Historia
Bats can hear shapes, plants can eat light, and bees can dance maps. When his life took him to a painfully dark place, the poet behind The CryptoNaturalist, Jarod K. Anderson, found comfort and redemption in these facts and the shift in perspective that comes from paying a new kind of attention to nature. Something in the Woods Loves You tells the story of the darkest stretch of a young person’s life, and how deliberate and meditative encounters with plants and animals helped him see the light at every turn.

Not a nature book, but still…
Revisado: 04-25-25
Though the book connects the author’s healing to the natural world, the main focus is on his depression. So, this is much less a nature book than a reflection on mental health. Maybe a bit rambling at times, but also offering some gems of insight and language. From Chapter 19: "In lieu of having all the answers, I turn to what I do know. In the end, you were a part of the sky on loan to a body, a part of the sea that awoke to thought, a part of the earth that carried a name."

Historia
Does George Washington still matter? Best-selling author Nathaniel Philbrick argues for Washington’s unique contribution to the forging of America by retracing his journey as a new president through all 13 former colonies, which were now an unsure nation. Travels with George marks a new first-person voice for Philbrick, weaving history and personal reflection into a single narrative.

An interesting trip
Revisado: 03-27-25
My favorite type of history book — where the author shares historical facts mixed with their own reflections and personal experiences. The book had more on slavery than I was expecting, but that is a good thing.

Historia
Drawing on period letters and chronicles, and on the papers of the Virginia Company - which financed the settlement of Jamestown - David Price tells a tale of cowardice and courage, stupidity and brilliance, tragedy and costly triumph. He takes us into the day-to-day existence of the English men and women whose charge was to find gold and a route to the Orient, and who found, instead, hardship and wretched misery. Death, in fact, became the settlers' most faithful companion, and their infighting was ceaseless.

The author gives just the right amount of detail and never lets the story bog down. Very good narration as well.

Historia
What do the Greek myths mean to us today? It's now a golden age for these tales – they crop up in novels, films and popular culture. But what's the modern relevance of Theseus, Hera and Pandora? Were these stories ever meant for children? And what's to be seen now at the places where heroes fought and gods once quarrelled?

I loved the skillful writing and how it made me feel a companionship with the author; loved hearing the ancient stories and how he connected them to the present.

Something special
Revisado: 07-15-24
I was afraid the novel might end up being overly sentimental, but it's life affirming without turning away from the suffering in the world. The characters were so real to me. I'm sure I'll come back to this book again, and send it as a gift to friends.

Historia
Dylan Tomine takes us to the far reaches of the planet in search of fish and adventure, with keen insight, a strong stomach, and plenty of laughs along the way. Closer to home, he wades deeper into his beloved steelhead rivers of the Pacific Northwest and the politics of saving them. Tomine celebrates the joy - and pain - of exploration, fatherhood, and the comforts of home waters from a vantage point well off the beaten path. Headwaters traces the evolution of a lifelong angler’s priorities from fishing to the survival of the fish themselves.

I’m not a fly fisherman nor do I plan to be, but I appreciated the quality writing and well placed humor. The book also educated me on conservation problems of which I was not aware.

Historia
Upon retirement at the age of sixty-two, and grieving his deceased wife, renowned journalist Bernard Ollivier felt a sense of profound emptiness: What do I do now? While some see retirement as a chance to cash in their chips and settle into a comfy armchair, Ollivier still longed for more. Searching for inspiration, he strapped on his gear, donned his hat, and headed out the front door to hike the Way of St. James, a 1400-mile journey from Paris to Compostela, Spain.

This is not a conventional biography — it branches out into the nature of our mind and sense of self, with William Blake as our guide. Not what I was expecting, but I certainly enjoyed the ride.
