Historia
Bringing the magic and suspense of the All Souls Trilogy to a deeply satisfying conclusion, this highly anticipated finale went straight to number one on the New York Times best seller list. In The Book of Life, Diana and Matthew time-travel back from Elizabethan London to make a dramatic return to the present - facing new crises and old enemies. At Matthew’s ancestral home, Sept-Tours, they reunite with the beloved cast of characters from A Discovery of Witches - with one significant exception.

Really smart & inviting story
Revisado: 11-09-18
Both supernatural with a twist as well as romantic, the story is very well crafted-just like the two preceding books.
It’s quite lovely that while missing the cliff hanger endings that can get so damn annoying, it also doesn’t bare the author from coming back and adding more to Dianna and Matthews story (as there’s already a newly released book focused on Marcus).
As with the previous book, there are rather steamy scenes in the book but they don’t over populate it either. The relationship between both characters as well as their relationships outside of each other is explored more and believable in the way it all developed.
Sure there’s always going to be a suspension of belief in a fictional book, especially anything supernaturally prolific... However I did not find that the world Deborah Harkness has created over the last three books to be anything other than a very refreshing take on a genre that really has scene it all- even the classic tropes used are presented in a way that feels new and exciting. She hasn’t simply stumbled her way through as far too often can be seen in this genre and most especially when there is a forbidden (or any) kind of love story at the heart of it.
As far as her ability to paint a picture? She’s richly talented in this regard. Grabbing at and presenting the elements that are so important in real life as we come into contact with new and old friends, new and old spaces, etc. Focusing just enough on one of the most important senses- our sense of smell. I’ve read criticism of this aspect of the authors book and have to beg to disagree with those that found the inclusion of the sense of smell with her character descriptions. After all, it is something that truly can transport us to a fond or horrible memory- like the smell of warm apple cider on a cold winters day can warm some nearly as much as the actual drink, the scent of sunscreen even in a gloomy day can temporarily lift your mood.... or the smell of a pumpkin spiced latte to make you realize winter is coming and omg if you hear one more person mention a damned pumpkin spiced latte you... Well, hopefully you get the picture.
In the end the descriptions are typically short and sweet and not nearly the hr long ordeal some would have you think- adding to rather than taking away from a very enjoyable listening experience.
The narrator is one of my favourites, the entire book is performed beautifully by her though my one serious note of irritation was.... the damn music at the beginning and the end. It’s obnoxiously levelled so that you have to strain to hear the narration over the instrumentals. Thankfully this was the beginning and ending only- just an truly unfortunate mare on an otherwise flawless performance. Hopefully it might yet get fixed? Anyway...
If you’re in the US, definitely read this series!! If you’re in Canada? Umm. Well, you can always use your free book a month from audible to get the second and third book in the series until audible figures out why they are supposed to be offering the first book and yet their website blocks access to it and yet all of the other books in the series are available for purchase. Guess audible is having a few “issues” with offering a separate Canadian side to their US than originally thought. It’s a shame, audible is a fantastic service- pre change over. 🤷🏽♀️
Before I delve down any other segways, my final thoughts are summed simply enough, if you like smart* supernatural books? Deborah Harkness is going to be a new favourite for you!
*when I say “smart” I do NOT in anyway, shape nor form mean “boring”!!!

Why the 2 different narrators?!
Revisado: 09-04-18
Both are good, don’t get me wrong but.... well the one playing our Heroine mostly is a touch grating. It takes a moment before the annoyance her voice elicits wears off and so each time they switch back and fourth it actually pulls me right out of the damn story!! So frustrating. So unnecessary. Would have been understandable if they’d went with a male voice actor but they didn’t. Which- ok- than why do we need two when the deeper voices woman does a fine job of all characters??? It’s a good story but the switching back and fourth is definitely not helping that story get told. Simple as that.

Historia
Laid back, ultra–California cool, the former cop turned PI begins each day with the Dawn Patrol, a close-knit group of surfers, best friends who not only ride waves together but have one another's backs out of the water. It's the life Boone loves, all he wants. To him, "There's no such thing as a bad day at the beach." So when one of their own is murdered - especially an icon like Kelly Kuhio, a local hero - and another surfer, a young punk from the Rockpile Crew, stands accused, the small world of Pacific Beach is rocked to its core.

I did enjoy the story but....
Revisado: 07-21-18
My partner and I loved the first story, and this second one was pretty well written with unexpected twists and turns as well.... the one draw back being the reader.
I don’t mind his voice, however the first book Dawn Patrol, was fantastically read. The reader suited the work perfectly and sucked you further into the story where as this new reader unfortunately did not. If anything I found myself having to listen to parts over again as I didn’t find the reader grabbed my attention nearly enough. At certain points it was even difficult to actually figure out who was supposed to be talking. That was frustrating.

And when they decided she was a liability, they came for her without warning. Now she rarely stays in the same place or uses the same name for long. They've killed the only other person she trusted, but something she knows still poses a threat. They want her dead, and soon.

great book!
Revisado: 09-15-16
love the performance and the book was an enthralling listen, there were, as in the last book, a few continuity errors. Points that should have been caught in editing, although the hitched much less than the previous book and overall didn't dimenish what was an enjoyable story. rather different in tone and setting but more a breath of fresh air and a chance to learn more and build up to the next book in the series!
