Historia
In I’m Laughing Because I’m Crying, Youngmi jokes through the retelling of her childhood as an offbeat biracial kid in Saipan, a place next to a place that Americans might know. She jokes through her difficult adolescence where she must parent her own parents: a mother who married her husband because he looked like white Jesus (and the singer of The Bee Gees). And with humor and irreverence and full-throated openness, she jokes even while sharing the story of what her family went through during the last century of colonialism and war in Korea.

Loved everything about this book
Revisado: 11-17-24
The story of her life is so well told with just the right level of self deprecation and without hubris that often annoys me in memoirs. I laughed so much, cried a whole lot, learned a lot, and thought about things in new ways. The author reading her own book was the cherry on top. The way she does other peoples voices made me laugh every time. Even the credits at the end made me laugh. I haven’t finished an audio book so quickly maybe ever?! It was just such a pleasure to look forward to listening to every spare minute I had.

Lovely and emotional read

Loved this story telling, wonderful narration. This book paced perfectly and came together so beautifully. Love a book without loose ends. I am curious to know how accurate the first generation history was. It felt very current but was set nearly 100 years ago.

Saints and Misfits is an unforgettable debut novel that feels like a modern-day My So-Called Life...starring a Muslim teen.

The worst narration
Revisado: 06-06-24
I honestly can’t say if I liked this book or not because the narration was so bizarrely cheerful - like listening to a bubbly teenager read to toddlers. It rarely matched the mood of the book, and never the most serious topics. I found myself trying to repeat many lines in my head in any other voice to try to separate the poor performance from the writing. It became impossible. I think this was probably a really good book that fell victim to a really poor narrator choice. Maybe I’ll go back and read it in print at some point.

Historia
When fourteen-year-old Lamya H realizes she has a crush on her teacher—her female teacher—she covers up her attraction, an attraction she can’t yet name, by playing up her roles as overachiever and class clown. Born in South Asia, she moved to the Middle East at a young age and has spent years feeling out of place, like her own desires and dreams don’t matter, and it’s easier to hide in plain sight. To disappear. But one day in Quran class, she reads a passage about Maryam that changes everything: When Maryam learned that she was pregnant, she insisted no man had touched her.

Best book I’ve read in so long
Revisado: 09-29-23
The story is a light, easy read but also so complex and layered. The narrator was such a joy and made me want to learn Arabic! The story was a beautiful tribute to a complex religion and a lovely way to highlight the individualism in all religious practice.
