More of the popcorn-munching goodness you expect of these books.
There is a short section where the editor didn't remove a few takes of a single line from the text, but I honestly didn't mind it.

A good listen, but don't think too hard.

A good voice performance holds together the pulpy plot. This is a book to be enjoyed in the moment, not one in which you attempt to guess whodunnit before the big reveal.

Sophie Hannah's inaugural installment in the Hercule Poirot series is a solid effort to capture familiar elements of Agatha Christie's favorite devices- he Poirot is dignified, compassionate, and ebullient, and Julian Rhind-Tutt delivers his polished phrases to a marvel.
Readers of Christie will also feel at home in the tortuous plot, as bodies drop in the third act, Poirot plays matchmaker at least once, and chance phrases delivered by an oblivious Englishman drop inspiration on Poirot's head.
However, this oblivious Englishman is by far my least favorite part of the book. Poirot has had a number of Faithful Stooges throughout his career, ranging from the practical Nurse Letherin, to love-struck but resourceful Colin Lamb, all the way to the Archetypal Englishman himself, Captain Hastings. Inspector Catchpool, the narrator of the story, draws most from the well of Hastings, but in an effort to make an interestingly-flawed narrator, Sophie Hannah has created a profoundly irritating character. I could forgive Catchpool's many failings throughout the novel- his social cowardice, peevishness, and aversion to all things morbid- if it weren't for the fact that he is supposed to be a Scotland Yard Inspector.
Instead of a Japp or a Hastings, I get the impression that someone had slapped a badge on James Bentley, and put him in charge of a murder investigation. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the hopeful knowledge that we've seen the last of inspector catchpool.

The Hollow is given a robust performance by Poirot veteran Hugh Fraser, and his range of tones and voices are very well expressed with a good pacing. I have no complaints on this end.
However, I would like to caution a prospective buyer that Sir Fraser brings perhaps a little too much life to the characters in this particular book. If characters deeply entrenched in co-dependency, egomania, submission and condescension interest you, you will probably not find a better gallery of them. However, I found a majority of the characters in the book insufferable, and found myself hoping that the business might resolve in the spirit of "And Then There Were None." I was frankly disappointed by the number of the cast who still drew breath by denouement.
So, if deeply flawed characters are something you can endure, this book is worth enjoying. If you could see yourself get irritated by terrible and pathetic people, there are plenty of other offerings featuring Ms. Christie and Sir Fraser that would suit you better.
