favorite reads of 2016 so far (of about 25).

Anthony Marra transports us to a snow-covered village in Chechnya, where eight-year-old Havaa watches from the woods as Russian soldiers abduct her father in the middle of the night, accusing him of aiding Chechen rebels. Across the road their lifelong neighbor and family friend Akhmed has also been watching, fearing the worst when the soldiers set fire to Havaa’s house. But when he finds her hiding in the forest with a strange blue suitcase, he makes a decision that will forever change their lives. He will seek refuge at the abandoned hospital where the sole remaining doctor, Sonja Rabina, treats the wounded.

Not one of my favorites
Revisado: 06-23-16
I felt intimidated by this novel because I did not know anything at all about Chechnya or the wars and the title seemed science fiction-y to me (it’s not at all). The characters are well developed and I enjoyed the story, but I found the amount of connection he tried to make with totally random people / events overwhelming and unnecessary. The horrors of modern day war and a lawless, war torn country came alive in through his descriptive writing, but I had a hard time following the timeline because it used both flashbacks and flash forwards to tell the story.

Historia
A brilliant literary debut, inspired by a true story: the final days of a young woman accused of murder in Iceland in 1829. Set against Iceland's stark landscape, Hannah Kent brings to vivid life the story of Agnes, who, charged with the brutal murder of her former master, is sent to an isolated farm to await execution. Horrified at the prospect of housing a convicted murderer, the family at first avoids Agnes. Only Tóti, a priest Agnes has mysteriously chosen to be her spiritual guardian, seeks to understand her.

One of my best listens of 2016
Revisado: 06-23-16
This is one of my absolute favorite listens of 2016 (of about 25 so far). Unique story and compelling characters. After reading the author's notes, I was fascinated to learn the book was based on a true story and years of research. The theme of grace is powerful and haunting.

Historia
In the opening pages of Jamie Ford's stunning debut, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, Henry Lee comes upon a crowd gathered outside the Panama Hotel, once the gateway to Seattle's Japantown. It has been boarded up for decades, but now the new owner has made an incredible discovery: the belongings of Japanese families, left when they were rounded up and sent to internment camps during World War II. As Henry looks on, the owner opens a Japanese parasol.

Sweet story, but a little far fetched for me
Revisado: 06-23-16
I thought this was a sweet love story and a very enjoyable read. I only gave it three stars for "story" because some parts seemed a little too far fetched for my taste, but overall I really did love the book.

Great story!
Revisado: 06-23-16
I loved the cultural aspects of this book. Learning about China and the culture / history of the food there was very interesting. The story is uplifting, but not overly sweet as there are themes of grief, death and loss. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire read and I didn't want to it end!

Beautiful, gut- wrenching journey
Revisado: 06-23-16
This was the most intense book I've ever read, but so beautiful. I found myself smiling out of genuine happiness one minute and then sobbing the next. I did not want to put it down, but at certain points I had to take breaks and do something to get my mind off of it for a while. It was extremely graphic and contained many detailed scenes with abuse and self harm. I was heartbroken by the characters and so many of the story lines, but I am so glad I've read it.

Fascinating insights into friendship
Revisado: 06-23-16
My favorite part of the book was the commentary on friendship. I loved the competition between Elena and Lila and the way it shaped their lives. Both of their characters are so well developed. Overall, the story was not all that exciting, but the characters were so compelling that it was a great listen.

Promising beginning, fizzled out at the end
Revisado: 06-23-16
I was so excited about this book since Orphan Train is one of my all time favorites. I was hooked at the beginning, but by the end I just wanted it to be over so I could know what happened and move on to another great read. I didn't find any of the characters lovable and the ending was predictable.
