This was recommended by someone when I asked for fast paced books. This is NOT fast paced even a little. I got 3/4 through and they aren't together. It's too much repetitive internal dialog. I felt no threat from this murderous mmc. I didn't feel anything about anyone. The premise falls apart when we find out her excuse for stripping, which she seemed to hate was, was that she still wanted to dance for a living after her injury. She could teach dance lessons or open a dance school if she really wanted to dance so bad. She has an offer to go to college. She could get a degree and open a chain of dance studios. She has options besides stripping, which i@ a perfectly fine job if she actually liked doing it.

The narrator reads this as if it's a fun memoir about clown school. This is horrific stuff.

I really didn't like narrator. I don't think he actually took in what he was reading otherwise he would have read it with more seriousness.

This book is so amazing. I've read it before and loved it. I was worried going in because so many narrators ruin books. This narrator did a perfect job!

A high school girl accidentally gets transported back in time to prehistoric times. This back before humans used language. She talks a lot and her "mouth sounds" give him a headache. Hahaha!

He has lived alone, with no other human contact since his tribe was taken out in a fire. He is so grateful to find a mate, though he doesn't understand how she got there.

They have such a beautiful life together but he knows they must eventually find another tribe to live with.

This is one of the very few stories I can stand to read or "read" more than once. You have to read this!

I love Sam Mariano. I wanted to read Contempt but needed to read this first. I was expecting more evil from the book that came after 'Even if it Hurts'. This was very mild, which made it difficult to want to finish. it makes me concerned that Contempt will be boring to me.

This was well written like all of Sam's books. There is nothing wrong with it. I was just looking for something darker.

Contains spoilers in the last paragraph.

The story is good. I really liked it. It held my attention and didn't drive me crazy with extra internal dialog, which happens to me a lot since I'm very impatient. I liked the characters.

But we need to discuss the elephant in the room. What in the world was up with Ruby's voice?? Did the narrator suck in helium throughout or was she using this book as an audition tape for a kid's cartoon show? I would say this is a good book to read rather than listen to.

And this isn't criticizing the book because that's just how the character is written and I don't have a problem with that, but if Ashton's mom was a real person I'd want to smack her. She supposedly wanted Ash and his father to get along but she squirrels away all the money that his dad sends them and lets Ash think that they live in poverty because his dad's a deadbeat?? Gah!!

This was a hard story to hear and I can't imagine how hard it was for Ms. Stoddard to tell. My heart goes out to her and her family with the difficulties with the adoption.

This story is a classic example of law enforcement not doing their job when it comes to sexual assault. LEO only wants to act if it is the perfect rape. They come up with all sorts of excuses for rapists and leave victims to question if what happened to them "counts." Talk about secondary trauma. I am impressed with Ms. Stoddard and I am proud of how she refused to let other people's doubts minimize what happened to her.

Narration Brings Down Another Book

The story was good but the narrator was annoying. He was haughty and had this affect that reminded me of Mr. Howell on Gilligan's Island. It didn't fit the characters at all. It was only when he voiced Gordy that he sounded like a normal person. It distracted from the story. A good narrator enhances a book and he did not. It's impossible to tell from the small snippet if the narrator is going to make you want to rip your ears inside out.

First of all it's not "Multiple Personality Disorder". It's "Dissociative Identity Disorder" and this podcast is plenty recent enough to be aware or become aware of that. Second, Halliday is really disrespectful and cavalier about the whole thing. If I were producing the show I would have made her speak respectfully. She made up her mind before she investigated it. She says it herself. She said that right when she got to the first scene she went to she didn't know anything about what had been happening and made up her mind there. She wrote up a report diagnosing Cindy but she had no education or credentials to do so. She knew that Cindy was seeing a forensic psychiatrist so why didn't she wait? And she kept saying she was trying to "get her". She is exactly the worst type of LEO. Instead of looking at it from other angles she decided to attack the victim. She sounds like she's jealous of the attention Cindy got (which Cindy clearly didn't want) and definitely jealous of her looks. I can't imagine she would stop eating to appear gaunt if she was only in it for attention. And the hospital visit after Cindy was found near the university, I can only imagine Cindy would avoid talking to the detective who is clearly out to get her. Abuse from LEO is almost as traumatic as the original event. This horrible woman bragged about being the reason Cindy moved. I could not be more disgusted with someone. I wonder how many other lives she ruined.

There really should be a forum somewhere for people to talk about the podcast. It provokes big feelings.

I liked the book.

I didn't care for the narrator. She read everything in the same tone. Whether it was happy or sad or angry, it was the same tone. I'd normally give the narrator two stars but since she didn't outright irritate me with her voice, she gets three. But this narration made me feel like I was listening to a documentary without the feeling a documentary narrator portrays, which isn't much. She took away from the story.

I wasn't enamored with this book and probably won't finish the duet. I got to the point where I wanted to throw my device against a wall if the fmc referred the cult people as "crazy" one more time. We get it! They're not sane! The book was ok but it didn't hold my interest. I don't take off stars for that because I'm sure other people probably love this type of writing.

The female narrator was good. She did fairly well with the kid's voice but it was whiny. It sounded like she was about to tattle every time she spoke.

The male narrator sounded flat and pretentious. If you ever watched the TV show "MASH" and saw Major Winchester, that's what he sounded like. it was a total turn off. I could not picture the H as attractive when he sounded like he did.

And I'm guessing they're all French so why does only one character have a French accent? Bartholomew sounded French. But if they're all French, shouldn't he have the same accent as the rest of them.
