Mo Yan and Lu Xun pieces were great
Revisado: 02-21-23
I really enjoyed the Mo Yan and Lu Xun podcasts. I thought they added great context to some complicated works of modern Chinese literature. The two narrators are clearly in their element and having fun, but are also incredibly knowledgeable about the subject. I am.looking forward to digging deeper into these podcasts

Historia
The Alabama Communist Party was made up of working people without a Euro-American radical political tradition: devoutly religious and semiliterate Black laborers and sharecroppers, and a handful of Whites, including unemployed industrial workers, housewives, youth, and renegade liberals. In this book, Robin D. G. Kelley reveals how the experiences and identities of these people from Alabama's farms, factories, mines, kitchens, and city streets shaped the Party's tactics and unique political culture.

Historia
Set in the wake of the Mau Mau rebellion and on the cusp of Kenya's independence from Britain, A Grain of Wheat follows a group of villagers whose lives have been transformed by the 1952-1960 Emergency. At the center of it all is the reticent Mugo, the village's chosen hero and a man haunted by a terrible secret. As we learn of the villagers' tangled histories in a narrative interwoven with myth and peppered with allusions to real-life leaders, including Jomo Kenyatta, a masterly story unfolds in which compromises are forced, friendships are betrayed, and loves are tested.

A stirring story
Revisado: 08-13-21
I enjoyed this book the first time I read it years ago, and I found it just as riveting years later. A powerful story of Kenyan independence and the anti-colonial struggle, but also how devastating colonialism was to the African people. Ngugi should've already won the Nobel Prize for the bodybof his work. Maybe one day.

Historia
Once described by Mao Zedong as a "needle inside a ball of cotton", Deng was the pragmatic yet disciplined driving force behind China's radical transformation in the late 20th century. He confronted the damage wrought by the Cultural Revolution, dissolved Mao's cult of personality, and loosened the policies that had stunted China's growth. Obsessed with modernization, Deng opened trade relations with the West, which lifted hundreds of millions out of poverty. Yet he also answered to his authoritarian roots, most notably when he ordered the crackdown in 1989 at Tiananmen Square.

Fun Story and Cautionary Tale
Revisado: 05-20-21
For those who like the 1920's, this book was a fun ride with the major figures of the literati. It is also a tale of excess that becomes clear in the last chapters. A good read for fans of these authors.

Historia
A Pure Solar World: Sun Ra and the Birth of Afrofuturism offers a spirited introduction to the life and work of this legendary but underappreciated musician, composer, and poet. Paul Youngquist explores and assesses Sun Ra’s wide-ranging creative output - music, public preaching, graphic design, film and stage performance, and poetry - and connects his diverse undertakings to the culture and politics of his times, including the space race, the rise of technocracy, the civil rights movement, and even space-age bachelor-pad music.

Loved this book. A great story of one of Jazz's most enigmatic figures. After this book, I feel I have a closer connection to Sun Ra and haven't stopped listening to his music since. Fantastic read and great narration.

Historia
When it comes to expressing the pleasure and pain of being just a touch too smart to be happy, Dorothy Parker is still the champion. Along with Robert Benchley, Alexander Woollcott, and the rest of the Algonquin Round Table, she dominated American popular literature in the 1920s and 1930s. This collection of more than 30 short stories and poems is essential for any Parker fan and an excellent way for new listeners to make the acquaintance of one of the 20th century's most quotable authors.

My fave
Revisado: 03-03-20
My grandmother first introduced me to Dorothy Parker through her poetry, and I'm forever grateful. A great collection of her work. Love thevbiography at the beginning, and love that a small royalty check still goes to the NAACP. Love Dorthy Parker.

Historia
Greg Donahue’s The Minuteman, tells the story of one of Newark’s native sons; ex-prizefighter and longtime Zwillman enforcer Sidney Abramowitz, a.k.a. Nat Arno, who took over leadership of the Minutemen in 1934 and made it his personal business to put an end to what he saw as the Bund’s “anti-American” activities. For six years, Arno and his crew of vigilantes battled Newark’s Nazis at every turn. The Minuteman is a story of the ethics of violence in the face of fascism; a forgotten legacy that is as relevant now as it was nearly a hundred years ago.

in a time of rising anti-Semitism, this story is a great reminder that people should fight back against hatred. these men were Heroes, and it's good to hear them getting long overdue credit for fighting the Nazis, especially the ones that were living right here.

I did not know what to expect when I chose this performance, but I thought it was incredible. The story of Scott Joplin and blind man Boone was so fascinating. Not to mention the Opera at the end. This was a fantastic choice, and I will listen to it again and again.

Historia
As a young man, Frederick Douglass (1818-1895) escaped from slavery in Baltimore, Maryland. He was fortunate to have been taught to read by his slave owner mistress, and he would go on to become one of the major literary figures of his time. He wrote three versions of his autobiography over the course of his lifetime and published his own newspaper. His very existence gave the lie to slave owners: with dignity and great intelligence, he bore witness to the brutality of slavery.
