From a Dark Place
Revisado: 01-26-24
This writer has an imagination that revela in a dark place. The world is an interesting concept unbalanced by crass humor, and at times startling brutality. Even from the first chapter the listener should be forewarned there is very mature situations pretty much immediately. The performance of this book is well done, both in it's acting and production quality.
If dark fiction is your thing, with a LitRPG bent and "God as a weak class" is a thing for you, you may have found your new book.

Desperately Needs an Update
Revisado: 12-26-23
The information in this audio book is so out of date it's just not useful as a travel guide any longer. It still quotes phone numbers and talks about pay phones. Seriously. The island and the things on it have changed dramatically with COVID, inflation, the hawaii travel authority's travel management plan, etc.
The narrator is fine - although reciting websites and phone numbers can be monotonous. Don't spend time on this, Do not recommend.

Love the Story, Cringey Coarseness
Revisado: 11-19-22
I really enjoyed the narration which brought the book to life with only a rare inflection mistake. the underlying world is compelling and funny but as sometimes happens the coarse jesting can be grating. if they dialed it back just a notch, this would be a rollicking fun adventure!

I hope, for your sake, that you have not chosen to listen to this recording because you are in the mood for a pleasant experience. If this is the case, I advise you to put down this audio instantaneously, because of all the audios describing the unhappy lives of the Baudelaire orphans, The Miserable Mill might be the unhappiest yet.

Lemony Snicket needs a Reader
Revisado: 10-15-21
Lemony Snicket has taken over the voice duties after the first couple books and sadly to awful effect. It's quirky and not in a good way as atonal music is added before, mid-way and at the end which the kids urge to skip past. His narration is all over the place, its clear there was little to no editing. The actual performance is .... interesting but so odd and difficult to listen to.
There is a great story here, which my kids really liked, but this is one of those cases where having someone else read it rather than the author putting their personal narrative in would have made a HUGE difference.
I think my family would enjoy it were this series to be re-recorded so the later books were either Tim Curry or even just a another professional voice actor.

Historia
Late on a spring night in 1920, five boys cross the Yorkshire dales to the ruins of Fountains Abbey, intent on raising the Devil. Instead, they stumble over the Devil himself, sitting there watching them. Terrified, they run for their lives, leaving behind a book on alchemy stolen from their schoolmaster. The next morning, a body is discovered in the cloisters of the abbey--a man swathed in a hooded cloak and wearing a gas mask.

Another Excellent Entry
Revisado: 10-09-21
Well read and a fantastic storyline. At some point you want to see Rutledge catch a break with his bosses but that's the thing... the characters are so we'll developed that you find yourself invested. This series is a master work.

Historia
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

A great book
Revisado: 05-14-21
There are a lot of recent negative reviews, and I have to guess that they come from people who either havent listened for long or have little experience with the side of society that protects the rest of us. While the dialog is sometimes crass with simple jokes - anyone with military exposure will tell you.... it is often authentic.
This is a book with a good scifi plot and characters that aren't perfect, often simple, and have to deal with an imperfect reality. If you want "hero" scifi with pilots and such - this is not that. This is the story of a grunt. An infantryman who thinks in tactical situations. A space grunt. In a universe where humans aren't the apex species and don't have the best tech.
Its got a compelling plot, and the voicing by RC Bray is mostly excellent, with occassions where accepts blend between characters, but overall a great delivery of a really good book.

Damaging - Steer Clear
Revisado: 06-30-20
What started as a great primer to help people has been so poorly written and callously narrated that it is likely to do more to cause the listener pain and guilt than to help them change behavior. The book is not factually wrong, its simply not well suited to narration in the format by someone who reads about depression, anxiety, and poor defensive behaviors like its your shopping list.

Historia
A week ago, 17-year-old Lela Santos’ best friend, Nadia, killed herself. Today, thanks to a farewell ritual gone awry, Lela is standing in paradise, looking upon a vast gated city in the distance - hell. No one willingly walks through the Suicide Gates, into a place smothered in darkness and infested with depraved creatures. But Lela isn’t just anyone - she’s determined to save her best friend’s soul, even if it means sacrificing her eternal afterlife. As Lela struggles to find Nadia, she’s captured by the Guards, enormous, not-quite-human creatures that patrol the dark city’s endless streets.

This Passes as YA?
Revisado: 12-28-18
the narration of the audiobook sounds like it was read by an annoying high school girl stereotype. for half the adults in the YA target demographic, it will be grating. For younger teenage listeners, they should be steered away from the series as profanity, sexual assault, foster system abuse, and drug use all feature within the first minutes of the story, let alone the rest of the narrative.
The world the author creates is compelling but is related with such a vulgar cast that it slows the plot rather than enhancing it.

From a time in calvary albequerque that they did live streaming. These are then unedited so there are a lot of church activities discussed that have less import for remote listeners. This series needs another edit pass.
