Historia
With each sensational chapter, A Dangerous Woman documents the life of Florence Gould, a fabulously wealthy socialite and patron of the arts, who hid her dark past as a Nazi collaborator in 1940s Paris. Born in turn-of-the-century San Francisco to French parents, Florence moved to Paris, aged 11. Believing that only money brought respectability and happiness, she became the third wife of Frank Jay Gould, son of the railway millionaire Jay Gould.

fascinating story of self invention
Revisado: 04-10-22
because the audible reviews of this book were mediocre, i delayed purchasing it several years although it was in my wish list.
ultimately, i found it to be a highly interesting biography of an arguably unsympathetic socialite and her inheritor husband and a good argument for estate taxes. the historical context of the first half of 20th century France as viewed from the perch of high society shed new insight on the life of the ultra wealthy between and during the wars. what drew me to the subject in the first place was the legendary jewelry collection of florence gould and how she snared her man and her fortune. while the book doesn't dwell much on her jewelry, it does not disappoint. the narration (with the exception of a few minor mispronunciations) is excellent also.

The Other End of the Leash shares a revolutionary new perspective on our relationship with dogs, focusing on our behavior in comparison with that of dogs. An applied animal behaviorist and dog trainer with more than 20 years of experience, Dr. Patricia McConnell looks at humans as just another interesting species, and muses about why we behave the way we do around our dogs, how dogs might interpret our behavior, and how to interact with our dogs in ways that bring out the best in them.

EXCELLENT TIPS ON UNDERSTANDING HOW OUR DOGS THINK AND REACT TO OFTEN CONFUSING HUMAN COMMUNICATION. I LISTENED TO IT TWICE AND LOVED THE BOOK. THE AUTHOR PROVIDES THOUGHTFUL INSIGHTS FOR ACHIEVING BENEVOLENT AND HUMANE RAPPORT CONCERNING THE REMARKABLE RELATIONSHIP OF THE TWO CO-DEPENDENT SPECIES.

BOGGED DOWN WITH REPETITIVE DETAIL
Revisado: 04-24-21
IN THIS LENGTHY TREATISE, THE AUTHOR SUCCEEDS BRILLIANTLY IN BEATING A DEAD HORSE OVER 20 HOURS. BORING THE READER THROUGH REPETITIVE AND IRRELEVANT HEARSAY ABOUT THE TALENTED AND BEAUTIFUL NATALIE WOOD, THE BOOK WAS EASILY 2 OR 3 TIMES AS LONG AS IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN. THE AUTHOR ALSO ATTEMPTS TO BLAME NATALIE'S TRAGIC DEATH ON HER HUSBAND ROBERT WAGNER.

In The Browns of California, journalist and scholar Miriam Pawel weaves a narrative history that spans four generations, from August Schuckman, the Prussian immigrant who crossed the Plains in 1852 and settled on a northern California ranch, to his great-grandson Jerry Brown, who reclaimed the family homestead 140 years later. Through the prism of their lives, we gain an essential understanding of California and an appreciation of its importance.

really dry, bogged down with uninteresting detail
Revisado: 04-08-21
i had hoped it would explore more of the history of california during the quarter century that the Browns were governors. it did to some extent, but i came away from it unfulfilled. i consider that the oddest thing was that jerry brown was governor when i was in college and also when became eligible for medicare!
narration could have been a lot better.

From Pasadena to Cambridge to New York, Washington, D.C., India, Ceylon, Paris, Marseilles, Santa Barbara, and Maine, Bob Spitz re-creates an extraordinary life. He takes us beyond the image of Julia as the tall, eccentric woman with a funny voice who taught America how to cook, to establish her as a genuine rebel and beloved icon, a woman who redefined herself in middle age, helped to change the role of women in America, set the standard for how to create a public personality in the modern media world.

a bit long but endearing
Revisado: 07-27-20
the book was very long and went into a bit too much detail, however it is worth sticking with to understand the personality and humor of this iconoclastic woman. born into wealth and privilege, Julia Child led a fascinating life, having worked for the US foreign office in world war two in risky postings in ceylon and china. lacking direction in her life, she married a colleague and began the adventure as the wife of a foreign service officer which took her to France, Germany and Norway. in France she studied French cooking to which she dedicated her life. she was an early pioneer of educational television and a natural at it. she never accepted endorsements and did what she wanted on the television sometimes in disregard of popular norms or censors. one of the most interesting things about the book was the author's citing instances of her humor, which have long been forgotten by the viewer of her shows so many years ago. one ends up loving and admiring the woman for her courage and work ethic.

