Historia
Deep down here by the dark water lived old Gollum, a small slimy creature. I don’t know where he came from, nor who or what he was. He was Gollum—as dark as darkness, except for two big round pale eyes in his thin face. He had a little boat, and he rowed about quite quietly on the lake; for lake it was, wide and deep and deadly cold.

Excellent storytelling
Revisado: 07-31-24
I’ve read or listened to The Hobbit many times over the years. Andy Serkis’s performance is just excellent. The riddle scene alone is worth the credit. His inflection conveys layers of meaning. Listening has been a real treat.

Historia
Ostensibly about death and its attendant rituals, The Undertaking is in the end about life. In each case, he writes, it is the one that gives meaning to the other. A funeral director in Milford, Michigan, Lynch is that strangest of hyphenates, a poet-undertaker, but according to Lynch, all poets share his occupation, "looking for meaning and voices in life and love and death." Looking for meaning takes him to all sorts of unexpected places, both real and imagined. He embalms the body of his own father, celebrates the rebuilt bridge to his town's old cemetery, and more.

A surprising case for tradition
Revisado: 04-29-24
Thomas Lynch is first a poet, no matter what else he does to supplement his income. His language is spare. Senses and emotions hold the words together.
For those looking for the “eww” factor of handling the dead, you’ll be satisfied. You’ll also discover the reasons for body preparation, the viewing, the service, and the burial.
I’m a Caitlin Doughty (proponent of transparency in the funeral industry) fan. I was ready to view Lynch’s discussion with a gimlet eye. Unexpectedly, Lynch speaks of his services with the need to help the grieving. No hard sell, just a deep well of experience to provide the family what they want. He would help me plan a no frills cremation, or bury me in my wedding dress after delivering me to the grave by horse drawn carriage.
The compassion he has for parents of dead children makes Lynch my hero. He is so gentle, and donates much of his work to minimize expenses.
Joe Hill, Stephen King’s son, says he learned to write from JK Rowling. I’d like to learn from Thomas Lynch.

Terrific fun!
Revisado: 12-05-23
Adrian’s sister from another mister is wonderful without actually having superpowers. There’s all the groans, gore, and guns of the genre. There’s also heart, humor, and hope. The narrator is perfect with a British accent US southerners can follow. Grab hold and listen, this book will fly by.

Fun take on the Zompocalpse
Revisado: 11-29-23
This series has much less misery than many zombie books. The emphasis is on people trying to manage with a surprising number of advantages. Not that there’s a lack of shuffling and groaning. The writing and narration is a little stiff, but hang in. The subsequent books are smoother and stay engaging. Get this series on Kindle unlimited, then the audiobooks with the discount. Have fun!

The struggle against not-so-charming storybook narratives isn't the only complicating factor in Henrietta "Henry" Marchen's life. As part of the ATI Management Bureau team protecting the world from fairy tales gone awry, she's juggling her unwanted new status as a Snow White, dealing with a potentially dangerous Pied Piper, and wrangling a most troublesome wicked stepsister - along with a budding relationship with Jeff, her teammate.

You’ll never look at fairytales the same way
Revisado: 04-13-20
This is a closer look at the characters in Indexing, along with a suspenseful, smart story. The explanations for the strengths of fairytale people come from some of the oldest versions of their tales. Potential evil in this world is leavened with the efforts to do the right thing during trying times. Indexing: Reflections is a wonderful listen for any McGuire/Grant fan.

Perfect Match of Author and Narrators
Revisado: 01-24-17
Mordacious lives up to the author's other Audible works. The story focuses on the difficulties of being human, with a Zombie plague as part of the setting. The characters are interesting and believable. You meet a lot of people, but only a few in depth. It works. I think some of those folks will appear in future books.
The narrators tell the story from two first person points of view. They each use the skill of actors to animate the text. Listening to this book is a real treat. I look forward to more of Ms Fleming's work.

Great Addition to the Series
Revisado: 11-11-15
This installment has fewer ambiguous characters and more humor than many of her books. Lynley grows past some of his aristocratic assumptions, as does his girlfriend. The villainy is spread over several people, and those story lines are compelling. I really like the interaction of recurring characters, including some that were barely mentioned in previous novels.
The best part is Elizabeth George's writing style. She respects the reader with detailed descriptions and a decent vocabulary. I pick up some of the accent and patterns of my audiobooks. I like the way I think when Elizabeth is my influence. Of course, I go straight to southern redneck when listening to Diana Rowland's White Trash series.
Some reviews criticize John Lee, but I think he's great. Davina Porter also narrates some of the series, and she's also outstanding. While listening I thought how wonderful it is that two narrators can do justice to these books.
My hope is that Audible will bring more unabridged books to their inventory. Many of George's books aren't available in their entirety. Who knows the author's talent based on a pared-down version? Maybe some of the readers auditioning for Audible will make unabridged books their project.

High Marks for Bronson Pinchot
Revisado: 07-26-15
While this book has some familiar elements from other stories, it stands out by building a tight plot and by having Bronson Pinchot as narrator. Repino's writing style uses few unnecessary words. Sometimes it moves from tight to stark, but the use of well-chosen words is a wonderful change from authors who meander across the sentences with no known goal. As for Bronson Pinshot, his narration is fantastic. He handles the moods, action, and animal voices deftly. I always enjoy his work.
The story takes the world through a change of leadership, customs, and religion with speed and skill. I look forward to more of his writing.

Historia
I am not going to complain to you about my life. We’ve got zombies. They are not the brainless, rotting creatures we’d been led to expect. Unfortunately for us, they’re just as smart as they were before they died, very fast, much stronger than you or me, and possess no internal editor at all. Claws. Did I mention claws? I kill them for a living, but it’s as much a vocation as a freelance career choice. It helps me, helps my neighborhood, and the people I consider to be my family of choice. What’s more?

The funniest and most gruesome zombie story ever
Revisado: 03-22-15
At first I thought Frank was too cynical, too flip, and too likely to belittle everyone who tried to be his friend. Keep listening. Our author knows how make complex characters. He also remembers every zinger since 10th grade! Such a smart ass. Mr.Crawford describes the most grim guts on the wall scene, then observes something wildly funny. ROFL funny. Shoot food out your nose funny.
The twist on zombies in this story is really clever. They are quirky in every way, including retaining most of their premortem skills. I think, though, they meet your basic zombie definition. I'd be interested in others' opinions.
David Stifel is an admirable narrator. Except for making an Indian man and an Indian woman sound alike, he handles all the accents well.
I look forward to more works by this team, especially the next one in this series.
