Historia
On the muddy banks of the Calumet River, a body has been found posed next to a series of mysterious glyphs and bearing wounds from a ritualistic slaying. Chicago detective Addie Bisset knows only one man who can decipher the message left by the killer: her friend Dr. Evan Wilding. A brilliant forensic semiotician, Evan decodes the etchings as Viking Age runes. They suggest either human sacrifice or righteous punishment. But to what god? And for what sins? Only one thing is clear from the disturbing runic riddles: there are more victims to come.

Lots of Potential
Revisado: 03-20-22
NO DOGS GET KILLED IN THIS BOOK. I was nervous about one part of the book and found myself wishing I had known that fact ahead of time!
I was eager to read At First Light because I have very much enjoyed the author's Sydney Rose Parnell series. This new series takes place in Chicago and features homicide detective Adrianne “Addie” Bisset and her friend, Dr. Evan Wilding. (Dr. Wilding is a person with dwarfism, which was interesting to read about. And his goshawk, Ginny, made me want to have one!) There were some other great characters, too, like Addie's partner, Detective Patrick McBrady, and Dr. Wilding's postdoc, Diana.
The story begins with a man lying dead with three fatal wounds. His neck has been slashed and he has a noose around his neck, as well. As if that weren't enough, he's also had his head bashed in. Around the ritually posed body are sticks covered with mysterious symbols, which turn out to be Viking runes. And there the book kind of lost me...
I wish At First Light had been more about everything else that was going on in the book and less about the runes. The author must have spent a TON of time researching them but I just. wasn't. interested. My eyes started to glaze over whenever Dr. Wilding went on and on about the symbols and what they might or might not mean. I personally felt as though the infodumps broke the flow of everything else that was happening in the book. After a while, I found myself skipping over those parts.
Tim Campbell was excellent with the delivery of the story

2.5 Stars God's peacekeepers or vigilantes?
Revisado: 10-09-21
When Dark Intercept was released, I was hopeful. I knew there was going to be a Christian element to the story and I wasn't opposed to the concept in theory. But the story is way too far outside the lines of special forces prowess and down the rabbit hole of end times rhetoric. This is the kind of book that readers of Max Lucado or the Left Behind series will want to read. I for one wish that the authors would stay in their own lane and not attempt to marry the popular Seal Team stories with supernatural bad guys.
MacLeod Andrews was great with the delivery of the story and the only reason I finished the book

The Book Was Very Slow - DNF
Revisado: 08-18-21
I purchased this book because of the high number of very good reviews here and was in need of something new and engaging to listen to. This was my fourth by Lavyrle Spencer the other were so good. But this book was so slow. I thought the development of love between the characters was bumpy and their constant fights (which, I know are supposed to masquerade as their resistance to their irresistible love) were just annoying and I found Teddy's unwavering focus on the difference of 16 years incredibly senseless - I just didn't get that.
The narrator was not to my liking at all and in the end I just couldn't finish the book
This one is going back
Susan Hanfield was very monotone and I found it hard to tell apart her male voices

Very disappointing!
Revisado: 01-20-21
I love regency romances, and I've listened to many of this author's books. I've liked most of them and loved a few. This book was very disappointing. It was like listening to a romance about young adolescents. He pulled her hair. She followed him around and screeched at him. There was absolutely no maturity about either of the leads. They had no chemistry. There was hardly any story-line. Very disappointing!
Rosalyn Landor was excellent with the delivery of the story and the only reason I finished a boring book

Good Addition To The Series
Revisado: 07-23-20
A Columbus cop from Kate Burkholder’s past arrives in Painter’s Mill and turns her world upside-down. Gina Colorosa fled Columbus amidst allegations of corruption with a gunshot to her shoulder. Kate is at odds to help her because of their unpleasant past and she knows that harboring a fugitive could get her into serious trouble. But a blizzard keeps them in close quarters together within the home of an Amish widower and his three kids. Kate and her partner Tomasetti’s do their own investigation into whether Gina’s claims are valid. It seems that someone is trying to frame her, but she’s not entirely innocent and Kate can tell Gina is not being entirely truthful.
I enjoyed the setting of a rural farmhouse covered with feet of snow. The weather itself is bit of antagonist here in addition to the corrupt Columbus cops. That Kate and Gina are forced to live in an Amish domestic setting for the duration of the story was quaint. And I appreciated that this plot went beyond the usual close-knit community and explored the department that got Kate started as a cop. That glimpse into her past delivered some new insight into Kate’s history. This was another solid, exciting installment in the series.
Kathleen McInerney was fantastic with the delivery of the story