FULL OF IRRELEVANT HEARSAY AND TRIVIA
Revisado: 01-04-20
WHILE I AM INTERESTED IN HISTORY OF POPULAR MUSICIANS, THIS BOOK IS CHOCK FULL OF MEANINGLESS, BORING AND REPETITIVE DETAIL. IT ENDS WHEN ELVIS IS DRAFTED, LEAVING THE SECOND HALF OF HIS CAREER UNTOUCHED. THE BEST THING ABOUT IT WAS THE NARRATOR. I WOULD NOT HAVE PURCHASED THIS BOOK EXCEPT FOR IT WAS ON A TWO FOR ONE AUDIBLE SALE.

The result of this Roger Daltrey's introspection is a remarkable memoir, instantly captivating, funny and frank, chock-full of well-earned wisdom and one-of-kind anecdotes from a raucous life that spans a tumultuous time of change in Britain and America. Born during the air bombing of London in 1944, Daltrey fought his way (literally) through school and poverty and began to assemble the band that would become The Who while working at a sheet metal factory in 1961.

DALTRY LIVED HIS LIFE TO THE FULLEST AND HAS PUT AS MUCH FORMIDABLE ENERGY INTO THE TELLING OF HIS STORY AS HE PUT INTO HIS ENERGETIC SINGING PERFORMANCES!

Historia
Poppy tears, opium, heroin, fentanyl: humankind has been in thrall to the ‘Milk of Paradise’ for millennia. The latex of papaver somniferum is a bringer of sleep, of pleasurable lethargy, of relief from pain - and hugely addictive. A commodity without rival, it is renewable, easy to extract, transport and refine, and subject to an insatiable global demand. No other substance in the world is as simple to produce or as profitable. It is the basis of a gargantuan industry built upon a shady underworld, but ultimately it is a farm-gate material that lives many lives ....

I found the book well researched and informative. While the narrator was very good, my only complaint was that her English accent was a bit hard to understand. However, I highly recommend the book.

Historia
Every Day Is Extra is Kerry’s passionate, insightful, sometimes funny, always moving account of his life. Kerry tells wonderful stories about colleagues Ted Kennedy and John McCain, as well as President Obama and other major figures. He writes movingly of recovering his faith while in the Senate, and deplores the hyper-partisanship that has infected Washington. Few books convey as convincingly as this one the life of public service like that which John Kerry has lived for 50 years.

Diary of professional politician of privilege
Revisado: 02-20-19
Having soldiered through half the book, Mr. Kerry pads his verbose memoir with banal extraneous information: does any one really care whether his kids and those of his vice presidential running mate got along well? Likewise, some of his exploits in Viet Nam were repetative. The author mentions early on that his family was not wealthy: never mind that his paternal grand parents had enough money to travel annually to Europe in the 1920s and even after the 1928 crash and his grandpa's suicide, his grand mother had money to live comfortably in the manner to which she was accustomed for the rest of her life, (albeit with the sacrifice of the annual voyage to Europe). Mr. Kerry's maternal grand parents lived as ex-patriots in England and France between the World Wars and had money to purchase, build and maintain a family vacation home on the coastal cliffs of Brittany with beautiful views. His family still maintains the home, re-constructed after the Germans destroyed it in WW2. Mr.Kerry attended exclusive New England private prep schools and Yale. In comparison to his present wealth, (he is married to billionaire heiress Theresa Heinz), his view that his family was not wealthy might be understandable. However, the book paints a picture of a son of privilege converting to knee-jerk Kennedy liberalism representing the average American in the pursuit of professional political power. Having attained the position of Secretary of State, he was highly successful in his endeavors.
