Dynamic story, terrific character development and plot. Narration of a few of the characters are a bit grating but typical of how some mountain people talk and sound.

Interesting story at times boring and negatively affected by the narration of male voices. Did finish but it was an effort.

Historia
It is 1917, in that sliver of borderland that divides Georgia from Alabama. Dispossessed farmer Pearl Jewett ekes out a hardscrabble existence with his three young sons: Cane (the eldest, handsome, intelligent); Cob (short, heavyset, a bit slow); and Chimney (the youngest, thin, ill-tempered). Enjoyable and excellent narration
Revisado: 03-05-16
Requires suspension of belief to get by the coincidences of how all these characters continually know and are related to each other. Therefore does not make for a true historical novel. I do not mean that it diminishes the impact of the relating of the historical events. The story does put you there and has its intended emotional impact. I did enjoy this but am not moved to continue on to book 3.

Coincidences abound
Revisado: 02-10-16
Makes for a nice romance novel. A fair reflection of history. Too much soapbox concerning clash of classes. Way too many coincidences that make the writing suspect. The narrator is terrific. Sentence structure at times sophomoric.

Kept me interested and curious
Revisado: 01-13-16
Some parts a bit far fetched. Thought the ending a bit contrived. Did not like the narration by the mother especially her attempt at Gabe. Overall I enjoyed the book but have listened to many much better. Not sure I would listen to the same narrator who played Eve the mother.

I read this book several years ago. It is moving and a great story about overcoming challenges and tragedies that occur in life. Also, how to live life to the fullest and face death with dignity.
I have passed this book on to my friends and family. Everyone loved it.
I loved this audio version. However, I do not think it needs the music interludes.
I will listen to this book again.
