Historia
With compassion and insight, Thomas Moore offers a compelling case for an easier, lighter way of moving through life by experiencing the peace, calm, and openness of emptiness. Through ancient and modern stories, Moore gently shows that our constant multitasking may not be getting us anywhere, and that emptiness is not a lack but an invitation that can be our greatest teacher. A daily awareness and appreciation of the quiet spaciousness in our world and our own lives is not a retreat from reality but a rich and full welcome to all that is most meaningful and real.

The Importance of Emptiness
Revisado: 10-27-24
Another stellar piece of work from Thomas Moore, read by the author himself. All of Moore’s works resonate deeply with me and being of a more Zen mindset than anything else, I was particularly interested in this title since Emptiness is kind of central to Zen. I love how Moore pulls from various religious traditions, mythology and psychology to make his points. A great addition to his canon of work. Highly recommended.

Historia
According to Thomas Moore, people today have lost the deep, direct, and vivid sense of what it means to live with passion and with originality and that beneath the ideas of who we are and who we should be lies an original self. The fifty meditations in this collection offer fresh interpretations of living with that original self rather than conformity.

Soul Food
Revisado: 09-05-24
I have been an admirer of Thomas Moore for quite a while. Oddly, it was my dentist that first brought my attention to Moore back when Care of the Soul was first published. Perhaps soul can be defined as the unconscious self and its needs, desires and offerings that can and should be listened to. I’m a Zen Buddhist at heart, but I find Moore’s depictions of soul and self as an important counter-balance to No Self. What is life without poetry?

Exciting new developments in brain science are continuing the debates on these issues, and the field has now expanded to include biologists, neuroscientists, psychologists, and philosophers. This controversial book clarifies the potentially confusing arguments, and the major theories, while also outlining the amazing pace of discoveries in neuroscience. Covering areas such as the construction of self in the brain, mechanisms of attention, the neural correlates of consciousness, and the physiology of altered states of consciousness, Susan Blackmore highlights our latest findings.

Great Book, Great Narration
Revisado: 07-26-24
This is a fantastic introduction to one of the biggest mysteries in science, consciousness. Blackmore covers all the bases. You don't need to be a neuroscientist to understand or appreciate this thoughtful introduction to this important topic. The narrator, Zehra Jane Naqvi, does a fantastic job reading the book. She is extremely clear with the right amount of inflection and nuance to make the listening experience highly enjoyable. Another great book in Oxford's Very Short Introduction series.

Another Oxford Gem
Revisado: 07-23-24
So far, I haven’t encountered an Oxford Very Short Introduction series book that I hasn’t impressed me. Although already somewhat familiar with Buddhist history, there were still many things new to me. And perhaps the biggest takeaway, was understanding it in a larger and better defined context.
