A truly beautiful story!
Revisado: 06-22-24
I treasure every occasion when I happen upon a book this good. The accusations of cultural appropriation are nonsense - they would deny the very things we need to cultivate, namely the imagination, curiosity and empathy to understand and appreciate anyone from another culture. This book is a wonderful example of those very qualities that illuminate our shared humanity rather than our differences.

Historia
It's 1991. Near Checkpoint Zulu, 100 miles from the Kuwaiti border, Thomas Benton meets Arwood Hobbes. Benton is a British journalist who reports from war zones in part to avoid his lackluster marriage and a daughter he loves but cannot connect with; Arwood is a Midwestern American private who might be an insufferable ignoramus or might be a genuine lunatic with a death wish - it's hard to tell.

An absolute must-read!
Revisado: 01-16-20
Derek is absolutely masterful at capturing war and strife from the broadest possible big picture, down to the most excruciatingly intimate details - and manages to leaven it all with just the right touches of humor. I could simply not put this one down!

She'd heard the stories, seen the movies, read the books. But now police Chief Inspector Sigrid Ødegård has to leave her native Norway and actually go there - to that land across the Atlantic where her missing brother is implicated in the mysterious death of a prominent African-American academic. America. Sigrid is plunged into a United States where race and identity, politics and promise, reverberate in every aspect of daily life.

Of yes, I HAVE enjoyed this program!
Revisado: 01-14-20
It's such a joy to find a new favorite author - both this book and 'Norwegian by Night' were wonderful reads. Observant, astute, philosophical, insightful - and with fantastic characters and a liberal dose of laugh-out-loud humor! I could easily spend HUNDREDS of hours with both Sheldon and Sigrid. I sincerely hope more books are in the works!

In the lawless, drought-ridden lands of the Arizona Territory in 1893, two extraordinary lives unfold. Hypnotic and beautiful
Revisado: 12-29-19
Tea captures the bleak and haunting lives of her characters, and the desolate majesty of their landscapes in a style reminiscent of Cormac McCarthy. Beneath the seemingly stagnant surface of their hard lives there runs a turbulent current of changing times and tragedy. This book was absolutely mesmerizing!

A boy and a girl who fall in love. Two families whose hopes collide with destiny. An extraordinary novel that offers a resonant new definition of what it means to be American. Arturo and Alma Rivera have lived their whole lives in Mexico. One day, their beautiful fifteen-year-old daughter, Maribel, sustains a terrible injury, one that casts doubt on whether she’ll ever be the same. And so, leaving all they have behind, the Riveras come to America with a single dream: that in this country of great opportunity and resources, Maribel can get better.

Revisado: 11-15-19
This is a beautifully written reminder of the hopes and dreams we ALL share, at least when not blinded by hatred. Both powerful and touching, and exquisitely presented by the whole cast of narrators, it's impossible to put down.

Historia
The world is Rita Khoury’s oyster. The bright and driven daughter of a Boston-area Irish Arab family that has risen over the generations from poor immigrants to part of the coastal elite, Rita grows up in a 1980s cultural mishmash. Corned beef and cabbage sit on the dinner table alongside stuffed grape leaves and tabouleh, all cooked by Rita’s mother, an Irish nurse who met her Lebanese surgeon husband while working at a hospital together. The unconventional yet close-knit family bonds over summers at the beach, wedding line dances, and a shared obsession with the Red Sox.

Outrageously good!
Revisado: 11-10-19
This book should be required reading for the policy makers who smugly plunge us into wars, oblivious to the toll on everyone directly involved. It's a crash course in empathy and understanding, beautifully written and narrated.

Historia
The Overstory unfolds in concentric rings of interlocking fable that range from antebellum New York to the late 20th-century Timber Wars of the Pacific Northwest and beyond. An air force loadmaster in the Vietnam War is shot out of the sky, then saved by falling into a banyan. An artist inherits 100 years of photographic portraits, all of the same doomed American chestnut. A hard-partying undergraduate in the late 1980s electrocutes herself, dies, and is sent back into life by creatures of air and light.

Magnificent!
Revisado: 10-29-19
Beautifully written and narrated, this is a tour de force of our relationship with our amazing planet. As the lives of the various characters are gradually interwoven, their stories being forth a deluge of fascinating information about the natural world. Lush descriptions, brilliant metaphors, and some seriously potent observations of humanity at its worst - and occasionally, at its best. A wonderful read, and not a minute too long!

It starts as a prank - a way to blow off steam after a long summer at Camp Horseshoe. Among the teen counselors, tensions and hormones are running high. No wonder the others agree when Jo-Beth Chancellor suggests they scare Monica O'Neal a little.... or a lot. Monica has it coming, and no one will really get hurt. What could go wrong? Everything.

Painful!
Revisado: 10-21-19
Normally, I only write comments on books I like, adhering to the dictate "if you don't have anything good to say..." . However, this one is such a screaming turkey, I couldn't resist. There is not one likable or sympathetic character, in either their teen or adult versions. By the time they were all introduced, I found myself wishing someone had murdered ALL of them. You could get through this tedious slog more easily if you took a drink every time the word 'bitch' was used. Honestly, it was like being stranded at a very long, boring party with a group of insipid, superficial mean girls and their overheated boyfriends. The best line of the entire thing was "Audible hopes you have enjoyed this program".

Historia
Likened to the works of Faulkner and Dickens when it was first published 20 years ago, this extraordinarily accomplished debut novel is a brilliantly plotted story of forbidden love and piercing political drama, centered on the tragic decline of an Indian family in the state of Kerala, on the southernmost tip of India. Armed only with the invincible innocence of children, the twins Rahel and Esthappen fashion a childhood for themselves in the shade of the wreck that is their family.

Mesmerizing...
Revisado: 08-25-19
The depictions of both characters and places are as rich and vivid as a virtual reality tour. The author's gorgeous writing skillfully captures the social climate, with its undercurrent of unease that builds toward tragedy, and the narrator gives it a beautiful voice. Absolutely stunning!

Wonderful!
Revisado: 08-22-19
This is a must-read for anyone who loves our fellow travelers on this planet, but even more importantly for those who still maintain that only humans matter. Carl's observations and the eloquent telling of them are by turns awe inspiring and heartbreaking, and so absolutely crucial for everyone to hear before it is too late.
