Historia
First published in 1843, it tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, a mean and unpleasant man who dislikes people generally and Christmas especially. One Christmas Eve he is visited by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come and given a glimpse of the many homes and lives which Scrooge has touched in his wretched life to date. After their visits, Scrooge is transformed into a kinder, gentler man.

Claire Dederer is a happily married mother of two, ages nine and 12, when she suddenly finds herself totally despondent and, simultaneously, suffering through a kind of erotic reawakening. This exuberant memoir shifts between her present experience as a middle-aged mom in the grip of mysterious new hungers and herself as a teenager - when she last experienced life with such heightened sensitivity and longing.

The Pod Save America guys accept where we are, but aren’t content to leave us here…..
Revisado: 06-26-24
This is a pep talk for democracy. I feel like these guys are my spiritual brothers. They offer some practical advice for participating in this grand American experiment with humor and they make me feel better. I’m really glad they’re doing this work. They’re encouraging while letting us all know there’s work to do. We can all help in some way to improve our government and be responsible to each other. They still believe it and so do I.

Historia
Eleanor Dross knows a thing or two about the end of the world, thanks to a survivalist grandfather who stockpiles freeze-dried food and supplies - just in case. So when she reads about a Harvard scientist's prediction that an asteroid will strike Earth in April, Eleanor knows her family will be prepared. Her classmates? They're on their own! Eleanor has just one friend she wants to keep safe: Mack. They've been best friends since kindergarten, even though he's more of a smiley emoji and she's more of an eye-roll emoji.

Historia
Timothy McVeigh wanted to start a movement. Speaking to his lawyers days after the Oklahoma City bombing, the Gulf War veteran expressed no regrets: killing 168 people was his patriotic duty. New York Times bestselling author Jeffrey Toobin traces the dramatic history and profound legacy of Timothy McVeigh, who once declared, “I believe there is an army out there, ready to rise up, even though I never found it.” But that doesn’t mean his army wasn’t there. With news-breaking reportage, Toobin details how McVeigh’s principles and tactics have flourished in the decades since his death in 2001.

Will this book help stop the growth of extremism?
Revisado: 09-21-23
I hope so. Connecting the dots is a good start. There are so many ways people get drawn into these groups or come to adopt extremist ideas—I feel like there needs to be more public effort to counter the narratives that suck people into extremism. We need to be familiar with the origin stories of our homegrown extremists to have a chance at keeping their numbers down. We must take seriously the job of talking people down from divisive rhetoric, actions, and beliefs and doing more to make it harder for people to be convinced that they’re living in a Hellscape that needs to be changed through violence against their fellow countrymen.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

This book captured me.
Revisado: 01-23-10
The story follows real people through terrible circumstances in 1930's America. Diaries and newspapers shape the story. Before I finished the book, I could imagine being there --but knew that really being there would be much more than I could imagine. Still, this is the best and most interesting rendition of the time that I've read, and I think it helped me to better understand why things have unfolded in our country as they have. Books like these make history so much more appealing than textbooks. If you liked "Isaac's Storm" or "The Devil in the White City" by Erik Larson, you will like this book by Timothy Egan too.
