I’m not a Fox News watcher so I thought this book might help me understand some of the dynamics. I learned a lot about the Murdoch family and the complicated relationships between the patriarch, his wives and children, and the media empire Rupert made. Fascinating and upsetting and so, so cynical.

The performance was pitch perfect, the pacing relentless.

Recommended.

I have known about this book all of my reading life, as a classic of modern history. The book is by turns riveting and nauseating, mysterious and banal. I know so much more now than I wanted to know. But the past informs the present whether we know the past or not… and I do not want to remain ignorant. Superb writing and the narration is pitch perfect.

This short book told me tales that I found fascinating and disturbing in equal measure. I agree with Kelly’s conclusion, but you should listen to the story and make up your own mind.

The subject matter is always interesting to me, and I thought I would experiment with reading one of the older titles. Mistake. The writing itself is ponderous, pedantic, and woefully biased. Worse, the narrator (while doing a good job with the material at hand) sounds a lot like Winston Churchill. After a few chapters I couldn't take it anymore, and gave up.

I enjoyed this lecture series. The subject is covered thoroughly and the information is accessible to non-historians. I found the professor engaging and cheerful but some of his humor came off as lame, and his pronunciations of the Etruscan and Latin woods was halting. Nevertheless I would listen to others lectures from him, because he does provide excellent content.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. I've always wondered why my office looks so neat and tidy, and my home so... NOT. If you read this book, you will gain many clues about how the way you arrange your stuff reflects you.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Snoop?

Near the end of the book, the author talks about how having photos of your family arranged behind your desk shows that you feel it is important to present yourself to others as being part of a family. This was enlightening to me, since I do have this arrangement.

Which character – as performed by David Drummond – was your favorite?

Not relevant - non-fiction book.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, I found that it was easy to pick up in sections.

Any additional comments?

I think I would have preferred a printed version. There are many tables of data, and that doesn't really translate well to an audible edition.

Funny, and enlightening. Definitely worth the read (or listen).

What did you love best about A Crown of Swords?

I heard more about Nyneave and Lan.

What did you like best about this story?

The relationship between Rand and Min is better defined.

What does Kate Reading and Michael Kramer bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I'm getting used to Michael Kramer finally. He sounded too much like a mid-western boy to my ears at first. Kate does a fine job all the way through.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

There are some poignant moments especially around Nyneave.

Would you listen to Lord of Chaos again? Why?

I probably would not listen to it again, unless I decided to go through the entire series again.

What other book might you compare Lord of Chaos to and why?

The pacing is similar to the five books before this.

Have you listened to any of Kate Reading and Michael Kramer ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, I've listened to the prior books. The readers' performan is very similar, and I'm finally getting used to the voices. Initially I was very unhappy with Michael Kramer's rendition of Rand's voice - it sounded too Midwestern to my ears.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Nothing really stands out.

Well worth the listen (and read too if you want to read the book). Barbara Tuchman's history of Europe in the 1300's will add to your understanding of Europe's origins and continuing entanglements. It's long, and engrossing. The narration by Nadia May is superb - I could listen to her for days.

Classic story of Imperial Rome!

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 06-28-11

The book covers the lurid, fascinating story of Claudius, accidental emporer of Rome in the Imperial age. Lively story, with a decent base in history (although he does demonize Livia). The narration by Derek Jacobi really brings it to life, as he played Claudius in the television series (BBC I think).
