Historia
When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

Obligatory Read for all Americans
Revisado: 12-27-24
This book is phenomenal. What Everett captures in such stark relief is the side of a story that has gone far too long untold. He masterfully slices through the dichotomy of black and white experience in America. He uses choice allegories, symbols, and dialogue to illuminate the immense apparatus of power white America built and wielded so viciously--one that we are still dismantling to this day.

Historia
A "normal" Caribbean hurricane travels from east to west, but Lenny was anything but normal. Spawned south of Cuba in 1999, this late-season storm defied all predictions by moving steadily east toward the Leeward Islands. Eventually building almost to Category 5 strength, Lenny squatted for two days between the Virgin Islands and St. Martin, whipping the ocean with 155 mile-per-hour winds and sixty-foot seas.

Great Story, Great Telling
Revisado: 12-10-24
Good story. Many lessons included. What a brutal and unpredictable storm. The resolve that these men must have had in order to cope is quite inspiring. This is a thorough account of all the pertinent facts. Narrator is great too.

Many people dream of escaping modern life, but most will never act on it. This is the remarkable true story of a man who lived alone in the woods of Maine for 27 years, making this dream a reality—not out of anger at the world, but simply because he preferred to live on his own.

Historia
John Plaster’s riveting account of his covert activities as a member of a special operations team during the Vietnam War is “a true insider’s account...this eye-opening report will leave readers feeling as if they’ve been given a hot scoop on a highly classified project” (Publishers Weekly). Code-named the Studies and Observations Group, SOG was the most secret elite US military unit to serve in the Vietnam War - so secret that its very existence was denied by the government.

Great collection of stories. Sometimes the rhythm felt a bit choppy, but I would still recommend it.

Historia
In 1984, John Thompson was convicted and sentenced to death for the murder of a prominent white man in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was sent to Angola Prison and confined to his cell for 23 hours a day. However, Thompson adamantly proclaimed his innocence and just needed lawyers who believed that his trial had been mishandled and would step up to the plate against the powerful DA’s office. But who would fight for Thompson’s innocence when he didn’t have an alibi for the night of the murder and there were two key witnesses to confirm his guilt?

Incredible Story
Revisado: 03-26-24
This story, including its performance, were of great value to me. It gives a window into the pitfalls of the American Justice system—a system I have reverence for, but also a system that has a lot of problems. John is an inspiration to anyone in the virtues of perseverance, integrity, and strength. His incredible humanity is omnipotent.

Tony Tetro, one of the most renowned art forgers in history, will make you question every masterpiece you’ve ever seen in a museum, gallery, or private collection. Tetro’s “Rembrandts,” “Caravaggios,” “Miros,” and hundreds of other works now hang on walls around the globe.

A new way to view art
Revisado: 01-13-24
Ironically, an authentic story that helps illuminate the schemes at play in the world of fine art. He was a great foil to the pomp and pretension of the rich and allowed them to let themselves be fooled. His story telling and creating incredible forgeries proves that he had just as much artistry as those he copied.
