It is hard to overcome bad narration in an audiobook

I am all for giving an emerging military aviation series room to develop, but... The sound effects ruined the experience. I almost stopped listening more than once - the radio clicks and phone beeps are the worst ever. If this is to be an aviation series, the author will need to deliver a true flying experience - this is more like being told a flying story, less like being in the cockpit. The editor needs to step up: Rapid City (and the base) are in South Dakota, not North. Right once; wrong once - harms general credibility.
On the plus side, lots of interesting story elements. Perhaps too many to try to pack in any one book.

I did persevere - while not my favorite Von Lustbader story, the story is OK. However, the narrator's attempts to portray gender and accent, in addition to being distractingly cartoonish, had me chasing volume up and down as I attempted to mitigate the diminishing volume and sound quality as the narrator attempted his unnecessary portrayal of gender and ethnicity.

Yes, I was using my best hearing aid and all of the sound conditioning my Galaxy could muster - unnecessarily unlistenable.

The SEAL book I'd always been looking for

I licensed this Audble because I wanted to learn about the relationship and Cairo. I got that, but much more. A career bio from a thoughtful warrior - a humble - warrior - a Patriot - a true hero. I knew a SEAL quite well. He was not like the protagonists in most SEAL books. I am deeply sorry for Will and Cairo's wounds and injurys. I am greatful for their service. I am glad that Will wrote this book honoring Cairo, but especially for giving us a better picture of who a Human SEAL warrior can be. I wish the Nation did not have to ask for such sacrafice from young people who are not yet able to provide informed consent - but we do. I am glad that eventually we did the right thing by Will and Cairo. I wish this were required reading/listening for all who would be Commander in Chief, Sec Def, Sec Nav, CNO, etc.

Helped me see classics I knew in a new light - Exposed me to classics I don't yet know. Following Puchner's ideas on literature, the evolving technology supporting story telling, and the contextual importance of place offered me new vantage points.

I've listened to several hundred Audible books and this is the first time I've run afoul of policy. The audio book was on sale, so less than seven bucks, but still, I should be able to return it if it is not satisfactiry. The work is a poor quality of scholarly effort. The cadence of the narration makes me want to rip off my headphones. I have set two new rules for myself because of this book and Audible's narrow minded return policy: 1) don't buy anything less than 4.3 stars, 2) review Audiobooks catalog once each month as an alternative.

I have an 11 yr Female Std Poodle that has been a terrific companion dog - she (and I) had lots of training when she was young. Still, I learned a great deal listening to this book and wished I had the book even before I brought her home.

Usually, when I encounter an action story with great comlexity, I keep coming out of the story and thinking about how contrived it seems. Not true in this case. The story and the characters are indeed complex, but I bought into both.

This is my favorite Gregg Hurwitz book to date.

If every young adult read this book, we'd be flush in STEM talent. Brilliant narration.

This is a book to motivate you to a new language. It is a good guide to setting realistic expectations. It appears to offer good resources, but I was never able to find the password that was promised to open the book's reference materials (hence the four stars overall).

Great character development (Subs and Mariners)

The development of submarines and a handful of fictional submariners across the timeline of WWII in the Pacific was an easy way to review a slice of Naval history. Harrison and Braddock propelled me non-stop through the six stories. Having personally counted on torpedos to perform as advertised, it was a shock to learn about their state in WWII. And with DiLouie having time over six books, he develops a thoughtful position on war.