I don't Know How I Finished
Revisado: 03-03-20
Wow!! I'm just so disappointed, I loved On Dublin Street, I have enjoyed many of Ms.Young books. Play On was a big miss for me. The characters are very immature, such a cliche listen, the beginning was a 18 year old melodrama. The whole "big misunderstanding " between Aidan and Nora was so played out, so unoriginal, so immature and I think I've read this type of story line as far back as the "Dynasty " "Knots Landing " days. I mean seriously it was more like a soap opera than anything else. Just so ridiculous at times, so very As the World Turns like, not anything that I won't forget about by the next day. And the Epilogue was boring , 2 months later ,so uninteresting, nothing exciting to end on , just not feeling this soap opera listen at all 2 stars only.
Claire Kilpatrick was just OK with the delivery of the story.

Least Favourite Of The Series
Revisado: 10-07-19
I have been a huge fan of the entire FATAL series, with a few books better than others, but this book was only just OK and the author can thank Eva Kaminsky for that. Perhaps I'm just bored with the constant reminders of just how much Sam loves Nick and vice versa. And don't forget how much Sam loves Skippy and Celia, Gonzo, and Freddy, Avery and Shelby, and...and...and. . .
I've always loved serials which came from a place of deep love, where the family stands steadfastly behind the protagonist, where there is positive energy which surrounds the main couple. But this story was so repetitive, it borderline on filler. With reduction of the mutual admiration society's constant remarks of just how much they loved each other, it would have been a considerately shorter read, and more powerful.
It pains me to write this. The quality wasn't there. Many of the conversations were banal, leaving me wondering why they were talking at all. Again, filler came to mind. I feel that this book beats the dead horse too many times.
I also found the ending really unbelievable even for fiction.
Eva Kaminsky was outstanding with the delivery of the story and the reason I finished the book

Amazing Book
Revisado: 01-22-19
My first book by this author and I was so delighted in this mystery. How an author can put all these characters and twists and turns, and in the end all come together is amazing. I thought I had a clue to what might be happening by the middle of the book and without giving it away, I was correct at the end. Highly sophisticated and complex mystery and since I read all U.K. inspector novels, look forward to listening to them all. I just could not put the book down. Please Audible bring us the next book in the series.

Good and Poor
Revisado: 08-15-18
DI Tom Mariner and his PC Tony Knox respond to an apparent suicide. The victim is journalist Edward Barham. Not long ago Mariner saw Barham in a bar picking up a prostitute. Under the stairs in the house, Mariner finds Jamie. At first he thinks that he is high on something but it turns out that Jamie is autistic.
What follows is a police procedural. It focusses on the investigation, but also on Mariner’s personal life. He is a solitary man who enjoys long walks and has trouble trusting himself or others – especially women. He has trouble relating to women and seems afraid of them.
Mariner tries to connect with Jamie with little or no result. Anna Barham, the sister of Eddie, is greatly put off and frustrated by Mariner’s attempt to what she sees as almost subverting her brother Jamie. It turns out that Eddie was investigating a crime kingpin at the time of his death. Is this why he was killed? Is it some other reason? Mariner must sort it out.
The investigation turns a bit keys stone cops with obvious lapses in evidence storage and real police procedure in regards to evidence. The name of the murderer turns out not to be a surprise, but the reason for the murder is more than a little twisted.
This is a fairly well written and plotted novel. The characters are interesting, although Mariner is more than a little draining at times. This is an average book, with average writing. It is not among the best books that I have read certainly.
