Historia
Within These Walls is the powerful memoir of Rev. Carroll Pickett, who spent fifteen years as the death house chaplain at "The Walls," the Huntsville unit of the Texas prison system. In that capacity, Reverend Pickett ministered to ninety-five men before they were put to death by lethal injection. They came with sinister nicknames like "The Candy Man" and "The Good Samaritan Killer," some contrite, some angry -- a few who might even have been innocent.

Incredibly moving
Revisado: 03-29-24
This book is difficult to get through, very emotionally intense at times, but so worth it. The author seems to truly care for the prisoners he worked with, a population that receives very little empathy but who are highly marginalized. Loved it!!

Where lies the strangling fruit
Revisado: 01-21-24
Lovecraft eat your heart out. Oddly Romantic and still quite disturbing. Unknowable forces and weird wildlife biologists converge

Historia
Pyotr Kropotkin (1842-1921), one of the most individual political figures of his time, is best known as an influential anarchist communist. But he was also a scientist, geographer and philosopher, a man who, having grown up on his aristocratic father’s extensive country estate in Russia, had a deep understanding of and love for animals (wild and domesticated), the countryside and wildernesses. And all this was underpinned by a life committed to work for the good of humanity.

Solid science and a call to action
Revisado: 06-13-23
I learned scientific information I didn’t expect to from this old book. The language around Indigenous and non-European peoples did not age well, but the sentiment is good

That which is imagined can never be lost
Revisado: 02-14-23
A beautiful and terrible tale of the power of relationships and the secret strength of storytelling. Barker puts his distinct brands body horror, fleshy folklore, and crass humor into a fantasy world transformed by legend.

Historia
Artist, technologist, and philosopher James Bridle’s Ways of Being is a brilliant, searching exploration of different kinds of intelligence—plant, animal, human, artificial—and how they transform our understanding of humans’ place in the cosmos. What does it mean to be intelligent? Is it something unique to humans, or shared with other beings—beings of flesh, wood, stone, and silicon? The last few years have seen rapid advances in “artificial” intelligence.

A beautiful blend of animist and radical egalitarian thought
Revisado: 12-31-22
Bridle covers so many different areas of thought and current issues of technology and ecological change. He captures well the polyphonies of life and the democracy of species. Now I’m hunting for audiobooks of all the texts he mentioned so that I, too, can trace the paths of our entangled world
