Historia
Starfleet was everything for Cristóbal Rios…until one horrible, inexplicable day when it all went wrong. Aimless and adrift, he grasps at a chance for a future as an independent freighter captain in an area betrayed by the Federation, the border region with the former Romulan Empire. His greatest desire: to be left alone. But solitude isn’t in the cards for the captain of La Sirena, who falls into debt to a roving gang of hoodlums from a planet whose society is based on Prohibition-era Earth.

Not very creative. Lots of fiction, less science
Revisado: 12-26-24
A story about crooks, gangsters, swindlers and dealing with one's past. Long story that took forever to get SciFi interesting. There were nice references to other ST timelines but almost no backstory (development) of main character. Overall "Meh!"

Much detail with not enough reflection
Revisado: 01-15-24
This may be the first memoir that I've ever read. I was initially surprised by the level of detail that at times seemed tedious. But Sir Patrick has led a very full and dynamic life fueled by his passion for acting. He shares his journey of discovery through the stage acting theater to the new frontiers of science fiction TV. I enjoyed his personal reflections: the humility he displayed of his own career and the admiration he showed to his fellow actors. As an American I was drawn to this book in order to learn more about the man who portrayed Jean Luc Picard. In his comments regarding the movie series, I felt that he didn't recognize the talent of the costars to the degree of which he spoke about the members of the RSC. Case in point. My personal favorite SG TNG movie is Insurrection. Sir Patrick didn't elaborate as to why he didn't enjoy making the movie. However he didn't recognize (at all) the excellent performances of Donna Murphy and F. Murray Abraham. This was an abberation from the rest of the book. I also hoped that he'd offer some reflections on how he evolved to love both stage acting and TV and how both arenas influenced the other during the second half of the 20th century. At the end I felt that, although his TV/Movie characters gave him international recognition, his first love has always been stage acting. I respect that.

A workbook for healthy body and mind
Revisado: 08-28-23
I really like the premise of upgrading our medical practice with the current information which was presented in a nicely organized manner. I found the section on exercise and nutrition to be quite intense. I thought: "wow I'm amazed that the author has the fortitude to maintain this practice". Then the final section discussed the "chinks" in this armor of fortitude. This is the toughest section of self care - the mental section. Finally, on a personal note, I found the analogy of "race car driving" to be quite esoteric. I too have a racing simulator. Most people I tell about itdon't understand why I find it so challenging. It too is a mental discipline as much as a physical one. Thank you for this excellent workbook on life. I'm sharing it with all the people I care about.

Not typical Star Trek tense excitement
Revisado: 01-28-23
The premise of this story was quite interesting but the level of conflict - including battles - was not exciting, unpredictable. It's unclear me how a planet can appear and disappear without upsetting the regional laws of physics.

Historia
Joni Mitchell is a cultural touchstone for generations of Americans. In her heyday she released 10 experimental, challenging, and revealing albums; her lyrics captivated people with the beauty of their language and the rawness of their emotions, both deeply personal to Mitchell and universally relatable to her audience. In this intimate biography, composed of dozens of in-person interviews with Mitchell, David Yaffe reveals the backstory behind the famous songs.

A life supported by high wire of love
Revisado: 01-05-23
In my mind, Joni is a poet then a painter. I have known her soul for 45 years. I have never been able to see her perform yet always wondered what it would be like to meet her. This book paints sun excellent picture of her, narrated in the style i would expect as if Joni herself was speaking. She lived freely, her experiences shaped her poetry and she had men who cared for her deeply - especially Graham and Larry. She was reckless: after 260 pack years of smoking she definitely had emphysema yet despite avoiding western medicine is still chasing dreams. I have two concerns about the book. There is no message for other artists. Second there WERE other artists who filled in the void left by Joni in the 80s-90s -- I was starving to find them. I could mention Shawn Colvin, Ricki Lee Jones, Vonda Shepherd & Cassandra Wilson. They should get a "shout out". There's another named Brandi. None of them were Joni. This very honest account from Joni lacks any introspection about what she could have done differently as an artist to grow with the changing "generations"

Average SciFi
Revisado: 02-26-22
Overall not as imaginative as prior works - The Lost Colony series. A bit trite when describing the “treasure hunt” section. Didn’t leave me with a inspiring “message” about human condition.
Finally I’m not clear if interplanetary transport was required for the final destination and why it wasn’t used earlier.

Tell me more about populism
Revisado: 02-02-22
As someone who doesn’t read political non fiction, I was drawn to this book from the impression Ms Hill portrayed during her impeachment testimony: intelligence, clarity and frankness. She maintained these qualities in this book and offered a humble glimpse into her journey toward her professional career and top advisor on Russian politics. The main thesis was the negative effects of populism when used for selfish political gain. I think she devoted an excess time to describing the abuses of our former president and elucidate how this paralleled with A Putin and B Johnson’s administrations. For me the critical part of the book was her suggestions to managing populism which she devoted to the last couple chapters of the book with just a couple anecdotes. I would have appreciated more of her global political expertise and more of her research to community revitalization efforts.

Historia
Belisarius is a quantum man, an engineered Homo quantus who fled the powerful insight of dangerously addictive quantum senses. He found a precarious balance as a con man, but when a client offers him untold wealth to move a squadron of warships across an enemy wormhole, he must embrace his birthright to even try. In fact, the job is so big that he'll need a crew built from all the new sub-branches of humanity. If he succeeds, he might trigger an interstellar war, but success might also point the way to the next step of Homo quantus evolution.
