I really wanted to like it
Revisado: 08-11-24
Peter is by far the most interesting character, and the story suffers by not having him in it very much for the first half of the book.
I was really interested, I loved Cemetery Boys and the premise sounded good. but I never really got hooked, Wendy is honestly a little dull and it's clear she still needs a ton of therapy. I'm not giving it a terrible rating because I seem to be in the minority and because I didn't finish. it just felt like work to listen to.
maybe you'll enjoy it more than I did, I'm going to try the Sunbearer Trials instead.

Toby never meant to be a highway robber, but needs must. He didn’t plan to impersonate a top London valet either, but when the chance comes to present himself as the earl of Arvon’s new gentleman's gentleman, he grabs it. Unfortunately, the earl is the man he seduced and robbed on the road to get here. Oops.

I rather like dual narrators
Revisado: 06-23-24
It's not as good as a fun radio theater style reading, but particularly with POV shifts, I do like when the characters are narrated by different people.
the story is short and cute, both characters are endearing and it has a sweet ending. it's not long so it's good for an afternoon listen ~

London, 1883. The Veil between the living and dead has thinned. Violet-eyed mediums commune with spirits under the watchful eye of the Royal Speaker Society, and sixteen-year-old trans, autistic Silas Bell would rather rip out his violet eyes than become an obedient Speaker wife. After a failed attempt to escape an arranged marriage, Silas is diagnosed with Veil sickness—a mysterious disease sending violet-eyed women into madness—and shipped away to Braxton’s Finishing School and Sanitorium.

an excellent body horror experience
Revisado: 04-03-24
As a transmasc autistic with severe anxiety, it is extremely rare to hear almost my exact point of view in a character. the biggest departure being surgery and human anatomy as a special interest.
This book is brutally honest without engaging in torture porn and is a thrilling experience. I do not know if it would hit someone who does not view the world through this lens as hard, but I hope it would instill a spirit of empathy. The horrific practices centered around a fantastical premise still happen for different reasons, even today.
But take care, this books trigger warnings should be taken very seriously.

Historia
Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap out of the audio, as skillfully animated as arcane revenants. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy. Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse.

witty dialogue, excellent action scenes
Revisado: 02-17-24
I love the main character and her dynamic with Harrow. I love the casual world building that does not over explain itself, trusting us to be smart enough to keep up. I was surprisingly pleased with the end, I was afraid it would end in don't terrible cliche, but the author neatly wrapped things up in a very interesting manner and with enough loose ends that it would be interesting to return to the world (particularly from a new character POV).

Historia
Narrator Dan Stevens ( Downton Abbey) presents an uncanny performance of Mary Shelley's timeless gothic novel, an epic battle between man and monster at its greatest literary pitch. In trying to create life, the young student Victor Frankenstein unleashes forces beyond his control, setting into motion a long and tragic chain of events that brings Victor to the very brink of madness. How he tries to destroy his creation, as it destroys everything Victor loves, is a powerful story of love, friendship, scientific hubris, and horror.

the narrator did a good job conveying the emotions of the characters. the book can be a bit tedious as it favors monologues and soliloquies over proper dialog. But I think that's just a style of the time.

Historia
Gideon Frayne has spent his whole working life as a policeman in the village of Dark on Bodmin Moor. His first missing-child case is eating him alive. When his own boss sends in a psychic to help with the case, he's gutted - he's a level-headed copper who doesn't believe in such things, and he can't help but think that the arrival of clairvoyant Lee Tyack is a comment on his failure to find the little girl. But Lee is hard to hate, no matter how Gideon tries. At first Lee's insights into the case make no sense, but he seems to have a window straight into Gideon's heart.

Well written and a pretty quick listen. I think it's fair to warn that there is some spicy stuff, so maybe best listened to with headphones. The story is good, not too predictable and with that fun air of just-not-quite fantasy.
