masterful worldbuilding and spectacular characters come together to make a phenomenal standalone
Revisado: 07-11-24
Jenn Lyons does it again with a phenomenal story rooted in characters with amazing chemistry and braced with engaging worldbuilding. This is a must read for fantasy fans, especially if you like dragons.
As an added bonus, Lauren Fortgang's narration is excellent and she captures the essence of every character and hits the right tone for every scene

Excellent story, uneven narration
Revisado: 06-20-23
This was an excellent and gripping story!
my only complaint is that the two narrators of this audiobook delivered very differently experiences. The scenes in Max's POV were read in a frantic, monotone rush that worked great for the battle scenes, but not so much in the slower scenes. In contrast, the reading of Tessana and Apha's scenes were more nuanced and completely absorbing.

Historia
All legends are born of truths. And just as much lies. These are mine. Judge me for what you will. But you will hear my story first. I buried the village of Ampur under a mountain of ice and snow. Then I killed their god. I've stolen old magics and been cursed for it. I started a war with those that walked before mankind and lost the princess I loved, and wanted to save. I've called lightning and bound fire. I am legend. And I am a monster.

A familiar story told anew, with passion
Revisado: 09-22-22
Virdi brings his story to life with vivid descriptions and honest experiences, it's easy to forget there was an author outside of the frame narrative.
Fans of the Kingkiller Chronicles will notice familiar beats, but told with a new melody and rhythm that makes The First Binding a worthy song on its own. Highly recommended to all fans of the genre, and I am looking forward to the next installment.

Even better than the first
Revisado: 09-24-21
Willow of Ashes was a fantastic opener, and Orbs of Azure took the story so far and ran with it. In this installment, Raine demonstrates her mastery of the balance between suspense and relief, between mystique and satisfying answers, and between action and deliberation.
From the beginning, the consequences of the villain's plot as well as the hero's actions begin to unfold, revealing the tapestry of the story to come. At no point does the story backtrack or fallback on delaying tropes for the sake of status quo, it's constantly moving forward and progress os always happening in a satisfying direction.
As before, the reading and sound effects are spot on and immersive

Double-Crossing the Bridge is a fantastic story with highly relatable characters that strikes the perfect balance between comedy and tension as it captures the spirit of classic heist movies. Full marks, and I look forward to seeing what Sover had in store next.

Girl and the Mountain answers too many questions
Revisado: 05-07-21
The Girl and the Mountain starts and ends on very strong notes, but falls apart in the later half of the story when exposition that completely demystifies the setting by answering questions that served to add a mystique to the world. Any answer to those questions would have been unsatisfying by dint of taking away the mystery, though the answers given in this book are doubly so. I feel like the narrative would have been better served with knowledgeable characters refusing or being unable to divulge what they know.
Aside from that, however, I enjoyed the story and its characters, and was satisfied with the reveal of where this story takes place in relation to Book of the Ancestor. When the story returned its focus on the experiences of the characters, it was a wonderful ride. The exposition and reveals about the world's backstory, however, were sour disappointments that make the rest more bitter sweet.

Awesome rendition of a killer story.
Revisado: 03-13-21

Willow of Ashes is a story in a world that feels lived in, with awesome magic and believable characters. Featuring a knightly order of grim reapers, easy to follow yet exciting magic systems, and a ferret that believes he is a galactic emperor, I recommend this book to anyone. In particular, fans of Brandon Sanderson and Django Wexler will love it.
